The New Orleans Pelicans agreed to trade Jordan Hawkins, Micah Peavy, a future second-round pick and a future second-round pick swap to the Memphis Grizzlies in exchange for AJ Johnson and Taj Gibson on Tuesday, league sources confirmed to The Athletic.<\/em><\/p>\n

The Pelicans move on from two of their former draft picks and future draft capital to free up $5.7 million in wiggle room below the first apron and complete their anticipated signing of former Clippers guard Bennedict Mathurin<\/a> to a two-year, $16 million deal that the two sides agreed upon a few weeks ago. New Orleans will also generate a $7 million trade exception by moving Hawkins.<\/p>\n

New Orleans will likely waive Gibson and his non-guaranteed $3.8 million salary as part of the process, per a team source who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the deal was not complete. Johnson will remain with the Pels and get a chance to show what he can do in training camp, per a team source.<\/p>\n

Memphis continues its rebuild by adding two more young prospects on the perimeter and draft compensation.<\/p>\n

Hawkins, 24, was selected No. 14 overall by New Orleans in the 2023 NBA Draft and showed some potential early in his career as a sharpshooter before mostly falling out of the rotation last season. In three seasons with the Pels, he averaged 8 points and 2.3 rebounds while shooting 37.4 percent from the field and 34.8 percent from 3-point distance.<\/p>\n

Peavy, 25, was taken with the No. 40 pick in the 2025 NBA Draft by New Orleans and quickly became a fan favorite because of his defensive tenacity as an on-ball stopper. During his rookie season, he averaged 4.3 points and 1.9 rebounds.<\/p>\n
