\u201cThank you guys, you\u2019ve made a kid\u2019s dream come true,\u201d Lando Norris said tearfully to his team after crossing the finish line at the Yas Marina Circuit on Sunday, December 7, 2025. The McLaren driver\u2019s third-place finish that day at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix placed him two points above Red Bull Racing\u2019s Max Verstappen for the season. It was a moment the 26-year-old driver had pictured since childhood: winning the Formula 1 World Drivers\u2019 Championship. The result also made Norris McLaren\u2019s first Formula 1 World Champion since Lewis Hamilton in 2008. Calling the moment momentous would be a huge understatement.<\/p>\n
Although celebrations began as soon as he crossed the line, it took time for the full emotional weight of the achievement to register. By Norris\u2019s account, winning the championship gave him a quieter, more complex confidence. It proved that self-doubt and emotional transparency can co-exist with elite performance and success at the highest level. It was also a prelude to learning what comes after achieving the goal that had ordered his life for as long as he can remember.<\/p>\n
Norris\u2019s championship run was the culmination of a relationship that had already spanned nearly a decade. McLaren signed him to its Driver Development Programme at 17, promoted him from test and reserve duties to a Formula 1 seat in 2019, and supported him through the uneven seasons that followed. He arrived while the team was rebuilding, long removed from the era when Senna, Prost, H\u00e4kkinen, and Hamilton made McLaren a regular championship force. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Norris\u2019s development followed a similar trajectory. He showed early flashes of speed, claimed his first podium in 2020, endured agonizing near-wins, then finally achieved his breakthrough victory in Miami in 2024. As McLaren recovered its competitive identity, winning the 2024 Constructors\u2019 title, Norris converted his years of promise into consistent success. By the time he crossed the finish line in Abu Dhabi in 2025, the driver and team had effectively closed one of the longest rebuilding arcs in modern Formula 1.<\/p>\n
The 2026 season, in contrast, has made defending that title far less straightforward. Norris currently trails teenage sensation Kimi Antonelli of Mercedes by triple digits. It\u2019s forced the superstar to redefine success. Sometimes that still means winning, but other times it means extracting points from a compromised weekend or simply maintaining composure when the car or circumstances are less than perfect. <\/p>\n
It\u2019s a challenge Norris is well equipped to handle. He\u2019s established himself as a driver who is unafraid to be open about fear, self-criticism, and the fatigue that comes with a lifestyle of constant travel. His candor has helped him cultivate a public persona distinct from the emotionally armored image typically associated with Formula 1 drivers. Occasionally it makes his life harder, with headlines questioning his mentality and championship credentials, but it has also allowed fans and young drivers to learn from Norris that confidence and victory do not require the total absence of self-doubt.<\/p>\n

When you crossed the finish line in Abu Dhabi last year to become Formula 1 World Champion, a lot came up thinking about the journey that had brought you there. How has achieving that dream changed your sense of self-belief? Was winning the championship what you imagined it would be?<\/strong><\/p>\nIt felt different, honestly. You imagine that moment your whole life, and then when it happens you\u2019re so locked in that it doesn\u2019t hit you straight away. It\u2019s more something you realize gradually, once things slow down and you get a moment with your family and the team. That\u2019s when you think, \u201cOK, this is something I\u2019m going to remember forever.\u201d In terms of self-belief, I don\u2019t think it changed who I am. I still question myself, I still go over every lap. But there\u2019s a calmness now. When things get difficult, I know I\u2019ve been through it before and come out the other side. I don\u2019t have to imagine it anymore. I\u2019ve done it.<\/p>\n
You\u2019ve joined an elite club of McLaren icons \u2014 a lineage that includes Senna, Prost, H\u00e4kkinen, and Hamilton. What does carrying that team legacy feel like? <\/strong><\/p>\nI grew up watching those drivers, so having your name anywhere near theirs is pretty special. I try not to think about it too much, though. If you start racing for a legacy instead of just focusing on the job, that\u2019s when things go wrong. But when I walk through the factory and see the trophies and the old cars, there\u2019s a lot of pride in knowing I\u2019ve added something to that story. The pressure is there, but it\u2019s the good kind. It means what you\u2019re doing matters.<\/p>\n
Has your openness about nerves, self-criticism, and the psychological demands of competing made you a stronger driver, or has it made your life more difficult?<\/strong><\/p>\nHonestly, both. There were times where being open made things harder, because people take what you say and it becomes a headline, and then you spend a whole weekend talking about it. But I don\u2019t regret any of it. Talking about that stuff took a lot of the weight out of it for me. And the messages I\u2019ve had over the years, from young drivers or just people who have nothing to do with racing telling me it helped them, that means more than most results. I\u2019d rather be myself and win than pretend to be someone else and win. Turns out you can do it being yourself.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

