Writer-director Michael Mann is taking another crack at his 2006 film, Miami Vice<\/u><\/a>. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n

It was announced today that Miami Vice: Director\u2019s Final Cut will make its world premiere at Beyond Fest<\/u><\/a> in Los Angeles on October 3, 2026, followed by a Q&A with Mann. <\/p>\n

It is described as \u201cMichael Mann\u2019s new cut\u201d and that it will be shown in 4K. The Beyond Fest site doesn\u2019t list the running time of this new cut.<\/p>\n

If this version is truly a \u201cnew cut” then it will be an even different version of the film than the Miami Vice: Unrated Director\u2019s Edition that was released on Blu-ray in 2008. The Unrated Director\u2019s Edition is a re-edited film featuring scenes that were cut from the theatrical release as well as new music cues. <\/p>\n

\u201cThese changes are enough to make this Miami Vice a slightly different and in some ways better experience than the theatrical cut, although the film’s same fundamental flaws remain,\u201d as I wrote in my review of the Unrated Director\u2019s Edition<\/u><\/a> at the time. <\/p>\n

\u201cThis edition, however, is closer in tone to the TV series<\/u><\/a> [which Mann exec produced but did not create], enough to have muted some of that criticism. For example, it opens with an offshore speedboat race set against the sunny Miami skyline and scored with electronic music, which conjures memories of the series’ opening credits.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mann\u2019s Miami Vice was a legendarily difficult production, culminating in the abrupt departure of lead actor Jamie Foxx, who played Detective Ricardo Tubbs opposite Colin Farrell as his partner, Sonny Crockett. Foxx abandoned the film during shooting in the Dominican Republic, a move that forced Mann to change the movie\u2019s ending<\/u><\/a>.<\/p>\n
