If Dallas needs its backup for a short stretch, <strong>Howell <\/strong>offers a much larger sample of NFL game experience.<\/p>\n<p data-mrf-recirculation=\"Links P\u00e1rrafos\" class=\"ue-c-article__paragraph paragraph\">His contract may have also played a role. <strong>Howell <\/strong>signed a one-year deal worth $2.5 million guaranteed, and releasing him would still have left Dallas responsible for his $2 million base salary.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ue-c-article__embedded\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet-lazy\" data-lang=\"es\"><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<p data-mrf-recirculation=\"Links P\u00e1rrafos\" class=\"ue-c-article__paragraph paragraph\"><strong>Milton<\/strong>, meanwhile, had no control over how the competition ultimately played out.<\/p>\n<p data-mrf-recirculation=\"Links P\u00e1rrafos\" class=\"ue-c-article__paragraph paragraph\">\u201cThat&#8217;s out of my control,\u201d <strong>Milton <\/strong>said during the preseason. \u201cThe only thing I&#8217;m able to do is go out there and call the play, and just make sure the offense is moving. Whatever they decide, they decide.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"ue-c-article__subheadline\">Dallas risks losing developing quarterback<\/h2>\n<p data-mrf-recirculation=\"Links P\u00e1rrafos\" class=\"ue-c-article__paragraph paragraph\">That&#8217;s where the decision becomes more complicated. <strong>Milton <\/strong>wasn&#8217;t simply a fringe player struggling to survive roster cuts. He had shown real progress and looked increasingly capable of becoming a dependable NFL backup.<\/p>\n<p data-mrf-recirculation=\"Links P\u00e1rrafos\" class=\"ue-c-article__paragraph paragraph\">The <strong>Cowboys <\/strong>reportedly explored trade possibilities involving him before finalizing the roster but didn&#8217;t find a deal. Now he must pass through waivers.<\/p>\n<p data-mrf-recirculation=\"Links P\u00e1rrafos\" class=\"ue-c-article__paragraph paragraph\">If another team claims him, <strong>Dallas <\/strong>loses a developmental quarterback who appeared to be trending upward. If he clears, the <strong>Cowboys <\/strong>could potentially bring him back on the practice squad.<\/p>\n<p data-mrf-recirculation=\"Links P\u00e1rrafos\" class=\"ue-c-article__paragraph paragraph\"><strong>Milton <\/strong>himself believed the offense was beginning to come naturally.<\/p>\n<p data-mrf-recirculation=\"Links P\u00e1rrafos\" class=\"ue-c-article__paragraph paragraph\">\u201cYou get to do a lot more,\u201d he said. \u201cJust being able to go through that process of a whole year being in this offense to now, it&#8217;s great.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-mrf-recirculation=\"Links P\u00e1rrafos\" class=\"ue-c-article__paragraph paragraph\"><strong>Howell <\/strong>may be the safer choice today.
