You may recall that Shailene Woodley was cast as Mary Jane Watson<\/u><\/a> in The Amazing Spider-Man 2<\/u><\/a>. The Divergent and Big Little Lies actor shot her scenes opposite Andrew Garfield\u2019s wall-crawler for what she now calls her \u201cdream\u201d role in the Marvel-Sony sequel, only to later find out she had been cut from the movie entirely<\/u><\/a> before it hit theaters in 2014.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

In a recent chat with the SAG-AFTRA Foundation\u2019s Conversations<\/u><\/a> (via The Hollywood Reporter<\/u><\/a>), Woodley recalled her disappointment when she learned a year after she\u2019d shot her scenes that she had been cut from Amazing Spider-Man 2.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was cast as Mary Jane for Spider-Man, which was my dream. Oh my god, Spider-Man\u2019s my favorite superhero; Mary Jane was my favorite character growing up. So, when I got it, I was like, \u2018This is so exciting!’\u201d Woodley said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe filmed like three scenes together, me and Andrew Garfield. And then, like a year later, they were like, \u2018So, you\u2019re not in the movie anymore.\u2019 And I was like, \u2018What? What do you mean?\u2019 And they\u2019re like, \u2018We\u2019ve introduced a lot of new characters in this last one, and we\u2019re going to wait for whatever happens between [Emma Stone\u2019s Gwen Stacy] and Andrew [Garfield].’\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThey were like, \u2018Let\u2019s wait for her to die, and then we\u2019ll introduce Mary Jane.\u2019 Which made sense, but then they didn\u2019t make that film. So, there was no reintroduction,\u201d Woodley said. \u201cThat\u2019s what I was told, but again, who knows what the truth is? I could have been terrible, and they were like, \u2018We can\u2019t do this.’\u201d<\/p>\n

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 ends with the death of Emma Stone\u2019s Gwen Stacy, and the filmmakers said at the time<\/u><\/a> that was one reason they cut Woodley\u2019s Mary Jane from the movie. <\/p>\n

\u201cShailene is a brilliant actress, and she did a great couple days of work,\u201d director Marc Webb said. \u201cBut it was very difficult to introduce someone as a competing love interest when so much is on the table with Peter and Gwen.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe bit off more than we can chew,\u201d said producer Matt Tolmach. \u201cWe had a superhero opera, and as great as Shailene is, she didn\u2019t really co-exist with the bigger story we were telling.<\/p>\n

“You can\u2019t have Peter thinking about Gwen every moment, and then there\u2019s this girl next door who\u2019s suddenly there. We weren\u2019t ready for it.\u201d<\/p>\n
