After months of further reporting, handwringing, mud-slinging and general messiness, the NBA <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/7513882\/2026\/09\/02\/clippers-kawhi-leonard-punishment-fine-suspensions-nba-investigation\/\"><span>dropped the hammer<\/span><\/a><span> yesterday.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"ad-container\">\n<div class=\"ad-wrapper article-treatment\">\n<div class=\"ad-slug-container\">\n<p class=\"ad-slug\">Advertisement<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"mid1\" data-position=\"mid1\" class=\"ad place-ad\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><b>The league\u2019s investigation found that the Clippers did, indeed, work around the salary cap<\/b><span> to pay Leonard millions more than what was in his contract, via four separate endorsement deals. It also found that Leonard and his camp pressured the Clippers to do so.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The top-line penalties:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span>$30 million fine for the Clippers, the largest in league history<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span>One-year ban for Clippers owner Steve Ballmer<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span>Forfeit of five straight first-round picks from 2029 through 2033<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span>Six-month ban for president Lawrence Frank<\/span><\/li>\n<li>One-year ban for president of business operations Gillian Zucker<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span>Five-year ban for Leonard\u2019s uncle, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/7560525\/2026\/09\/02\/dennis-robertson-clippers-investigation-punishment-kawhi-leonard-deals\/\"><span>Dennis Robertson<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span>$700,000 fine for Leonard<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>It is, in a word, stunning. <\/b><span>The Clippers released a fiery statement slamming the findings, though the team has little recourse to appeal. Leonard, through his new agent, said he accepts the punishment. It appears his trade to the Raptors will go through, and he will leave a mess in his wake.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The Pulse braintrust debated what this punishment is on a scale of 1-10 for the Clippers, and I voted for an eight. The money hurts, sure, and the bans aren\u2019t fun, but <\/span><b>losing five straight first-round picks can completely hinder a franchise.<\/b><span> And, if we\u2019re keeping a morbid tally here, acquiring Leonard and Paul George in 2019 ended up costing the team 10 first-round picks and back-to-back MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. I don\u2019t even know what to say about that.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span>Zach Harper explained each punishment in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/7560457\/2026\/09\/02\/clippers-aspiration-punishment-kawhi-leonard-steve-ballmer\/\"><span>a helpful guide here<\/span><\/a><span>. In a sport that once valued strong schedules, this was the venue for big-name non-conference matchups to help bolster a late-season resume and, in turn, ratings for college football\u2019s big debut.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"top-league-content-root\"><\/div>\n<p>    {&#8220;endpoint&#8221;:&#8221;https:\/\/api-prd-nyt.theathletic.com\/graphql&#8221;}<\/p>\n<p><span>Except, now, with the 12-team Playoff in full swing \u2014 soon to be more teams, assuredly, too \u2014 that tradition appears moot. Two points:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>There is just one ranked matchup this weekend, <\/b><span>between No. 9 Ole Miss and No. 24 Louisville. That\u2019s it. Last year, we had three matchups between top-10 teams alone.<\/span><span><br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span>As Seth Emerson wrote yesterday, that tradition is over for now. The only entity that can save it: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/7559871\/2026\/09\/03\/college-football-week-1-schedule-nonconference\/\"><span>TV networks<\/span><\/a><span>. Yay?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span>That doesn\u2019t mean this weekend is garbage, though. Despite whatever news comes from the court system today, Lane Kiffin\u2019s debut as LSU coach should be rowdy. And though Clemson enters this season unranked, it\u2019s still a big name.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li><b> No. 9 Ole Miss vs. No. 24 Louisville<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span>This could be electric, and if not, you\u2019ll still get to watch Rebels quarterback Trinidad Chambliss play.
