A helicopter operated by Air Zermatt was dispatched to the accident site on behalf of the Cantonal Valais Rescue Organization (KWRO 144). Rescuers reached the scene but could only confirm that the mountaineer had died.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Related: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/snowbrains.com\/massive-rockfall-on-matterhorn-causes-suspension-of-guided-climbing-tours-on-italian-side\/\"><strong><em>Massive Rockfall on Matterhorn Causes Suspension of Guided Climbing Tours on Italian Side<\/em><\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>The deceased has not yet been formally identified, according to the Valais Cantonal Police.<\/strong> The Public Prosecutor\u2019s Office has opened an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fatal fall.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Matterhorn rises to 4,478 meters (14,692 feet) on the Swiss-Italian border and is one of the most recognizable and sought-after alpine summits in the world.<\/strong> Each year, around 300-400 people attempt to climb the Matterhorn with a mountain guide and another\u00a03,500 <a href=\"https:\/\/zermatt.swiss\/p\/matterhorn-01tVj000005DoH6IAK\">attempt<\/a> it without a guide. Sadly, the mountain claims on average 10 deaths annually, which makes it one of the deadliest mountains in terms of total deaths in Europe behind Mont Blanc.
