the landscape throughout the year. Grapes ripen in the foothills near Tashkent, melon fields fill the plains of Jizzakh region during the hottest weeks of summer, while the warmer climate of Surkhandarya brings some of the country&#8217;s earliest fruit harvests. At the same time, more farms are opening their gates to visitors, combining traditional farming with agritourism and allowing travellers to experience seasonal harvests firsthand.<\/p>\n<h2>Vineyards beneath the foothills of Parkent<\/h2>\n<p>Just outside Tashkent, vineyards cover the gentle slopes of Parkent district, an area long associated with grape growing. Benefiting from mountain moisture and favourable climatic conditions, the region produces both table grapes and varieties destined for export.<\/p>\n<p>Among them is the family-run vineyard, established in 2006 on what had previously been pastureland. Today, visitors can walk through the vineyards, learn about grape cultivation and observe harvesting as the season begins in mid-August.<\/p>\n<p>Farm owner Iskandar Urmonov says the farm is gradually moving towards organic production.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe want to turn our vineyards into organic vineyards. By applying different natural fertilisers, we want to make them organic. During summer, melons and watermelons reach maturity under long days of intense sunshine, making harvest season one of the region&#8217;s defining agricultural events.<\/p>\n<p>Planting begins as early as March, with young plants protected beneath plastic covers before the summer heat arrives. By July and August, harvesting is underway and fresh produce is transported to markets and export destinations.<\/p>\n<p>Farmer Bobomurod Mirsaliddinov says the region&#8217;s climate gives local melons their distinctive flavour.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe main advantage is that we have the &#8216;Mirzachul Melon&#8217; brand. It is recognised because of its unique taste and flavour.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He says producers are also testing new varieties while introducing more efficient farming methods.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe want to move to the &#8216;one field-one product&#8217; system, so buyers can easily find the crop they are looking for.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Many harvests are exported to neighbouring countries, while others remain on sale throughout local markets.<\/p>\n<p>Traditional knowledge also continues to guide buyers choosing ripe fruit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is a saying passed down from our ancestors: &#8216;Choose the light watermelon and the heavy melon,&#8217;\u201d says local resident Alisher Azimov.<\/p>\n<p>He also advises looking at the stem.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf the stem is still fresh, the watermelon has just been harvested.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Earlier harvests in Surkhandarya<\/h2>\n<p>The journey then continues south to Surkhandarya, where warmer temperatures allow fruit to ripen earlier than in many other parts of Uzbekistan.<\/p>\n<p>Farmer Yusuf Meliboyev manages a ten-hectare orchard where apples, peaches, plums and grapes are grown together. Different apple varieties mature between June and October, extending the harvest over several months.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe greatest demand is for Gala apples and then Fuji apples,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause the weather in Surkhandarya is very hot, our apples become especially sweet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The orchards use drip irrigation together with canal water when needed, while beehives are placed among the trees during flowering season to improve pollination.<\/p>\n<p>Elsewhere in the region, almond cultivation has expanded rapidly in recent years. Large orchards now cover thousands of hectares, supported by water-saving irrigation systems designed for the dry climate.<\/p>\n<p>Operations manager Suhrob Akabirov says efficient water use is essential.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery single tree has its own drip irrigation system.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After harvesting, almonds are processed, dried and prepared for export. Around 70% of production is sold abroad, while the remainder supplies the domestic market.<\/p>\n<p>Although each region follows its own agricultural calendar, the pattern remains closely linked to climate, water and local knowledge. Grapes ripen in the foothills near Tashkent, melon fields fill the plains of Jizzakh region during the hottest weeks of summer, while the warmer climate of Surkhandarya brings some of the country&#8217;s earliest fruit harvests. For many visitors, following the agricultural calendar offers another way to experience rural life and the people who work the land.Agriculture remains one of Uzbekistan&#8217;s most important sectors, supplying domestic markets while exporting fresh fruit and vegetables to neighbouring countries and beyond. At the same time, more farms are opening their gates to visitors, combining traditional farming with agritourism and allowing travellers to experience seasonal harvests firsthand.Vineyards beneath the foothills of ParkentJust outside Tashkent, vineyards cover the gentle slopes of Parkent district, an area long associated with grape growing. Benefiting from mountain moisture and favourable climatic conditions, the region produces both table grapes and varieties destined for export.Among them is the family-run vineyard, established in 2006 on what had previously been pastureland. Today, visitors can walk through the vineyards, learn about grape cultivation and observe harvesting as the season begins in mid-August.Farm owner Iskandar Urmonov says the farm is gradually moving towards organic production.\u201cWe want to turn our vineyards into organic vineyards. By applying different natural fertilisers, we want to make them organic. If we establish organic vineyards, the door to Europe will be open.\u201dUnlike many vineyards, these vines rely largely on natural moisture rather than irrigation.\u201cWe grow grapes naturally, on rain-fed land, without irrigation,\u201d Urmonov explains. \u201cThe moisture comes from snow and rain.\u201dSeveral grape varieties ripen one after another until late autumn. While Tayfi is mainly exported, Rizamat remains popular on the domestic market, and Kishmish can also be dried into raisins, extending the value of the harvest beyond the picking season.Summer harvest in JizzakhSeveral hours to the south-west, the fields of Jizzakh enter one of their busiest periods of the year. During summer, melons and watermelons reach maturity under long days of intense sunshine, making harvest season one of the region&#8217;s defining agricultural events.Planting begins as early as March, with young plants protected beneath plastic covers before the summer heat arrives. By July and August, harvesting is underway and fresh produce is transported to markets and export destinations.Farmer Bobomurod Mirsaliddinov says the region&#8217;s climate gives local melons their distinctive flavour.\u201cThe main advantage is that we have the &#8216;Mirzachul Melon&#8217; brand. It is recognised because of its unique taste and flavour.\u201dHe says producers are also testing new varieties while introducing more efficient farming methods.\u201cWe want to move to the &#8216;one field-one product&#8217; system, so buyers can easily find the crop they are looking for.\u201dMany harvests are exported to neighbouring countries, while others remain on sale throughout local markets.Traditional knowledge also continues to guide buyers choosing ripe fruit.\u201cThere is a saying passed down from our ancestors: &#8216;Choose the light watermelon and the heavy melon,&#8217;\u201d says local resident Alisher Azimov.He also advises looking at the stem.\u201cIf the stem is still fresh, the watermelon has just been harvested.\u201dEarlier harvests in SurkhandaryaThe journey then continues south to Surkhandarya, where warmer temperatures allow fruit to ripen earlier than in many other parts of Uzbekistan.Farmer Yusuf Meliboyev manages a ten-hectare orchard where apples, peaches, plums and grapes are grown together. Different apple varieties mature between June and October, extending the harvest over several months.\u201cThe greatest demand is for Gala apples and then Fuji apples,\u201d he says.\u201cBecause the weather in Surkhandarya is very hot, our apples become especially sweet.\u201dThe orchards use drip irrigation together with canal water when needed, while beehives are placed among the trees during flowering season to improve pollination.Elsewhere in the region, almond cultivation has expanded rapidly in recent years. Large orchards now cover thousands of hectares, supported by water-saving irrigation systems designed for the dry climate.Operations manager Suhrob Akabirov says efficient water use is essential.\u201cEvery single tree has its own drip irrigation system.\u201dAfter harvesting, almonds are processed, dried and prepared for export. Around 70% of production is sold abroad, while the remainder supplies the domestic market.Although each region follows its own agricultural calendar, the pattern remains closely linked to climate, water and local knowledge.
