Update: Tadej Poga\u010dar underwent successful surgery on his clavicle, UAE Emirates-XRG medical director Dr. Adrian Rotunno said in a statement on Monday.<\/em><\/p>\n \u201cThis afternoon, Tadej underwent successful surgery on his left clavicle after receiving the all-clear to proceed with the operation.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n The procedure went well and he will remain in hospital for post-operative monitoring for a few days.<\/em><\/p>\n When ready, Tadej will travel home to begin his recovery and rehabilitation under the supervision of the team\u2019s medical staff. We will continue to monitor his progress closely throughout the recovery process.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n Tadej Poga\u010dar is in a holding pattern in the early stages of his recovery from the devastating high-speed crash that ended his Vuelta a Espa\u00f1a, but his team isn\u2019t crossing out his 2026 season altogether.<\/p>\n UAE Emirates-XRG general manager Mauro Gianetti revealed Sunday that Poga\u010dar can\u2019t undergo surgery to stabilize his fractured collarbone until at least Tuesday.<\/p>\n Speaking to RMC Radio<\/em>, Gianetti said Poga\u010dar sustained \u201ca quite heavy concussion\u201d when he fell hard in a shocking crash on stage 8 of the Vuelta on Saturday,<\/p>\n Typical concussion protocol dictates that athletes clear neurological checks before they can be put under anesthetic.<\/p>\n \u201cIf all goes well, Tadej can have surgery on his collarbone on Tuesday,\u201d Gianetti told RMC<\/em>. \u201cBecause the fracture is displaced, it\u2019s a fairly significant operation.<\/p>\n \u2018It will be possible either Tuesday or Wednesday, depending on his recovery from the concussion,\u201d Gianetti said.<\/p>\n Poga\u010dar DNFd a grand tour for the first time in his career Saturday when he left the Vuelta a Espa\u00f1a in an ambulance.<\/p>\n Broadcast footage of the seemingly invincible supercyclist bloodied and battered shocked the cycling world. The crash \u2013 which was thought to have occurred at more than 60kph \u2013 left Poga\u010dar with a fractured collarbone, C7 vertebra, and a concussion.<\/p>\n Despite all that, Poga\u010dar put a brave face on it when he issued his first public update on Instagram on Sunday.<\/p>\n \u201cStayin\u2019 Alive<\/em>,\u201d as he defiantly suggested.<\/p>\n Gianetti told RMC<\/em> the 27-year-old remains upbeat while he waits in limbo at a hospital in Barcelona.<\/p>\n \u201cTadej is doing well given the situation he is in,\u201d Gianetti said Sunday night. \u201cTo abandon the Vuelta at a time when you don\u2019t expect it is a violent shock.<\/p>\n \u201cHe suffered a pretty significant concussion, but today [i.e., Sunday<\/em>] he\u2019s doing well. He is in good spirits,\u201d Gianetti said. \u201cTadej says it could have been worse.\u201d<\/p>\n Gianetti\u2019s update to RMC<\/em> comes as the cycling world wonders what\u2019s next for the greatest rider of the current era, if not ever.<\/p>\n After Poga\u010dar won a record-equaling fifth Tour de France in July, the Vuelta was the next tasty morsel on the modern cannibal\u2019s plate.<\/p>\n The world championship road race \u2013 and the chance to follow Peter Sagan with a rainbow jersey three-peat \u2013 was next on the menu.<\/p>\n The Montr\u00e9al champs on September 26 was scheduled as the first of a heavyweight trio of one-day races to close Poga\u010dar\u2019s already blockbuster season. The European championships and Il Lombardia completed the trifecta.<\/p>\n Speaking Sunday, Gianetti refused to rule out Poga\u010dar returning to racing as soon as the Canadian worlds, less than four weeks from now. Poga\u010dar\u2019s agent Alex Carera said similar when he spoke to AS<\/em> on Sunday.<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s still quite early to say,\u201d Gianetti said when RMC<\/em> asked about Poga\u010dar\u2019s planned races. \u201cWe tried to avoid discussing it today because it\u2019s not the right time to make decisions.<\/p>\n \u201cFirst, we need to see how he recovers and how the surgery goes this Tuesday or Wednesday,\u201d Gianetti said. \u201cFrom there, we\u2019ll have a clearer picture of whether he has time to return for the end of the season or not.<\/p>\n \u201cWe can approach this with a bit more calm when Tadej has at least recovered from the concussion,\u201d he added. \u201cIt\u2019s not the time to make decisions based on emotions. We\u2019ll have to wait a few days.\u201d<\/p>\n Poga\u010dar and UAE Emirates-XRG have to wait. However, time is not on their side.<\/p>\n The clock is ticking on road worlds.<\/p>\n The men\u2019s road race rolls out 27 days from now.<\/p>\n \u201cThe timeframe is very short. He\u2019s still in the hospital; he hasn\u2019t had surgery yet,\u201d Gianetti said. \u201cOf course, it doesn\u2019t seem easy to recover in time for the world championships. We\u2019ll see how things progress in the coming days.<\/p>\n \u201cThe clavicle fracture is quite serious. It requires a fairly major operation, and that doesn\u2019t help.\u201d<\/p>\n Racing can wait for 27-year-old Poga\u010dar.
