Ezra Caudell is being treated for \u201cmulti-system trauma\u201d after he crashed hard in Sunday\u2019s Philadelphia Cycling Classic.<\/p>\n
Caudell, 19, was racing the rebooted Classic this weekend with George Hincapie\u2019s Modern Adventure Pro Cycling project.<\/p>\n
The team released a statement Tuesday night to provide an update on his condition.<\/p>\n
\u201cEzra remains hospitalized and is actively receiving care for multi-system trauma he sustained as a result of his crash at the Philadelphia Cycling Classic,\u201d read the note.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe has an incredible team working diligently and family at his bedside. We are grateful for the thoughts and ongoing outpouring of support.\u201d<\/p>\n
Caudell was involved in a collision with Lotto-Intermarch\u00e9 rider Milan Menten early on in Sunday\u2019s race.<\/p>\n
Caudell was knocked unconscious and immediately transported to hospital.<\/p>\n
Menten was also listed as a DNF in the race results, though Lotto-Intermarch\u00e9 did not provide any details on his condition. Menten did, however, share a message of support for Caudell on Instagram on Wednesday morning.<\/p>\n
Caudell is rated one of the rising stars of the U.S. peloton.<\/p>\n
The Georgia-born rider turned pro with Modern Adventure Pro Cycling this winter and immediately raced the WorldTour-ranked UAE Tour with Hincapie\u2019s team.<\/p>\n
The 19-year-old went on to see a full European classics schedule in spring and finished 7th in the elite U.S. national road race this June.<\/p>\n
Philadelphia mayor issues statement of support<\/h2>\n
Philadelphia mayor Cherelle L. Parker posted to X<\/em> after Sunday\u2019s race that Caudell and Menten were both treated \u201cimmediately\u201d after the crash.<\/p>\n \u201cWe are also closely monitoring two cyclists from the men\u2019s race who were injured and required treatment at local hospitals,\u201d Parker\u00a0wrote Sunday night.<\/p>\n \u201cCity first responders, including our Fire Department, on-site medical personnel, and my leadership team responded immediately to the incident. I am grateful for their service. My team and I are at the hospital now,\u201d she wrote.<\/p>\n \u201cOur thoughts and prayers are with both cyclists, their families and teams.
