Today Factor is revealing the complete plan for the brand\u2019s gravel ambitions with the announcement of the Factor Elara. This is a bike that we saw at The Traka and again at Unbound 2026, where Logan Jones-Wilkins was able to touch it and spend a little time taking pictures of the Factor Elara. Today, we are getting all the final details.<\/p>\n
The Factor Elara is the end of the funnel<\/h2>\n
Factor currently has three gravel bikes in its lineup, and it starts at the most general bike, the Aluto. The Aluto is the most general-use gravel bike that Factor is currently offering. If you want to ride your bike off-road, or in a mixed-use scenario, the Aluto will handle that. With room for only 47mm tires (up to 52mm in the front) it may not be the absolute perfect choice, especially for modern gravel racing, but it can handle whatever your need might be. The Aluto is also the most affordable of the current gravel offerings.<\/p>\n
From there, you can get a little more specific with the Factor Sarana. The Sarana introduces some specialization and additional capability, with Factor stating it\u2019s designed for race endurance.<\/p>\n
To make the Sarana perfect for race endurance means it fits up to a 2.2-inch (57mm) tire and there\u2019s significant flexibility built into the rear triangle. The bike is also suspension-corrected, and there are suspension fork builds available. These changes mean the bike is less capable on the road; however, in discussions with Factor, I was told that this bike is the one that is likely right for most people who are riding primarily off-road. Particularly if you are racing, the bike is actually quite aerodynamic, and the added traction of both big tires and compliance will be a benefit to most people. It happens to focus on ultra-endurance in the marketing, but for a lot of people, those features will be perfect for modern gravel racing.<\/p>\n
Factor also explained that the Sarana allows the Elara to answer a question. What if we went farther? What if we created a bike that was not actually ideal for as many people but left nothing on the table? By having the Sarana available, the Factor Elara can become the most focused of the three bikes. It may not be right for everyone, but if you can take advantage of it, this bike is designed as the fastest of the gravel lineup.<\/p>\n When it comes to fast, Factor is a company that focuses on geometry first and foremost. Not everyone will agree with the direction that Factor has decided to go with the Elara, but what the brand has done is mimic the aerodynamic posture and handling of a road race bike. This is a big pivot from the relaxed endurance focus of the Sarana and even from the moderate stance of the Aluto, but that is obviously not an accident.<\/p>\n According to Factor, a fast gravel bike starts by forcing the rider into a low, aggressive tuck. Looking at a size 54 frame, the Elara\u2019s stack sits at 555mm. Compare that to the Sarana at 573mm, or the Aluto at 565mm, and the intent is clear. For context, Factor\u2019s aero road bike, the Monza, has a stack of 552mm. The Elara is nearly identical in height to the Monza, but Factor stretches the rider out even further with a 399mm reach compared to the Monza\u2019s 381mm and the Aluto\u2019s 393mm.<\/p>\n It\u2019s not just the posture either. Factor believes that road bike handling is also fast off-road, and the Elara runs with that concept. You\u2019ll find a steep 72.2-degree head tube angle and a tight 60.41mm trail on a size 54. The endurance-focused Sarana, by comparison, uses a slacker 71.5-degree angle with a longer 65mm trail, and the Aluto offers a 72-degree head angle with a 61.2mm trail.<\/p>\n The front end is not what Factor talked about most, though. Instead, Factor pointed to the Elara\u2019s rear end, with its ultra-short 420mm chainstay, as the source of the bike\u2019s personality. For Factor, this design choice was central to the whole bike, and a big part of that was the engineering challenges it introduced.<\/p>\n The first of those challenges is that a bike with a tight head tube angle and short chainstay is not a stable bike. To combat that road-like steering and keep the bike stable off-road, Factor dropped the bottom bracket down to a deep 80mm. This lowers the center of gravity significantly more than the Monza\u2019s 70mm drop and slightly more than the Aluto\u2019s 78mm drop, which Factor claims plants the bike for better traction and composure on rough terrain at race speeds.<\/p>\n Whether or not Factor was able to succeed at keeping the bike stable is something that I\u2019ll have to test myself, but that goal wasn\u2019t the only challenge.<\/p>\n This is the same challenge every new gravel bike coming to market wrestles with, and it has really always been the fundamental problem for gravel frame design. When you use a short chainstay with big tires, you run out of room. Early gravel bikes solved this by going to a 650b wheel and later with a dropped driveside chainstay. As we push tires even bigger, the spatial challenge only continues to grow.