and oesophageal cancer has been established by the world\u2019s largest study into the subject yet.<br \/>\n    <\/h2>\n<div class=\"c-article-content c-article-content--health js-article-content\">\n<p>Regularly drinking piping hot tea and coffee could triple the risk of developing oesophageal cancer \u2014 a cancer that&#8217;s found in the gullet or food pipe, according to the world\u2019s largest study to date that establishes a link between the two. <\/p>\n<div>\n<div class=\"c-ad u-show-for-mobile-only\">\n<div class=\"c-ad__placeholder\"><img decoding=\"async\" of coffee per person each year in 2023. <\/p>\n<p>While the health benefits of hot drinks have been widely studied, their potential cancer risks have remained unclear within Western populations, according to Oxford University researchers, who published their findings in the International Journal of Cancer. <\/p>\n<div class=\"c-widget-related\" data-stories-id data-event=\"widget_related\">\n<div class=\"c-widget-related__title\"><b class=\"c-widget-related__title__text\" lang=\"en\">Related<\/b><\/div>\n<ul class=\"c-widget-related__list\" Indian start-up turns their noses to AI<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p>Through a 14-year analysis of nearly a million middle-aged men and women based in the United Kingdom, those who have their drinks &#8220;very hot&#8221; \u2014 classified as 65 degrees Celsius or above by the International Agency for Research on Cancer \u2014 were found to face an almost three times higher risk of developing cancer of the food pipe or gullet than those who drink them \u201cwarm\u201d. <\/p>\n<p>The amount consumed also mattered, with six or more hot drinks per day increasing the risk. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe study being so large definitely adds to the evidence that having hot and very hot drinks increases your risk of developing squamous cell carcinoma [a type of cancer that starts as a growth of cells on the skin],\u201d Keren Papier, a nutritional epidemiologist at the University of Oxford&#8217;s population health department and co-author of the study, told Euronews Health.<\/p>\n<p>Most people drink coffee and tea at temperatures of between 50 and 60 degrees Celsius, although this can vary depending on region and preparation methods.<\/p>\n<p>Even with the addition of milk, it\u2019s advised to wait at least a few minutes before drinking.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf a drink is uncomfortable to drink, letting it sit to cool down a bit to what you might expect to be warm or hot as opposed to very hot would be a good idea,\u201d Papier said.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>A rare cancer<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Oesophageal cancer has two primary subtypes that describe where the cancer originates: squamous cell oesophageal cancer and adenocarcinoma. <\/p>\n<p>It has a disproportionately higher incidence rate in the UK, listed as the 14th most common cancer in the country, according to Cancer Research UK.
