It\u2019s enough to interfere with the pristine hush of her vocals on \u201cThe Light in the Painting,\u201d and she cannot abide it. Her guitarist and co-producer Mason Stoops steps in to swap out the strap, singing, \u201c<em>You are the squeakiest of leathers<\/em>.\u201d Everyone laughs. They begin again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am never satisfied,\u201d McAlpine, 26, had explained earlier when I arrived to find her curled up in a chair, wearing an oatmeal-colored tee and jeans, and eating a banana. \u201cI hold myself to really high standards.\u201d On this scorching-hot August day, she is sitting in a compound in L.A.\u2019s artsy Frogtown neighborhood to rehearse for the first live shows in support of her fourth album (out Sept. 18). She and her band \u2013\u2013 Stoops, pianist and co-producer Taylor Mackall, and bassist-engineer Omar Akrouche \u2013\u2013 have been here every day this week, along with McAlpine\u2019s boyfriend, Kane Ritchotte, who\u2019s playing drums for the early shows.<\/p>\n<div class=\"sWr iGR CEt\">\n<figure class=\"Qf5 nbP\">\n<div style=\"padding-top:125%\" class=\"vmZ F8Y ap2\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imgix.bustle.com\/uploads\/image\/2026\/9\/11\/7b57746f\/nylon_it-girl_lizzy-mcalpine_credit-nick.jpg?w=268&amp;h=335&amp;fit=crop&amp;crop=faces&amp;dpr=2\" alt class=\"EdX\"><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"Yte pt7 VBN\"><figcaption class=\"rv9 TrI\">Eckhaus Latta top; Araks bra.<\/figcaption><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>In the official music video for \u201cThe Light in the Painting,\u201d Ritchotte is the handsome, Keanu-esque man over whose knee McAlpine folds her arms to sing its lovelorn lyrics. The song is about him, right? McAlpine laughs. \u201cNo, we\u2019ve only been dating for six months,\u201d she says, noting that all 14 tracks on <em>Angel<\/em> were finished before they met. In fact, she and her bandmates just so happened to extend the recording of <em>Angel<\/em> by one extra day, allowing Stoops and Mackall to ask their friend Ritchotte (drummer-producer for the band SRCHR) to join them on percussion because McAlpine thought he was \u201ccute.\u201d \u201cWe found something for him to do,\u201d she says, still smiling. \u201cKane asked me out to dinner that night.\u201d Today, he drums behind a plywood-and-Plexiglas partition decorated with a poster of her looking languorous and a pennant she made for him that reads KANGEL.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"rs0 Dhu\"><p>\u201cHer songs feel so vulnerable and so relatable,\u201d Lola Tung says. \u201cHer music is truly magic.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It\u2019s a small miracle that anybody is here playing these songs at all. After her previous album, 2024\u2019s <em>Older<\/em>, which cemented her brand of unhurried, contemplative folk-pop, McAlpine wasn\u2019t sure she wanted to make music anymore. \u201cI was so burnt-out,\u201d she says. Nonetheless her label, RCA, was expecting another album, and she had a set of songs written largely under the influence of Joni Mitchell, particularly <em>Blue <\/em>and <em>Hejira<\/em>, that couldn\u2019t go to waste. In January 2025, she gathered the band to start recording in Stoops\u2019 recently purchased Altadena studio. As the group began working on the ambient, \u201970s-style \u201cAnybody\u2019s Fool,\u201d heavy winds started picking up and rattling the garage door. \u201cLizzy\u2019s already super sensitive and scared that something\u2019s going to kill her five times a day,\u201d Stoops, 35, says with a wry smile. (She is at this very moment worried that she might be getting sick.) But he tried to coax her into embracing the staticky effect anyway. Their friction erupted into a full-on fight.<\/p>\n<div class=\"sWr iGR CEt\">\n<figure class=\"Qf5 E1M\">\n<div style=\"padding-top:125.006%\" class=\"vmZ F8Y ap2\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imgix.bustle.com\/uploads\/image\/2026\/9\/11\/89346967\/lizzy_mcalpine_02.jpg?w=375&amp;h=469&amp;fit=crop&amp;crop=faces&amp;dpr=2\" alt class=\"EdX\"><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"Yte pt7 okb\"><figcaption class=\"rv9 TrI\">Gucci clothing.