\u201cbreakthrough\u201d in Europe\u2019s energy security and competitiveness \u2013 helping sever its reliance on gas.<\/p>\n<div>\n<div class=\"c-ad u-show-for-mobile-only\">\n<div As energy demand continues to increase, this is expected to hit 55 per cent by 2030.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s why experts are now describing waste heat from facilities such as supermarkets, factories, wastewater treatment plants and data centres as the world\u2019s \u201clargest untapped\u201d energy source. However, governments are lagging when it comes to unlocking its potential.<\/p>\n<h2>How much heat does Europe waste and how can it be reused?<\/h2>\n<p>Waste heat is the excess warmth given off by everyday processes, such as a supermarket running its refrigerators. Instead of letting this escape into the air, which risks contributing to the urban heat island effect, it can be captured.<\/p>\n<p>This is usually done using heat pumps that \u201cupgrade\u201d the temperature and then pipe the heat into the same building or a nearby district heating network that provides spaces with heating and hot water.<\/p>\n<p>One aluminium manufacturer in Denmark has stopped using gas on-site through this process, which is projected to save the annual heating and hot water gas use of 132 Danish homes.<\/p>\n<div class=\"c-widget-related\" data-stories-id data-event=\"widget_related\">\n<div class=\"c-widget-related__title\"><b class=\"c-widget-related__title__text\" lang=\"en\">Related<\/b><\/div>\n<ul class=\"c-widget-related__list\" id=\"abe-article-related-1\">\n<li class=\"c-widget-related__item\">\u2018Recovery becomes self-propelling\u2019: Five positive tipping points that can save the world<\/li>\n<li class=\"c-widget-related__item\">Born into a burning Europe: How extreme fire weather will worsen for children and how to stop it<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p>The analysis states that reusing waste heat could save Europe a staggering \u20ac140 billion a year, based on the 3,1000 TWh that was dumped in 2023. It means that Europe\u2019s waste heat alone could power the entire city of Paris for 48 years.<\/p>\n<p>In Germany, existing industrial waste heat emitters could supply more than 30 per cent of the country\u2019s district heating demand. This doesn\u2019t include data centres, which experts say could push the coverage considerably higher \u2013 considering that the country has more than 3,000 servers already.<\/p>\n<h2>Europe \u2018cannot afford\u2019 wasting heat<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re throwing away energy we\u2019ve already paid for,\u201d says Kristian Strand, President of Danfoss Climate Solutions. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWaste heat is one of the world\u2019s biggest untapped energy sources and reusing it is one of the fastest ways to strengthen Europe\u2019s competitiveness, energy security and resilience. We cannot afford to keep letting it go to waste.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Strand argues that to make the most out of waste heat, industry must make heat recovery \u201cstandard practice\u201d. As energy demand continues to increase, this is expected to hit 55 per cent by 2030.It\u2019s why experts are now describing waste heat from facilities such as supermarkets, factories, wastewater treatment plants and data centres as the world\u2019s \u201clargest untapped\u201d energy source. However, governments are lagging when it comes to unlocking its potential.How much heat does Europe waste and how can it be reused?Waste heat is the excess warmth given off by everyday processes, such as a supermarket running its refrigerators. Instead of letting this escape into the air, which risks contributing to the urban heat island effect, it can be captured.This is usually done using heat pumps that \u201cupgrade\u201d the temperature and then pipe the heat into the same building or a nearby district heating network that provides spaces with heating and hot water.One aluminium manufacturer in Denmark has stopped using gas on-site through this process, which is projected to save the annual heating and hot water gas use of 132 Danish homes.The analysis states that reusing waste heat could save Europe a staggering \u20ac140 billion a year, based on the 3,1000 TWh that was dumped in 2023. It means that Europe\u2019s waste heat alone could power the entire city of Paris for 48 years.In Germany, existing industrial waste heat emitters could supply more than 30 per cent of the country\u2019s district heating demand. This doesn\u2019t include data centres, which experts say could push the coverage considerably higher \u2013 considering that the country has more than 3,000 servers already.Europe \u2018cannot afford\u2019 wasting heat\u201cWe\u2019re throwing away energy we\u2019ve already paid for,\u201d says Kristian Strand, President of Danfoss Climate Solutions.\u00a0\u201cWaste heat is one of the world\u2019s biggest untapped energy sources and reusing it is one of the fastest ways to strengthen Europe\u2019s competitiveness, energy security and resilience. We cannot afford to keep letting it go to waste.\u201dStrand argues that to make the most out of waste heat, industry must make heat recovery \u201cstandard practice\u201d.
