Davis guilty of first-degree murder in the 1996 shooting death of Tupac Shakur

Prosecutors never claimed Davis fired the shots, arguing instead that he set the killing in motion as a gang shotcaller

The verdict lands on one of hip-hop’s most mythologized unsolved chapters, a case that shadowed the genre for a generation

Duane “Keffe D” Davis, the 63-year-old former Compton gang figure long linked to the death of Tupac Shakur, has been convicted of first-degree murder in the rapper’s 1996 killing, closing a chapter that stayed open for nearly three decades. A Las Vegas jury returned the guilty verdict on Monday after a trial that ran roughly two weeks, resolving in a matter of hours a mystery that had resisted charges since the night Shakur was shot.

The panel of 10 women and six men convicted Davis of first-degree murder with a deadly weapon, tied to a gang enhancement. He was never accused of pulling the trigger. Under Nevada law, a person who helps carry out a murder can be held as responsible as the shooter, and prosecutors leaned on that principle throughout, presenting Davis as the man who engineered the hit rather than the one who fired it. He remains the only person ever charged in the case and, by the state’s account, the only living occupant of the car the gunfire came from.

At the heart of the prosecution was a revenge narrative. Clark County prosecutors described Davis as a shotcaller for the South Side Compton Crips who moved against Shakur after an attack on his nephew earlier that same night. Much of the case rested not on forensic evidence but on Davis himself, who spent years recounting his role in police interviews, interviews and a 2019 memoir, at one point casting himself as the operation’s on-site commander.

Davis’ defense pushed back on exactly that foundation, arguing that decades-old bragging is not the same as proof. Attorney Michael Sanft urged jurors toward an acquittal, calling it the “only verdict that makes sense in this case.” The jury took only hours to disagree, having heard from roughly two dozen prosecution witnesses against three for the defense.

The courtroom held the weight of it. Shakur’s sister, Sekyiwa “Set” Shakur, wept as the verdict was read, while Davis’ son covered his face. Davis, who had stood silently as the decision came down, later raised a fist toward the gallery on his way out. District Judge Carli Kierny ordered him held until his October 13 sentencing, where he faces a life term. His attorneys have signaled an appeal.

The verdict carries a resonance far beyond a single Nevada courtroom. Shakur, 25 when he was killed near the Las Vegas Strip, is remembered as one of the most influential artists the genre has produced, and his death has been picked over by fans, investigators and conspiracy theorists ever since. The trial sat squarely inside the East Coast versus West Coast mythology of the era, a rivalry that pitted competing camps against one another for dominance in the sound then labeled gangsta rap. The name of The Notorious B.I.G. surfaced repeatedly in the proceedings, a reminder of how tightly the two deaths remain braided in the culture’s memory.

Davis is scheduled to be sentenced on October 13, when a Las Vegas court will decide how the rest of his life plays out against a verdict nearly 30 years in the making.

Related Stories

>Merrell Reimagines Outdoor Footwear With a Duo of All-Black “Metro” Sneakers

>Taemin on Finding Cruelty in Beauty on ‘PHASE 1: Soft Violence’

>FKA twigs Soundtracks and Stars in Burberry’s Winter 2026 Campaign

We got you covered.

Text By

Sophie Caraan

Source

Nbc News

    Tupac Shakur2PAC

[analyse_source url=”https://hypebeast.com/2026/8/duane-keffe-d-davis-found-guilty-murder-2pac-tupac-shakur”]

[analyse_image type=”featured” src=”https://image-cdn.hypb.st/https%3A%2F%2Fhypebeast.com%2Fimage%2F2026%2F08%2F31%2Fduane-keffe-d-davis-found-guilty-murder-2pac-tupac-shakur-tw.jpg?w=1080&cbr=1&q=90&fit=max”] Music Sep 1, 2026 1.0K Views 0 Comments Comments Save Text By Sophie Caraan Source Nbc News Share this article Ron Galella/Ron Galella Collection Via Getty Images Music Sep 1, 2026 1.0K Views 0 Comments Comments Save Summary A Las Vegas jury has found Duane “Keffe D” Davis guilty of first-degree murder in the […]

[2
226,39
post-2126440","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-politics","tag-crawlmanager","tag-hypebeast-com
["GET