The 2026 season has presented a different challenge for you and the McLaren team. Have you had to redefine a successful race weekend when the car or other circumstances are working against you?<\/strong><\/p>\nYeah, definitely. Last year\u2019s success was simple: you win or you beat the guys you\u2019re fighting. This year, with new regulations and everyone learning again, success can be different things. Sometimes it\u2019s getting the maximum out of a car that isn\u2019t quite where we want it, or turning a tough Friday into points on Sunday.<\/p>\n
It\u2019s made me a better driver, I think. Anyone can look good in the quickest car. The weekends where you get everything out of a difficult situation, those are the ones the team remembers, and honestly the ones I\u2019m most proud of.<\/p>\n
Drivers often talk about entering a flow state when they compete. What does that actually feel like for you inside the car? Is it a conscious switch, or something you have to hunt for when you race?<\/strong><\/p>\nIt\u2019s the best feeling there is. When it\u2019s there, everything slows down. You\u2019re doing 300 kilometres an hour and it feels like you have all the time in the world. You\u2019re not thinking about braking, points, or anything. It\u2019s just happening.<\/p>\n
But no, it\u2019s not a switch, I wish it was. You can\u2019t force it. What you can do is set yourself up for it. Good preparation, good sleep, keeping things simple around you. <\/p>\n
What is something about your mechanics and engineers that the average viewer might misunderstand?<\/strong><\/p>\nHow human they are. On TV it looks like a machine: pit stops in two seconds, data everywhere. But these people are working crazy hours, away from their families for weeks. They care so much it hurts. When we have a bad weekend, they feel it as much as I do.<\/p>\n
They\u2019re also really funny. The garage is probably where I laugh the most. And people underestimate how much they shape the driving itself. Everyone thinks the driver does it alone, but a lot of my lap time comes from the work of others.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

A new generation of young drivers is making its presence felt in Formula 1. What stands out to you about the way they race and has your approach changed now that you\u2019re one of the more experienced drivers on the grid?<\/strong><\/p>\nThey\u2019re fearless, and they arrive so prepared. The simulator work, the data \u2014 all of it. They turn up ready in a way that even my generation didn\u2019t quite have. The strange part is realizing I\u2019m one of the drivers they grew up watching. I\u2019ve caught myself giving advice in a briefing and thought, \u201cWhen did I become this guy?\u201d<\/p>\n
For me, the biggest change is I waste less energy. When I was younger I spent so much emotion on things I couldn\u2019t control \u2014 other people\u2019s opinions, luck, all of that. Now I put everything into the car and the team and try to let the rest go. <\/p>\n
You\u2019ve achieved a goal that motivated you for most of your life, where does the next source of motivation come from?<\/strong><\/p>\nI asked myself that about a week after Abu Dhabi, and honestly the answer surprised me, because not much changed. It turns out I just love the process. Turning up, finding a bit more time, solving problems with the team.<\/p>\n
Now there\u2019s the challenge of doing it again, which everyone says is harder than the first one. And there are things outside the car too: Quadrant, the projects I\u2019m building, the person I want to become.<\/p>\n
You constantly hop time zones and live out of a suitcase for months at a time. What are the small things you do to make an unfamiliar place feel like home?<\/strong><\/p>\nI try to keep things simple. When you\u2019re moving that much, routine is what keeps you sane. Training is a big one for me, even on the road. It gives the day structure and clears my head. And I make a point of staying connected to the same people wherever I am. Calls with family and friends make everything feel more normal.<\/p>\n
The other thing is my bags, honestly. My backpack from the TUMI Alpha Bravo collection comes everywhere with me, and everything in it has its place and never changes. Same with my TUMI 19 Degree Aluminum. That case has done a lot of miles with me now.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Speaking of your bags, do you see any parallels between how McLaren builds a race car and how TUMI builds a piece of luggage?<\/strong><\/p>\nAt McLaren, there are people who spend months saving grams in places you\u2019d never look, and when the TUMI team talked me through how they design and test things, it was the same mindset. Everything feels considered and purposeful, nothing is there by accident. <\/p>\n
How do you recognize when the demands of racing and traveling are beginning to affect you mentally? What helps you reset before the next race?<\/strong><\/p>\nFor me, the signs are that I stop enjoying the small stuff. I get short with people I care about, I don\u2019t feel like doing anything, food doesn\u2019t taste like much. Earlier in my career I\u2019d just push through it, and it always cost me on track.<\/p>\n
Now I actually do something about it. The reset is usually simple: golf with mates, proper sleep, time with family where nobody mentions racing. Just slowing down for a couple of days. It\u2019s not complicated, but it works.<\/p>\n
When you imagine the person you would like to be five years from now, what does that version of Lando do differently, both personally and professionally?<\/strong><\/p>\nProfessionally, I hope he\u2019s more consistent in the car. That\u2019s the never-ending project. Fewer weekends thrown away, more of the calm I found last year.<\/p>\n
Personally, I hope he\u2019s better at being present. I\u2019ve spent my whole life living for the next thing: the next race, the next season, the next goal. I\u2019m trying to learn to actually enjoy the moment I worked for.<\/p>\n
When racing is eventually over, what do you hope people remember about you beyond the results you achieved?<\/strong><\/p>\nThat I was honest. That I showed you can talk about doubt and pressure and still get to the top, and that being human isn\u2019t a weakness in this sport. If some kid somewhere saw me struggle publicly and win anyway and thought, \u201cOK, maybe I don\u2019t have to pretend either,\u201d that would mean a lot. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
