She resumes swiping intently. We\u2019ve been talking motherhood in the public eye, and I mention I\u2019m not sure I want to have children \u2014 but Waterhouse wants me to know what might be in store anyway. \u201cAnyone that\u2019s thinking of having a child, I show them [this photo]. I had something called \u2018pregnancy nose,\u2019\u201d the 34-year-old divulges. \u201cIt\u2019s actually so funny. The selfie is not dissimilar to many we\u2019ve all seen of her over the nearly two decades Waterhouse has been in the public eye \u2014 she\u2019s makeup-free, her hair a signature mussed lob. The singer instructs me to inspect her swollen \u201cunrecognizable\u201d nose \u2014 a perinatal symptom of increased blood flow \u2014 but I\u2019m struck by how vulnerable she looks in her hospital gown in the hours before motherhood. Today, she\u2019s back in full Waterhouse regalia (a champagne silk dress with sequins cascading over her chest) in another unexpected context: a casual rotisserie chicken restaurant on the edge of Hollywood.<\/p>\n<p>Waterhouse used to live not far from here with her partner, Robert Pattinson, and their 2-year-old daughter, whose name the pair have yet to share publicly. \u201cI think if I spend too long here, I get quite down,\u201d Waterhouse says of LA. \u201cI feel like I almost left this area because the pap thing was really bad.\u201d Still, she liked the spot\u2019s walkability and sense of community. Around these parts, Jennifer Coolidge is rumored to wander barefoot to the local magazine stand. Waterhouse enthusiastically says she\u2019ll consider a short-term lease, even though Pattinson <a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/robert-pattinson-jokes-he-is-bougie-after-moving-to-beverly-hills-11989221\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"T3D\">recently told the press<\/a> that he and Waterhouse are renting in Beverly Hills. As they leave, the singer leans in close. \u201cI have no idea [who they were],\u201d Waterhouse says. \u201cBut I\u2019m quite good at pretending.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her life has been a whirlwind of late: In 2023, she concluded her<em> <\/em>Coolest Place in the World<em> <\/em>tour, starred in the acclaimed limited series <em>Daisy Jones &amp; the Six<\/em>,<em> <\/em>and made her Lollapalooza debut. In 2024, she gave birth to her daughter two days after completing her sophomore album, <em>Memoir of a Sparklemuffin<\/em>.<em> <\/em>By 10 weeks postpartum, she had shot a <em>British Vogue <\/em>cover and headlined the Gobi stage at Coachella (\u201cQuite intense,\u201d she says of the pace). Then she <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nylon.com\/entertainment\/taylor-swift-eras-tour-openers-artists\" class=\"T3D\">opened Taylor Swift\u2019s Eras Tour<\/a> at Wembley Stadium. \u201cWhat an unbelievable thing to get asked to,\u201d she reflects, twirling her straw. \u201cI couldn\u2019t actually believe it. Seeing 90,000 red seats all empty right during soundcheck, that was scarier than actually doing the show. I just can\u2019t believe that this is what [she does] every night for a year. Thankfully, she was raised by a mother who opposed idleness.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy mum is from the countryside, and she was like, \u2018I\u2019m not going to have these London spoiled kids that don\u2019t do anything,\u2019\u201d she says. \u201cAnd I was like, \u2018Well, that\u2019s actually quite smart.\u2019 Because it wasn\u2019t enjoyable \u2014 I couldn\u2019t rest there. She said to me years later, \u2018That was my way of making sure that all of you got up and got jobs and did something, because I basically made your life a nightmare to be at home.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"sWr iGR CEt\">\n<figure class=\"Qf5 E1M\">\n<div style=\"padding-top:149.9839%\" class=\"vmZ F8Y ap2\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imgix.bustle.com\/uploads\/image\/2026\/9\/3\/d2aeedce\/492400080011.jpg?w=375&amp;h=562&amp;fit=crop&amp;crop=faces&amp;dpr=2\" alt class=\"EdX\"><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"Yte pt7 okb\"><figcaption class=\"rv9 TrI\">Saint Laurent by Anthony Vaccarello bodysuit.<\/figcaption><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>Born Alice Waterhouse, Suki chose to go by her middle name, which loosely translates to \u201cbeloved\u201d in Japanese and won out over her parents\u2019 other option, Kooky. (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vanityfair.com\/hollywood\/2014\/04\/suki-waterhouse-bradley-cooper\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"T3D\">Yes, really<\/a>.)