And not merely because it’s the first rear-drive hot hatch to wear the sacred suffix. We were thoroughly underwhelmed by its former ID.3 GTX guise but a proper, red pinstriped GTI makeover accompanies the promise of a sharper chassis to accompany its newly improved ergonomics inside. Let’s keep our fingers firmly crossed, folks…

Still, you’ll be paying comfortably over £40,000 for one if its Cupra Born VZ cousin is any barometer to go by. So how about something cheaper from the classifieds? A good ‘ol Mk7 Golf GTI – arguably the best of the illustrious, eight-car model line – commands as little as seven grand in the classifieds. This example has covered a mite over 100,000 miles, possesses a full service history and is feels like the Golf GTI jackpot in this iconic white hued, manually shifted, three-door guise.

Your budget must swell if you want to fire up the time machine and sample the Golf GTI in its earliest iteration. Reckon on at least £20k for something that doesn’t need some immediate help if our classified combing is anything to go by. Big money, but you’ll be buying into a bona fide classic and one of the very original interpretations of the hot hatchback formula.

Performance will be modest; its 1.8-litre engine claims about a third of the new ID.3 GTI’s fully electric output, at 110bhp, though this Mk1 Golf is inevitably less than half the weight at 860 kilos. Yours for £19,500.

The diminutive Mk1 Golf GTI was referenced a lot when the diddy Up GTI made it to production. After a paucity of hot city cars, we had high hopes. While the little Up couldn’t get close to the mesmeric highs of an old Citroen Saxo VTS or Peugeot 106 Rallye, there was still plenty of good, honest fun to be had from buzzing its uprated 1.0-litre triple to a very modest redline. And no DSG or wealth of drive modes here…

Its 113bhp wasn’t far ahead of the old Golf and with another 20 per cent of mass to hustle, too, this wasn’t a quick car – but the tuning community has coddled it close and there’s more performance to be uncorked if you so wish. Spending less than £10k on this one might leave a nice wedge of cash for precisely that.

Or you can spend half as much again on a car that’s more of a thriller. The Lupo was a charmer in stock form and an intriguing player of the Volkswagen XL1’s ultra-efficiency project. But it’s the heated-up, 1.6-litre GTI that we crave. Its 123bhp and 112lb ft have the measure of the two cars above it and it could crack 60mph in roughly eight seconds – quick for an early Noughties tin-can.

This example is a mite under £6,000, has the later six-speed manual (which you want) and is a Japanese import, making it free of the rust that may blight an original UK car. Cool things.

Has there ever been a classic Polo GTI? We’d generally answer ‘no’, but there’s a fervent fandom around every flavour of extra strong Polo. Enough to suggest they possess a slower-burn charm than the wilder hot hatch alternatives that generally knocked them into shape in period.

The one you’re looking at here is a potential hidden gem; while the Mk5 Polo GTI launched with a complex, twin-charged 1.4-litre engine and the sole option of a DSG paddleshifter, later, post-facelift cars switched to a tried ‘n’ trusted 1.8-litre turbo with a six-speed manual ‘box. Still no true firecracker – but expect it to be a far more courteous thing to live with than a contemporary Clio RS or Fiesta ST. Yours for £10,995.

The cheapest way into a GTI-badged Volkswagen? Certainly seems that way. Anyone with even a casual interest in hot hatchback history will know the poor fourth-gen Golf GTI is cheap for a reason, its performance and handling both generally too soggy to hit the highs of those early Mk1s and Mk2s.

Yet the Mk4 Golf in general was a handsome slice of design and an example of Volkswagen engineering depth at its greatest; accept it won’t get you places with speed or agility of the GTIs before or after it and this £2,000 example could represent a minor steal.

Fancy the same, quietly potent performance as a classic Mk1 Golf GTI but in a wedgier, wilder bodyshell? That’s where the Scirocco stepped in. The Eighties iteration of Volkswagen’s compact coupe cloaked a Giugiaro-sketched, Karmann-made skin over proven mechanicals to resounding success. Yet you’ll now pay a whole heap less for this smart, 1986 example than you would a contemporary Golf. Seems like a bargain to us…

The Scirocco went on a lengthy hiatus, its role briefly filled by the similarly wedgy Corrado, yet a late Noughties rebirth felt worth the wait. The reborn Beetle is a car enthusiasts love to liberally ladle scorn upon, yet we’d argue it’s guilty of no crimes that a modern Scirocco isn’t. The same 2.0-litre TSI engine dwells ‘neath the curvaceous bonnet of a contemporary Bettle, for similar performance and barely any less handling nous. You’ll just have a harder time explaining the virtues of your latest purchase at your next car meet. A £10,995 price ensures it’s not quite a giveaway, either.

The cheapest route into a truly classic Golf GTI is by cranking open its roof. This is a Mk1 Golf GTI at its core, but with its chassis rigidity (and enthusiast kudos) wound down with the price tag. Its stacked, pram hood and the incongruity of its rollover bar betray a car that won’t be as sharp to drive as its hot hatch donor – though it’s surely no less charming if you’re looking for a bargain classic. Perhaps even more so when the sun’s beaming.

“Increasingly rare to find in original condition and a great base for an enthusiast who values originality or future classic potential,” says the ad. At a third of the price of a decent Golf GTI hard-top, who are we to argue? This one’s just £6,495.

Okay, so a price tag beyond £40,000 lifts the Golf right out of ‘bargain’ territory. But then the Clubsport S lifted the GTI right out of its usual pool of rivals and into a world where it could feasibly take down a Cayman or two. This stripped-out, two-seat special saw Volkswagen briefly claim a Nürburgring lap record while proving that a humble, front-wheel-drive hatch could handle like a sports car.

The best Golf GTI there’s ever been – and for a price tag similar to the one we’re likely to see slapped on the windscreen of a new ID.3 GTI.

The biggest bargain here.
