Demi Vollering was handed a huge 1,000 CHF ($1,200 USD) fine by the UCI on Saturday after she blazed to her sensational world championship victory in Montr\u00e9al.<\/p>\n
The Dutchwoman was sanctioned by race officials for \u201cusing a non-compliant position or point of support on the bicycle.\u201d She was also shown a yellow card and docked 25 UCI points.<\/p>\n
Vollering won 900 UCI points when she beat Kasia Niewiadoma-Phinney in the nailbiter final Saturday, by the way.<\/p>\n
Commissaires also hit Austrian rider Katharina Sadnik with the same penalties for the same offense as Vollering.<\/p>\n
Officials did not specify in their post-race communique when Vollering or Sadnik adopted their \u201cillegal\u201d positions, or what exactly they did.<\/p>\n
However, this is nothing new.<\/p>\n
The governing body has been cracking down on non-compliant positions \u2013 typically, riders resting their forearms on the tops of the handlebars or sitting on their top tubes \u2013 for years.<\/p>\n
What does<\/em> stand out, though, is the size of the sanction. 1,000 CHF fines are vary rarely applied to riders or staff by the UCI.<\/p>\n Not that Vollering \u2013 the best-paid, most deeply-sponsored rider in the women\u2019s peloton \u2013 will be too bothered.<\/p>\n The 29-year-old lit up the race in Montr\u00e9al with a for-the-ages performance that capped her already sensational palmar\u00e8s.<\/p>\n Vollering\u2019s first road race rainbow jersey saw her complete a 2026 \u201ctriple crown\u201d of the Giro, Tour, and worlds.<\/p>\n The road world title was the one marquee victory she was missing.