<em> <\/em>Raised just outside of London proper in Chiswick by medical professionals \u2014 her father a prominent plastic surgeon, her mother a cancer nurse \u2014 Waterhouse acknowledges her upbringing was \u201cprivileged.\u201d But while she counted a Jagger among her private-school classmates, the keys to the city were hardly guaranteed by aristocratic proximity alone. And so at 16, Waterhouse, after being scouted by a modeling agent, left school to work in the heart of London \u2014 armed with her portfolio, high heels, and an A-Z map of the city. (\u201cBefore Google Maps,\u201d she quips.) In a good month she\u2019d make \u00a3400.<\/p>\n<p>In those early days, Waterhouse\u2019s modeling career caused some tension on the home front, and understandably so: What parents wouldn\u2019t blanch at the thought of their teenage daughter wandering London on her own, turning up at the doors of middle-aged male photographers for test shoots? And their concerns were perfectly justified, Waterhouse says, since \u201cthere was loads of bullsh*t going on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI knew of a lot of bad things happening to girls that I was around at the time and friends of mine,\u201d she says. \u201cIt\u2019s really scary. I\u2019ve done shoots with people that have later been convicted.\u201d She remembers meeting up with one particular photographer who told her he didn\u2019t have any clothes to put her in \u2014 and suggested she do the shoot nude. \u201cYou wouldn\u2019t ever even complain to your agency,\u201d she says. \u201cNo one gave a f*ck if you had something to say.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"sWr iGR m4B CEt\">\n<figure class=\"Qf5 E1M FnM\">\n<div style=\"padding-top:71.4242%\" class=\"vmZ F8Y ap2\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imgix.bustle.com\/uploads\/image\/2026\/8\/21\/a7166a38\/492400070004.jpg?w=375&amp;h=268&amp;fit=crop&amp;crop=faces&amp;dpr=2\" alt class=\"EdX\"><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"Yte pt7 okb\"><figcaption class=\"rv9 TrI\">New York Vintage wings.<\/figcaption><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>Even as she checked off the markers of success on many models\u2019 vision boards \u2014 like <a href=\"https:\/\/sukialicewaterhouse.weebly.com\/campaigns--collections.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"T3D\">booking campaigns<\/a> for Adidas and Burberry \u2014 the industry could still be brutal. Waterhouse recently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/reel\/Da2fhIvIAtr\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"T3D\">revealed<\/a> that her then agent didn\u2019t think she was built for modeling and routinely redirected her toward other lines of work.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat are you going to say back to them if they all sit you down and say, \u2018Your measurements aren\u2019t good,\u2019 or, \u2018You need to lose weight\u2019?\u201d Waterhouse tells me. \u201cIf you seem to be difficult in any way, they really do not care to keep you around.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Still, fashion gets the credit for bolstering her against critics and, ultimately, launching her acting career. It turns out that the same dubious modeling agent had an eye for film casting, and Waterhouse landed the role of the foil blocking the path to true love for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nylon.com\/entertainment\/lily-collins-emily-in-paris-season-2-married-wedding-planning\" class=\"T3D\">Lily Collins<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bustle.com\/entertainment\/sam-claflin-vanished-burnout-reset-interview\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"T3D\">Sam Claflin<\/a> in the rom-dram<em> Love, Rosie<\/em>. During filming, a 20-year-old Waterhouse found her first on-set experience empowering. \u201cI felt really free,\u201d she says with a smile. \u201cI don\u2019t really remember being nervous. [I was] not that fazed, in a weird way.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"sWr iGR CEt\">\n<figure class=\"Qf5 E1M\">\n<div style=\"padding-top:201.2333%\" class=\"vmZ F8Y ap2\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imgix.bustle.com\/uploads\/image\/2026\/8\/21\/b5d381ce\/triptych.jpg?w=375&amp;h=755&amp;fit=crop&amp;crop=faces&amp;dpr=2\" alt class=\"EdX\"><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"Yte pt7 okb\"><figcaption class=\"rv9 TrI\">Gucci dress.<\/figcaption><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>That born-to-do-this charisma is palpable to her collaborators, too. \u201cSuki is impossible to take your eyes off of,\u201d says Nzingha Stewart, who directed her in <em>Daisy Jones &amp; the Six<\/em>. \u201cAnd it\u2019s more than how gorgeous she is \u2014 it\u2019s an effortless sense of cool<em>.