Acclaimed filmmaker Guillermo Del Toro spoke out about his thoughts on artificial intelligence and what he feels gets lost in the creative process when AI is used in art.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

Del Toro popped into the r\/movies subreddit for an AMA session<\/u><\/a> with fans on September 9. One of these fans, going by the username ihs25ysf, asked him about some comments he\u2019d made<\/u><\/a> during a 2024 talk at the British Film Institute, where he said that AI can create \u201csemi-compelling screensavers\u201d and \u201cthat\u2019s essentially that.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe value of art is not in how much it costs and how little effort it requires,” he said at the time. “It’s how much would you risk to be in its presence.”<\/p>\n

The Pan\u2019s Labyrinth creator has been adamant that the human element of art be preserved \u2014 something for which he continued to advocate in his response to the fan, who asked him for his opinion on the \u201cbiggest thing lost\u201d when a \u201ccomputer generates an image instead of a human hand.\u201d<\/p>\n

To Del Toro, the \u201calchemy\u201d of creativity and discovery humans experience when crafting a story or artwork is unachievable by a machine, and many of the best works are often elevated by “accidents” that happen during the creative process.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe three quarters of the process that gave you the chance to think of the idea that people don’t think about without that process,\u201d he answered. \u201cMeaning, AI can get you to the middle really fast, but there’s a dialectic with the process that gets you to that top 10%.\u201d<\/p>\n
