Actually, it’s not even a kids’ bike in the way you might be thinking. It’s a balance bike.

If you don’t have kids, you might not know this, but training wheels have been out for 20 years and balance bikes are in. The idea is that you teach kids to balance first, then they can go right to a pedal bike because pedaling is the easy part. That also means we are talking about a bike for tiny kids. I got my son his first balance bike when he was just old enough to be able to lift it.

(Photo: Litespeed)

What I did not do is buy my two-year-old a hyper-expensive balance bike. Like most people, I bought something in the $50 to $100 range. I could have bought used, as that’s a common route, but I opted for a wooden bike that allowed me to flip the frame upside down for more standover height. If I sound a little obsessive, I am, but I’m sharing to put things in perspective.

There’s a whole world of balance bikes that barely seem real to me. Starting at the low end, we recently covered a Tesla balance bike that was sadly lacking any electronics but did have a Cybertruck aesthetic for $225.

(Photo: Litespeed)

That’s small potatoes, though, considering the Specialized Hotwalk Carbon hit the market in 2022. That one uses Specialized 9R carbon (so not quite as stiff as the S-Works 12R layup), and for the weight weenies out there, it’s a claimed 2.0 kg (4 lb, 6.5 oz).

Some kids, though, aren’t into spandex and watts. Weight isn’t that important compared to the vibe, and for those kids, it’s got to be titanium. Thankfully, Litespeed has an answer. If you care about handmade products, you can’t possibly pass on the Litespeed Rumpus. The Rumpus is built with 3Al/2.5V titanium and features a carbon fork with a bright brushed finish and natural gold anodization. It also comes with a free stand. Not that weight matters here, but this one is 7 lbs (3.1 kg). Priced at a cool $999, you can find more info at the Litespeed website.

(Photo: Strider)

Now, if you happen to find this and are really looking for a nice but reasonable balance bike, Strider is far and away the most popular brand. Strider also launched the first new version of its balance bike in nine years this past April. It’s called the Strider Comp 12, and notably, it’s for 1- to 3-year-olds with a weight of 4.9 lbs. If it had existed when my son was this age, it’s the one I would have purchased, as it has the lower standover height I needed. It’s not the cheapest out there—and used is still a great option—but at $139, it’s a quality choice, and you’ll easily be able to sell it when it’s outgrown. Looks like it’s actually on sale at Amazon.

Published September 17, 2026 04:24PM

[analyse_source url=”https://velo.outsideonline.com/road/road-gear/litespeed-rumpus-titanium-balance-bike/”]

[analyse_image type=”featured” src=”https://velo-cdn.outsideonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/Rumpus-Hero.jpg”] Published September 17, 2026 04:24PM $1,000 for a titanium kids’ bike?