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Inspired by the messy internal politics of Fleetwood Mac, <em>Daisy Jones &amp; the Six<\/em> follows a fictional 1970s band riding the highs and lows of the era\u2019s rock scene. \u201cAll of the actors felt lived-in in their roles as musicians,\u201d Stewart adds, \u201cbut there was one moment watching Suki on the monitor where I thought, \u2018That girl is a rock star.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"rs0 Dhu\"><p>\u201cI knew that I was not going to be a happy person for the rest of my life if I didn\u2019t fall on my arse and just at least <i>try<\/i>.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Any girl can capitalize on ephemeral <em>cool<\/em>, but it takes a special kind of entrepreneurial spirit to make it last. There was her accessories brand, Pop &amp; Suki, which she cofounded with her friend Poppy Jamie and whose customizable bags \u2014 think monogramming, personalized straps, playful proto-Labubu charms \u2014 were worn by the likes of <a href=\"https:\/\/ladygaga.fandom.com\/wiki\/Pop_and_Suki?file=10-24-17_Arriving_at_Dodger_Stadium_in_LA_001.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"T3D\">Lady Gaga<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/Bt024EXjo1y\/?utm_source=ig_embed&amp;ig_rid=AVxKROUvSJSvL4CmzXS0641\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"T3D\">Beyonc\u00e9<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But for Waterhouse, dressing musical icons was never going to beat becoming one. At 24, she released her debut single, \u201cBrutally,\u201d an acoustic breakup ballad on which her rich yet unrefined voice settles somewhere between Lesley Gore and Hope Sandoval. It was a decidedly indie operation \u2014 \u201cI learned how to do DistroKid and upload it, and it was all very just by myself,\u201d she says of her early releases \u2014 but industry acclaim was elusive. \u201cI remember putting out \u2018Brutally\u2019 for the first time, and there was a <em>Daily Mail<\/em> article saying that it failed to chart in the top 200,\u201d she recalls. Another slight that springs to mind: \u201c[I did] a little acoustic show in London with a friend \u2014 it was a tiny little show \u2014 and there was an article about it being a disaster.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The disconnect between her vision and the press\u2019 preconceived notions \u201cshut me down for a long time. And in a way, she got the last laugh: Her anthemic 2017 song \u201cGood Looking,\u201d which her team once advised her to scrub from the internet for a clean slate, ended up finding a viral new life on TikTok in 2022.<\/p>\n<p>Three albums later, Waterhouse\u2019s work speaks for itself. For <em>Loveland<\/em>, the singer assembled an indie-pop Avengers of producers and cowriters, among them Aaron Dessner (a founding member of The National, better known to Gen Z for his collaborations with Taylor Swift and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nylon.com\/entertainment\/gracie-abrams-thats-so-true-interview-tour-new-album\" class=\"T3D\">Gracie Abrams<\/a>), Joel Little (who\u2019s worked with Lorde, Noah Kahan, and Niall Horan), and Natalie Findlay and Jules Apollinaire (of U.K. psych-rock band Ttrruuces). \u201cI just felt like she\u2019s so open to ideas,\u201d Little tells me. \u201cThere was no banging our heads against the wall, really. [She\u2019s] trying to be herself and pull from influence rather than chasing some kind of trend.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Meticulously imperfect and rooted in Woodstock-era nostalgia, <em>Loveland<\/em> feels like epic folk-pop for purists, a put-your-phone-down guide to navigating the blues (\u201cSeasons\u201d), rediscovering your spark (\u201cBack in Love\u201d), and occasionally owning your crazy (\u201cTiny Raisin\u201d). It\u2019s her finest offering to date \u2014 and it made new friends out of collaborators like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nylon.com\/entertainment\/king-princess-hold-on-baby-album-girlfriend-new-york-city\" class=\"T3D\">King Princess<\/a>, aka Mikaela Straus, who worked on the bonus track \u201c18\u201d and met Waterhouse through Pattinson. \u201cWe hit it off at a dinner, she mentioned she had an album written, and she sent it to me. I fell in love with it,\u201d Straus recalls. \u201cThrough working together we became buds. Remarkably, the singer seems unperturbed, ignoring even her lemonade (which is now sweating as much as I am). In person, Waterhouse is both exceedingly affable and a little frenetic.