<\/figcaption><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cWe were not really listening to each other,\u201d McAlpine says. (Mackall, 30, stayed out of it, invoking advice he learned in private school: \u201cI was in mediation mode. Before you speak, you ask: \u2018Is it kind? Is it true? Is it necessary?\u2019\u201d) Later that day, those winds helped spread the flames of the massively destructive Eaton fire, wrecking the studio. The last thing Stoops was able to rescue before evacuating was the tape of that charged recording.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt took five minutes, which in fire time is too much,\u201d he says, as McAlpine pulls up footage on her phone from the session, which will be used for the song\u2019s lyric video. \u201cAnybody\u2019s Fool\u201d has remained unchanged since, and if you listen closely to the chorus, you can hear the wind. (\u201cWe need to get Kane a mini garage door that he can whack onstage,\u201d Stoops says playfully.)<\/p>\n<div class=\"sWr iGR CEt\">\n<figure class=\"Qf5 E1M\">\n<div style=\"padding-top:139.9906%\" class=\"vmZ F8Y ap2\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imgix.bustle.com\/uploads\/image\/2026\/9\/11\/2a836140\/lizzy_mcalpine_01.jpg?w=375&amp;h=525&amp;fit=crop&amp;crop=faces&amp;dpr=2\" alt class=\"EdX\"><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"Yte pt7 okb\"><figcaption class=\"rv9 TrI\">Universal Studios Costume vintage jacket and belt; PRISCAVera top; Levi\u2019s jeans; Dries Van Noten bracelet.<\/figcaption><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>A few weeks after the fire, McAlpine departed L.A., where she lives, for New York to star in the Broadway musical <em>Floyd Collins<\/em>, playing the sister of the titular cave explorer whose entrapment and eventual death in 1925 created a media frenzy. Stoops assumed both the album and their future as musical partners were in limbo. Then McAlpine started sharing songs with him, one of which she played for him in person, featuring the lyric \u201cI still have things to work on\/That will never end\/But I can\u2019t do it alone.\u201d It was titled \u201cMason\u2019s Song.\u201d They both cried. \u201cMason and I have a brother-sister relationship,\u201d McAlpine says, her eyes again brimming. \u201cI love him so much.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"rs0 Dhu\"><p>\u201cSongs just flow out of me. If it\u2019s an arduous process, that usually means that it\u2019s not good enough.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>McAlpine needed that time on Broadway, she says, to \u201cget my light back.\u201d She grew up in the suburbs of Philadelphia with her parents and younger sibling, Emory, and she credits playing Penny in a high school production of <em>Hairspray <\/em>and Eurydice in Sarah Ruhl\u2019s play of the same name with helping to overcome her shyness. During the Broadway stint, McAlpine lived for four months \u201clike a monk,\u201d she says, leaving her apartment only to walk to and from the theater. But she never stopped writing music, penning \u201cSoldier of the Road,\u201d a gorgeous swirling eddy of a song featuring Robin Pecknold from Fleet Foxes, in her dressing room between rehearsals.<\/p>\n<div class=\"sWr iGR CEt\">\n<figure class=\"Qf5 E1M\">\n<div style=\"padding-top:140.0049%\" class=\"vmZ F8Y ap2\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imgix.bustle.com\/uploads\/image\/2026\/9\/11\/29f8b163\/lizzy_mcalpine_06.jpg?w=375&amp;h=525&amp;fit=crop&amp;crop=faces&amp;dpr=2\" alt class=\"EdX\"><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"Yte pt7 okb\"><figcaption class=\"rv9 TrI\">Chlo\u00e9 dress.