the number of disease-free years a person has left, and men and women aren&#8217;t affected in the same way.<br \/>\n    <\/h2>\n<div class=\"c-article-content c-article-content--health js-article-content\">\n<p>Social isolation refers to limited contact and participation with others, while loneliness is a subjective experience of feeling disconnected from the world around them. While the two are not the same, a new study published in the journal Nature Communications has found that both are associated with fewer healthy years of life. <\/p>\n<div>\n<div class=\"c-ad u-show-for-mobile-only\">\n<div class=\"c-ad__placeholder\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"c-ad__placeholder__logo\" src=\"https:\/\/static.euronews.com\/website\/images\/logos\/logo-euronews-stacked-outlined-72x72-grey-9.svg\" width=\"72\" height=\"72\" alt loading=\"lazy\"><span>ADVERTISEMENT<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"c-ad u-show-for-desktop\">\n<div class=\"c-ad__placeholder\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"c-ad__placeholder__logo\" src=\"https:\/\/static.euronews.com\/website\/images\/logos\/logo-euronews-stacked-outlined-72x72-grey-9.svg\" width=\"72\" height=\"72\" alt loading=\"lazy\"><span>ADVERTISEMENT<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>On average, loneliness and social isolation cost people around six disease-free years, taking a toll on both physical and mental health, researchers found after analysing data from over 270,000 adults between the ages of 40 and 69.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOverall, the study found that social isolation and loneliness can have a significant impact on disease-free life expectancy,\u201d said lead author Lu Qi, professor at Tulane University. <\/p>\n<p>The study found the associations were stronger for the loss of years free of mental disorders \u2014 depression and anxiety \u2014 than for years free of physical diseases such as type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, chronic respiratory disease, neurodegenerative disease, and cancer. <\/p>\n<p>The good news is that maintaining a healthy lifestyle can mitigate the negative impact of social isolation. The bad news \u2014 it does not appear to compensate for the damage caused by loneliness.<\/p>\n<p>At age 50, individuals experiencing both loneliness and social isolation lived fewer years free of major chronic diseases compared with those experiencing neither. <\/p>\n<div class=\"c-widget-related\" data-stories-id data-event=\"widget_related\">\n<div class=\"c-widget-related__title\"><b class=\"c-widget-related__title__text\" lang=\"en\">Related<\/b><\/div>\n<ul class=\"c-widget-related__list\" id=\"abe-article-related-1\">\n<li class=\"c-widget-related__item\">How lonely you feel may matter more than how alone you actually are, research finds <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<h2>How are men and women impacted differently?<\/h2>\n<p>Men and women do not suffer from loneliness and social isolation in the same way, and that is also reflected in the impact those have on their health. But who gets to take part?<br \/>\n  <\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n<div class=\"articleBody\" data-key=\"articleBody\">Social isolation refers to limited contact and participation with others, while loneliness is a subjective experience of feeling disconnected from the world around them. While the two are not the same, a new study published in the journal Nature Communications has found that both are associated with fewer healthy years of life.\u00a0On average, loneliness and social isolation cost people around six disease-free years, taking a toll on both physical and mental health, researchers found after analysing data from over 270,000 adults between the ages of 40 and 69.\u201cOverall, the study found that social isolation and loneliness can have a significant impact on disease-free life expectancy,\u201d said lead author Lu Qi, professor at Tulane University.\u00a0The study found the associations were stronger for the loss of years free of mental disorders \u2014 depression and anxiety \u2014 than for years free of physical diseases such as type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, chronic respiratory disease, neurodegenerative disease, and cancer.\u00a0The good news is that maintaining a healthy lifestyle can mitigate the negative impact of social isolation.\u00a0 The bad news \u2014 it does not appear to compensate for the damage caused by loneliness.At age 50, individuals experiencing both loneliness and social isolation lived fewer years free of major chronic diseases compared with those experiencing neither.\u00a0How are men and women impacted differently?Men and women do not suffer from loneliness and social isolation in the same way, and that is also reflected in the impact those have on their health.
