A handsome, well-proportioned lifted estate. Welcome to the Polestar 4’s sensible sibling: the, um, Polestar 4 SUV.

Funny, because earlier this year Polestar said this new car would follow Swedish automotive tradition, the country being “famous for its estate cars”. So, we’re going with that.

It’s pretty much identical to the Polestar 4, only with a straighter, taller roofline, a squared-off rear end and full-length roof rails. Said roof rails free up an additional 100kg of stuff you can safely transport, too. Probably be able to get a fully-grown Stig up there, depending on what Stig’s had for breakfast, of course.

That additional height in the roof means rear passengers get an additional 2.5cm of headroom inside, while elsewhere there’s a standard-fit glass roof (or the option of an electrochromic one that dims), a few more widget shortcuts on the central display, a Harman Kardon Premium stereo, and a conventional rear-view mirror. Yay!

You can opt for a digital one, though our experience in a Polestar 4 coupe left us a bit cold on this. Peer through whichever mirror you opt for and you… won’t spot 530-litres of boot space, unless you can visualise empty space like Adrian Newey. But that’s how much the 4 Not-An-SUV offers with the seats up.

Seats down the space rises to 1,680-litres. Something like a Mercedes E-Class Estate offers up 615/1,830 litres, so it’s not the most cavernous thing. Looks better, mind.

Largely because barring the new rear-end treatment, the rest of the body and design and indeed the interior has been carried over wholesale from the already dandy Polestar 4 windowless coupe-thingy. Just 48 new parts were designed to turn it into this SUV-estate thingy, apparently.

And speaking of Sir Stig, the white-suited one might be interested to learn about the 4 Not-An-SUV’s stats: wearing the same SEA bones as the coupe, it features dual motors, AWD, 537bhp, 506lb ft, 0-62mph in just 3.9s, and a WLTP range of 373 miles.

A lesser-powered rear-drive version is also on offer, featuring a much more sensible 268bhp, 253lb ft, 0-62mph in 7.3s and 391 miles (WLTP). Both get a 100kWh battery, DC charging up to 200kW and 22kW AC.

You can spec a ‘Performance Pack’ too, which swaps out the passive shocks for active ZF ones, better Brembo brakes, and 22in wheels wrapped in Pirelli P Zeros.

Elsewhere the spec includes vehicle-to-load (V2L), a ‘Camping mode’ (does what it says on the tin, really), and a keen focus on keeping the entire car’s carbon footprint to a minimum. Funny then, that it also gets Google Gemini AI, because of course this resource intensive tech has to be jammed down everyone’s throats at every juncture. And breathe.

Prices? That’ll be £54,750 for the rear-drive car, and £60,705 for the dual-motor version. Performance Pack cars start from £68,250. Polestar’s aiming for the first 4 – no, we just can’t call it an SUV – estates to reach customers before the year is out.

Polestar’s calling it an ‘SUV’ but to TopGear.com’s hopeful eyes, it looks like a lifted estate.
