js-article-content\">\n<p>Germany&#8217;s finance minister on Monday met the UniCredit CEO to seek guarantees over the future of Commerzbank, as the Italian lender gears up to complete a takeover of its German rival.<\/p>\n<div>\n<div class=\"c-ad u-show-for-mobile-only\">\n<div class=\"c-ad__placeholder\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"c-ad__placeholder__logo\" src=\"https:\/\/static.euronews.com\/website\/images\/logos\/logo-euronews-stacked-outlined-72x72-grey-9.svg\" width=\"72\" height=\"72\" alt financing the German economy,&#8221; German Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil said in a statement issued after the meeting.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We expect Commerzbank to remain a listed company headquartered in Frankfurt and to continue its strong focus on financing small- and medium-sized businesses.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class=\"c-widget-related\" data-stories-id data-event=\"widget_related\">\n<div has built up a stake of nearly 50% in Commerzbank and is close to sealing one of Europe&#8217;s biggest banking mergers in recent years.<\/p>\n<p>A German finance ministry spokesman had earlier conceded that the banks had moved into &#8220;a different phase now&#8221; and were negotiating a transaction.<\/p>\n<p>But he stressed Klingbeil wanted to ensure Commerzbank&#8217;s interests and the country&#8217;s were protected during the talks in Berlin.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Commerzbank has over 40,000 employees and we naturally want to safeguard their interests,&#8221; he told a press board and its roughly 12-percent stake in the bank, both legacies of a state bailout during the financial crisis.<\/p>\n<p>But its leverage is now likely to be diminished given the size of UniCredit&#8217;s stake.<\/p>\n<p>UniCredit started building up its holding in Commerzbank in 2024 in a bid to launch a takeover.<\/p>\n<p>Commerzbank slashed thousands of jobs and hiked its financial