<\/figcaption><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>McAlpine is wildly prolific. Stoops jokes that in the time it takes him to eat \u201csome horrible ham and cheese sandwich,\u201d she\u2019ll have written a new song like \u201cOur Strange Ways,\u201d a seven-minute crooner featuring a hidden outro. \u201cThey just flow out of me,\u201d she says, adding that she can only write about her real life. \u201cIf it\u2019s an arduous process, that usually means that it\u2019s not good enough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her fans, who connect deeply with her confessional style, include <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nylon.com\/entertainment\/lola-tung-the-summer-i-turned-pretty-season-3-forbidden-fruits-interview\" class=\"T3D\">Lola Tung<\/a>, actor and star of <em>The Summer I Turned Pretty<\/em>, which itself is coveted for capturing the exquisite pain of young love. \u201cHer songs feel so vulnerable and so relatable,\u201d Tung says via email, adding that she has had McAlpine\u2019s latest single, \u201cUgly Things,\u201d on repeat since its release a few weeks ago. \u201cI love her [2021] EP <em>When the World Stopped Moving<\/em>. \u2018Angelina\u2019 is one of my favorite songs ever. It came out in my second semester of college, and I remember listening to it and sobbing in my apartment. Even before the release of her debut album, <em>Give Me a Minute,<\/em> in 2020, McAlpine earned a TikTok following when she shared her clever half-finished song \u201cYou Ruined the 1975,\u201d which, much to some fans\u2019 chagrin, would never appear on an album. \u201cI wish I had never posted it,\u201d she says, shaking her head. \u201cIt\u2019s not a good song.\u201d In 2023, \u201cCeilings,\u201d from her sophomore album, <em>Five Seconds Flat<\/em>, launched a TikTok trend of women in flowy dresses running across woodlands, snow, and beaches to sped-up versions of the song. More recently, \u201cSpring Into Summer,\u201d from the deluxe edition of her third album, <em>Older (and Wiser)<\/em>, prompted wistful social media montages and clips of friends jumping into water.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf I\u2019m jealous of anything, it\u2019s how certain she is, how uninhibited she is, as a writer,\u201d says Ritchotte, 34. When the band breaks for lunch, McAlpine throws her arms around him for a kiss, but she is out of earshot as he continues: \u201cShe can sit down with an instrument and just write and write. She doesn\u2019t fall into common traps like overthinking or feeling insecure, wondering if the last song she wrote was the last time she\u2019ll write a good song.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"rs0 Dhu\"><p>\u201cI still see people being like, \u2018This song is disgusting.\u2019 Y\u2019all are telling me that you\u2019ve never had these thoughts. Seriously? Are you kidding me?\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div class=\"sWr iGR CEt\">\n<figure class=\"Qf5 E1M\">\n<div style=\"padding-top:140%\" class=\"vmZ F8Y ap2\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imgix.bustle.com\/uploads\/image\/2026\/9\/11\/a9c1c0f4\/lizzy_mcalpine_04b.jpg?w=375&amp;h=525&amp;fit=crop&amp;crop=faces&amp;dpr=2\" alt class=\"EdX\"><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"Yte pt7 okb\"><figcaption class=\"rv9 TrI\">Eckhaus Latta clothing; Araks bra; Moschino shoes.<\/figcaption><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>It follows that, more than anything, McAlpine hates feeling boxed in. So when it came time to record <em>Older<\/em>, she felt the initial sessions were trying too hard to recapture the bigger pop sound of <em>Five Seconds Flat<\/em>. \u201cWhen I was touring with <em>Five Seconds Flat<\/em>, I was walking around the stage and going \u2018woooo!\u2019\u201d she says, and mimes pumping her arm in the air. \u201cIt didn\u2019t feel correct. Those songs are great, but that\u2019s not really who I am anymore.\u201d With a tour for <em>Older<\/em> already booked, she scrapped the recordings, hired her current band, and rerecorded the entire album in two weeks, which she admits was an \u201cinsane\u201d thing to do. \u201cI wouldn\u2019t say making those decisions is hard. It\u2019s just not fun,\u201d she says, pulling her long brown hair back and holding it in a ponytail. \u201cThat\u2019s kind of how I live my life. If I need to make a hard decision to pivot, then I will, because it needs to happen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Many of McAlpine\u2019s songs are about messy relationships befitting someone her age. <em>Older<\/em> was a crucible of an album devoted entirely to an ex with a drinking problem. \u201cIt was sad,\u201d says McAlpine, who doesn\u2019t drink. Also, she\u2019s done writing songs about that guy: \u201cI left that one in the past. It\u2019s not like bad blood or anything. He texts me sometimes about music because he\u2019s also a musician. I don\u2019t really respond.