gambling during the match live coverage of the World Cup occupied almost a quarter of the tournament\u2019s total live broadcast time, a new study has found.<br \/>\n    <\/h2>\n<div class=\"c-article-content c-article-content--health js-article-content\">\n<p>Did you follow the 2026 World Cup on television? If so, you may have seen an advert for unhealthy food, alcohol or gambling every seven seconds, according to a new study.<\/p>\n<div>\n<div class=\"c-ad u-show-for-mobile-only\">\n<div class=\"c-ad__placeholder\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"c-ad__placeholder__logo\" src=\"https:\/\/static.euronews.com\/website\/images\/logos\/logo-euronews-stacked-outlined-72x72-grey-9.svg\" width=\"72\" height=\"72\" alt loading=\"lazy\"><span>ADVERTISEMENT<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"c-ad u-show-for-desktop\">\n<div class=\"c-ad__placeholder\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"c-ad__placeholder__logo\" src=\"https:\/\/static.euronews.com\/website\/images\/logos\/logo-euronews-stacked-outlined-72x72-grey-9.svg\" width=\"72\" height=\"72\" alt loading=\"lazy\"><span>ADVERTISEMENT<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>More than 93,000 ads for products potentially harmful to human health were broadcast during coverage of the largest FIFA World Cup to date, with approximately six billion people engaging with the 2026 tournament across television, streaming, digital and social media platforms. Such advertising was visible for 39.3 hours of live play \u2014 almost a quarter of the tournament\u2019s total live broadcast time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is particularly concerning given the substantial body of evidence linking marketing for unhealthy products, alcohol and gambling with increased consumption and a range of health, social and financial harms, especially among children and young people,\u201d said Raffaello Rossi, co-author of the study from the University of Bristol. <\/p>\n<p>Researchers at the University of Bristol and the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom analysed all 172.6 hours of live play across the tournament\u2019s 104 matches using the UK\u2019s most powerful supercomputer, Isambard-AI, based at Bristol.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;As one of the world\u2019s most watched sporting events, reaching billions of people, this year\u2019s FIFA World Cup provided an unparalleled platform for advertising,\u201d added Rossi.<\/p>\n<p>The analysis counted only advertising built into the match live coverage, such as those appearing on billboards, meaning viewers could not avoid them while following the game. <\/p>\n<p>On average, viewers saw nine logos for brands associated with health or financial harm per minute of live play.<\/p>\n<div class=\"c-widget-related\" data-stories-id data-event=\"widget_related\">\n<div class=\"c-widget-related__title\"><b class=\"c-widget-related__title__text\" lang=\"en\">Related<\/b><\/div>\n<ul class=\"c-widget-related__list\" id=\"abe-article-related-1\">\n<li class=\"c-widget-related__item\">What decades of tobacco regulation can teach us about ultra-processed food, new study finds<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<h2>What were the main products advertised?<\/h2>\n<p>While all ads identified were associated with products with the potential to harm human health, not all of them occupied the same amount of space during the games. <\/p>\n<p>Unhealthy food and drink brands accounted for more than seven in ten appearances, with 65,722 in total. Their combined visibility was 28.1 hours, equivalent to 16.3% of all live play. If so, you may have seen an advert for unhealthy food, alcohol or gambling every seven seconds, according to a new study.More than 93,000 ads for products potentially harmful to human health were broadcast during coverage of the largest FIFA World Cup to date, with approximately six billion people engaging with the 2026 tournament across television, streaming, digital and social media platforms. Such advertising was visible for 39.3 hours of live play \u2014 almost a quarter of the tournament\u2019s total live broadcast time.\u201cThis is particularly concerning given the substantial body of evidence linking marketing for unhealthy products, alcohol and gambling with increased consumption and a range of health, social and financial harms, especially among children and young people,\u201d said Raffaello Rossi, co-author of the study from the University of Bristol.\u00a0Researchers at the University of Bristol and the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom analysed all 172.6 hours of live play across the tournament\u2019s 104 matches using the UK\u2019s most powerful supercomputer, Isambard-AI, based at Bristol.&#8221;As one of the world\u2019s most watched sporting events, reaching billions of people, this year\u2019s FIFA World Cup provided an unparalleled platform for advertising,\u201d added Rossi.The analysis counted only advertising built into the match live coverage, such as those appearing on billboards, meaning viewers could not avoid them while following the game.\u00a0On average, viewers saw nine logos for brands associated with health or financial harm per minute of live play.What were the main products advertised?While all ads identified were associated with products with the potential to harm human health, not all of them occupied the same amount of space during the games.\u00a0Unhealthy food and drink brands accounted for more than seven in ten appearances, with 65,722 in total. Their combined visibility was 28.1 hours, equivalent to 16.3% of all live play.
