Stan\u2019s, the brand best known for tubeless tire sealant, has a new bio-based chain lube called Polar Drip Wax<\/a>. Like other drip waxes, Stan\u2019s Polar Drip Wax is an emulsified wax suspended in a water-based solution. However, unlike others, this one uses \u201cpolar wax technology\u201d that\u2019s said to chemically bond wax particles to steel rollers and pins along the chain.<\/p>\n

Drip wax is more convenient than immersion waxing, though it doesn\u2019t last as long<\/h2>\n

You may have heard<\/a> that chain waxing has advantages over traditional lubes, and tests have shown that immersion waxing offers the best chain wear protection<\/a>. That is, a waxed chain lasts longer and requires less maintenance.<\/p>\n

However, riders shouldn\u2019t confuse immersion waxing with drip wax lubricants like Stan\u2019s Polar Drip Wax. Stan\u2019s lube, along with others in the category like Joe\u2019s Ceramic Chain Wax and Squirt Chain Lube, suspends wax in a liquid, allowing it to be applied directly to the chain like a traditional lube. Once the liquid dries, only the solid wax remains.<\/p>\n

Both immersion and drip wax applications require the chain to be as clean as possible, though immersion waxing is particularly dependent on a chain that\u2019s free of residual lube or other contaminants. Because the chain waxing process is quite involved, some riders opt to send their chain to a professional<\/a> for service rather than doing it at home. Drip wax, on the other hand, is quick and easy to apply.<\/p>\n

Compared to drip wax, immersion waxing lasts much longer between applications. Zinn Cycles, for example, recommends having a waxed chain re-dipped every 1,000 to 1,500 miles. In press materials for Stan\u2019s Polar Drip Wax, the brand says each application of their product should last about 200+ miles.<\/p>\n

Still, Stan\u2019s could have a longevity advantage over other drip waxes<\/h2>\n

Immersion chain waxing is so effective because it allows the liquid wax to reach every pin, link, and roller. Drip waxes like Stan\u2019s use a liquid solution \u2014 essentially water \u2014 to deliver the wax into all the spaces between the links and pins. <\/p>\n

One trick Stan\u2019s may have up its sleeve is that the wax they\u2019re using is polarized and designed to chemically bond to the chain\u2019s steel surface. (Other drip wax lubes rely on mechanical bonding only.) Conveniently, Stan\u2019s says Polar Drip Wax bonds best with a chain that\u2019s been cleaned using their own bio-based drivetrain cleaner because the cleaner leaves a residual polarized film on the chain.<\/p>\n

Stan\u2019s Polar Drip Wax goes on thick like lotion<\/h2>\n

Out of the bottle, Stan\u2019s Polar Drip Wax has a thick consistency similar to hand lotion or a light grease. It gives off a faint odor reminiscent of freshly sealed hardwood floors in a new home. <\/p>\n

Compared to Squirt and Joe\u2019s wax lubes, Stan\u2019s is the thickest. Because it\u2019s more viscous than the others, it appears to dry the fastest, though I wonder whether it penetrates as effectively.<\/p>\n

Though Stan\u2019s Polar Drip Wax is quick and easy to apply compared to an immersion wax job, you\u2019ll want to plan ahead. The instructions say to apply generously to the chain while cycling it through your drivetrain. After waiting five minutes, and without wiping off the excess, apply another coat. Then, Stan\u2019s suggests waiting eight-plus hours<\/em> before riding to give the wax time to cure.<\/p>\n

Bio-based means it\u2019s better for the environment<\/h2>\n

Stan\u2019s has made a significant commitment to bio-based formulations for their line of lubes, greases, and bike-cleaning products, and the new Polar Drip Wax is no exception. Much of the bio-based tech comes from Whistler Performance Labs, a company Stan\u2019s acquired in 2022. Polar Drip Wax is made in the USA, is plant-based, and is PFAS- and PTFE-free.<\/p>\n

A 120ml bottle is priced at $18 \/ \u20ac18 \/ \u00a318.<\/p>\n

We\u2019ll be testing Stan\u2019s Polar Drip Wax<\/a> and other chain lubes this summer and fall to see how they perform on the trail, so stay tuned for an update.<\/p>\n