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"sWr iGR CEt\">\n<figure class=\"Qf5 E1M\">\n<div style=\"padding-top:133.3413%\" class=\"vmZ F8Y ap2\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imgix.bustle.com\/uploads\/image\/2026\/9\/11\/e739b94f\/lizzy_mcalpine_10.jpg?w=375&amp;h=500&amp;fit=crop&amp;crop=faces&amp;dpr=2\" alt class=\"EdX\"><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"Yte pt7 okb\"><figcaption class=\"rv9 TrI\">Universal Studios Costume vintage jacket and belt; PRISCAVera top; Levi\u2019s jeans; Dries Van Noten bracelet; Christian Louboutin shoes.<\/figcaption><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>Another song from <em>Older (and Wiser)<\/em>, the erotic \u201cPushing It Down and Praying,\u201d scandalized some listeners with the line \u201cI\u2019m in bed, layin\u2019 down, naked\/You\u2019re inside of me.\u201d \u201cI still see people being like, \u2018This song is disgusting,\u2019\u201d she says, and shrugs. \u201cY\u2019all are telling me that you\u2019ve never had these thoughts. Seriously? Are you kidding me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On <em>Angel<\/em>, several tracks focus on dissolving a relationship and the ensuing freedom, including the soaring \u201cPeach,\u201d which McAlpine wrote two weeks fresh from a breakup when she realized she could simply eat the fruit before dinner. The problem, she says, is that she craves routine so deeply that she sometimes forgets that \u201cI can literally do whatever I want, whenever I want.\u201d An ideal day for her? Staying at home, reading horror novels (currently: C.J. Leede\u2019s <em>Headlights<\/em>), playing mystery video games (like <em>Return of the Obra Dinn<\/em>), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nylon.com\/entertainment\/olivia-rodrigo-lego-collection\" class=\"T3D\">assembling Legos<\/a> (which are threatening to overtake an entire room in her house), and, hopefully sooner than later, cuddling a cat. \u201cI have free will,\u201d she says, with a trace of awe.<\/p>\n<div class=\"sWr iGR CEt\">\n<figure class=\"Qf5 E1M\">\n<div style=\"padding-top:140.0057%\" class=\"vmZ F8Y ap2\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imgix.bustle.com\/uploads\/image\/2026\/9\/11\/d582f7b0\/lizzy_mcalpine_07.jpg?w=375&amp;h=525&amp;fit=crop&amp;crop=faces&amp;dpr=2\" alt class=\"EdX\"><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"Yte pt7 okb\"><figcaption class=\"rv9 TrI\">Eckhaus Latta clothing; Araks bra; Universal Studios Costume vintage belt.<\/figcaption><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>As on her previous albums, Alpine reserved the 13th track on <em>Angel <\/em>for her late father, who died unexpectedly on March 13 of 2020, just as the world shut down for COVID. At the time McAlpine was a junior at the Berklee College of Music (she\u2019d soon drop out). \u201cThe Crowd\u201d is about regretting all the things she never got to know about her dad. When she sits down to play it at the piano, one of her touring musicians, Vanessa Wheeler, slips me a note that reads, <em>This makes me cry every time<\/em>. \u201cI was 20, so I was still very like, \u2018It\u2019s all about me, me, me,\u2019\u201d McAlpine tells me of her father\u2019s passing. \u201cI\u2019m in this phase of my life where I\u2019m seeing my parents as actual people, but I can\u2019t talk to my dad about anything now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The rehearsal is winding down. The band departs for a London show in a few days, and from there to New York and back to Los Angeles. McAlpine is still figuring out her relationship with performing live. Will she sit, or will she stand? \u201cI don\u2019t really know how I exist onstage yet,\u201d she admits. For now, she\u2019s going to go home and do nothing.