<\/p>\n Factor had a nearly completed bike with room for a 50mm tire and decided that wasn\u2019t good enough. The production-spec Factor Elara fits a 57mm tire in 1x guise or a 47mm with a front derailleur. Because tires, bottom bracket, chain, chainstays, and front chainrings all fight for space, you usually have to make choices. The brand wanted to keep 2x compatibility because the team understood that a fast gravel bike also works pretty well as an aero road bike with 40mm slicks. But even going to a 1x setup doesn\u2019t fully solve the clearance problem.<\/p>\n To make it all work, Factor told me the Elara had to flex the brand\u2019s carbon manufacturing expertise. Instead of a frame built in pieces, the Elara\u2019s rear end is a true monocoque. That matters because the joint for a bike frame typically happens in the chainstay near the bottom bracket\u2014right where you need as much space as possible. The Elara is only 10mm thick at its thinnest point in the chainstay, a dimension that would not have been possible with the extra material stack-up necessary to reinforce a bonded joint.<\/p>\n Factor discussed that one aspect of this bike is that it finally transitions the full gravel lineup to the latest design language of the company. Visually, it is engineering on display, sharing the design language used as a visual footprint across the brand. That also means you\u2019ll immediately recognize this as an aero bike, utilizing the same fork leg design you\u2019ll find on the Factor ONE road bike.<\/p>\n In my discussion with the team, I immediately wanted to know why this bike gets the fork leg design but not the bayonet steerer tube. What I was told was quite simple: it would be overly stiff. The Elara is already a claimed stiff bike, and I was told that much of the ONE road bike\u2019s stiffness actually comes from the bayonet steerer tube design rather than the fork legs. That design was tested on the Elara; however, it was too much for a gravel bike, and the decision was made to go with a traditional steerer tube.<\/p>\n I was told that a part of that decision was also the handlebar design. Using a bayonet steerer tube dictates a proprietary handlebar, and Factor wanted more flexibility for riders. At the same time, the team knows that many riders will prioritize aerodynamics and choose a Factor-designed handlebar, so the brand developed the Black Inc Aero Gravel Bar AB07 in parallel with the frame. The new handlebar keeps the internal routing and aerodynamic shaping you\u2019d expect from the brand\u2019s road cockpits, but introduces a 17-degree flare to the drops.<\/p>\n Alongside the handlebar and frame, this bike comes with new aero wheels to complete the package. Zipp started this trend, ENVE followed suit, and now Black Inc (Factor\u2019s component brand) has created a new take on the category.<\/p>\n As with other Black Inc wheels, these are bold to look at and they are deep. Specs are 64mm deep front and rear with a 30mm internal width and a claimed weight of 1,620 grams. It should be noted that on paper, this doesn\u2019t compare favorably to the ENVE G SES 6.7 Pro, which offers a staggered 60\/67mm depth, a 35mm internal width, and weighs in at 1,580 grams. However, for some, Black Inc\u2019s narrower 30mm width will actually be seen as an advantage. It rounds the sidewalls of a 57mm tire\u2014which will impact aerodynamics to some extent, but also protects the carbon rim edge and reduces sidewall exposure on the tire against rock strikes.<\/p>\n Some will see this as a minor detail, however, it gets its own section because Factor shared just how much it was considered. While some brands, such as BMC, have decided that racing at the front of the pack doesn\u2019t benefit from in-frame storage, Factor shared that the team felt it was important anyway. I was told that it was understood that it likely would not be used in a race situation, but that race winners still trained with the same bike, and that not everyone who buys this bike will be racing at the front of the peloton. To keep the bike as usable as possible, there is in-frame storage and top tube mounts.<\/p>\n The challenge of adding a downtube storage hatch is maintaining stiffness without letting the scale creep up. Factor controlled the weight\u2014with the frameset in a raw finish and size M coming in at 1,100 grams\u2014and I was told that stiffness did not suffer either. To accomplish both goals, the company used TeXtreme carbon to reinforce the downtube. Traditional carbon weaves round yarns together, creating a wavy over-under pattern that leaves microscopic gaps for heavy, non-structural resin to pool. TeXtreme solves this by flattening those yarns into wide tapes that pack tightly together, squeezing out that excess resin. Furthermore, because the fibers lay perfectly straight instead of wavy, they instantly resist twisting forces, reinforcing the hole without bulking up the frame.<\/p>\n Although the bike has been raced this year, it is now available to the public. As I mentioned earlier, Factor says the Elara will not be perfect for everyone. This is a stiff, tight-handling, aero race bike, and \u201cit takes more mental acuity to extract the speed out of the Elara, but it is there when you are able to reach for it.\u201d If that sounds like what you want in a gravel bike, it is available to purchase from any Factor retailer starting today.
