Europe will be entering \u201cflash-flood season\u201d following a blistering summer.<br \/>\n    <\/h2>\n<div class=\"c-article-content c-article-content--earth js-article-content\">\n<p>Europe\u2019s blistering summer was a \u201cgrim illustration\u201d of human-caused climate change.<\/p>\n<div>\n<div class=\"c-ad u-show-for-mobile-only\">\n<div class=\"c-ad__placeholder\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"c-ad__placeholder__logo\" src=\"https:\/\/static.euronews.com\/website\/images\/logos\/logo-euronews-stacked-outlined-72x72-grey-9.svg\" of the year.<\/p>\n<p>July and August provided little relief, bringing with them extreme heat scientists say would have been \u201cvirtually impossible\u201d if it weren\u2019t for the burning of fossil fuels.<\/p>\n<p>Scorching temperatures and scant rainfall cast huge swathes of Europe into drought, paving the way for deadly wildfires that ravaged Spain, Portugal, France, Greece and T\u00fcrkiye \u2013 burning thousands of hectares and resulting in the biggest evacuation effort since the Second World War.<\/p>\n<p>But with September just around the corner, are things finally about to cool down?<\/p>\n<h2>Europe\u2019s September weather outlook<\/h2>\n<p>Data from global weather forecasting platform WFY24 shows that the first week of September will stay warm across the Mediterranean, with daily highs averaging around 35\u00b0C in Rome, 34\u00b0C in Athens and 33\u00b0C in Madrid.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s around 6-8\u00b0C above the seasonal average for early September, suggesting that Europe\u2019s extreme summers are starting to expand.<\/p>\n<p>However, Northern Europe is showing much more \u201ccool and unsettled\u201d conditions, with highs of just 21\u00b0C in Berlin and 20\u00b0C in London. New study may reveal the answer<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p>But the Mediterranean is in for the steepest increase in rainfall. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cSeptember and October are the Mediterranean\u2019s flash-flood season: the sea is at its annual warmest after three months of heating and the first cold troughs arrive overhead,\u201d Ioanna Vergini, founder of WFY24 tells Euronews Earth. <\/p>\n<p>The contrast, she explains, spins up the destructive weather system known in Spain as a DANA (Depresi\u00f3n Aislada en Niveles) \u2013 a high-altitude isolated depression or \u2018cold drop\u2019.. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s what produced Valencia\u2019s deadly floods in October 2024 and Genoa\u2019s repeat events,\u201d Vergini adds. \u201cA hot summer loads it, because the sea is the fuel and it has spent the summer charging.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Every year, rainfall in Valencia rises from an average of 18mm in August to 47mm in September. It\u2019s the same in Palma (21mm to 55mm) and Palermo (15mm to 42mm), while northern European cities like Berlin, Warsaw and Stockholm tend to experience slightly less rain in September than August. These figures are based on normal seasonal averages, however, and not a weather forecast.<\/p>\n<h2>Will El Ni\u00f1o hit Europe this September?<\/h2>\n<p>Media coverage on the weather is currently being dominated by El Ni\u00f1o, which experts have warned could be the \u201cstrongest in living history\u201d this year. <\/p>\n<p>The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) warns that the weather phenomenon, which occurs when sea temperatures in the Eastern Pacific Ocean become unusually warm, continues to \u201cintensify steadily\u201d and is expected to \u201cdominate climate patterns\u201d over the next couple of months.<\/p>\n<p>El Ni\u00f1o events push up global temperatures, paving the way for more frequent bouts of extreme weather. However, these effects are mainly felt in the tropics.<\/p>\n<p>South America, the southern US, East Africa and Central Asia have all experienced increased flood risks during previous El Ni\u00f1os, while droughts and wildfire risk rises across parts of Australia, northern parts of South America and in certain Asian countries like Indonesia.<\/p>\n<p>Despite reports linking Europe\u2019s scorching summer to this year\u2019s El Ni\u00f1o, experts have reiterated the fact that climate change is to blame.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis summer we have experienced heatwaves across Europe reminding us of the effects of climate change,\u201d says Professor Stephen Belcher, the UK Met Office\u2019s Chief of Science and Technology.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis large El Ni\u00f1o is a reminder that natural variations in the climate system are also at play, adding to the stresses of climate change.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In Europe, El Ni\u00f1o\u2019s impacts are much more indirect and tend to be less severe.<\/p>\n<p>According to the UK Met office, the influence of El Ni\u00f1o may start to increase the chances of \u201cwetter, stormier conditions\u201d for northwest Europe in the coming autumn and early winter.<\/p>\n<p>The European Commission states that an El Ni\u00f1o could also make Europe\u2019s autumn temperatures \u201cwarmer-than-normal\u201d, with that warmth building towards next spring. Heavy rain and thunderstorms have already broken the heat and quenched parched soils in parts of the UK, Germany and France.But the Mediterranean is in for the steepest increase in rainfall.\u00a0\u201cSeptember and October are the Mediterranean\u2019s flash-flood season: the sea is at its annual warmest after three months of heating and the first cold troughs arrive overhead,\u201d Ioanna Vergini, founder of WFY24 tells Euronews Earth.\u00a0The contrast, she explains, spins up the destructive weather system known in Spain as a DANA (Depresi\u00f3n Aislada en Niveles) \u2013 a high-altitude isolated depression or \u2018cold drop\u2019..\u00a0\u201cThat\u2019s what produced Valencia\u2019s deadly floods in October 2024 and Genoa\u2019s repeat events,\u201d Vergini adds. \u201cA hot summer loads it, because the sea is the fuel and it has spent the summer charging.\u201dEvery year, rainfall in Valencia rises from an average of 18mm in August to 47mm in September. It\u2019s the same in Palma (21mm to 55mm) and Palermo (15mm to 42mm), while northern European cities like Berlin, Warsaw and Stockholm tend to experience slightly less rain in September than August. These figures are based on normal seasonal averages, however, and not a weather forecast.Will El Ni\u00f1o hit Europe this September?Media coverage on the weather is currently being dominated by El Ni\u00f1o, which experts have warned could be the \u201cstrongest in living history\u201d this year.\u00a0The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) warns that the weather phenomenon, which occurs when sea temperatures in the Eastern Pacific Ocean become unusually warm, continues to \u201cintensify steadily\u201d and is expected to \u201cdominate climate patterns\u201d over the next couple of months.El Ni\u00f1o events push up global temperatures, paving the way for more frequent bouts of extreme weather. However, these effects are mainly felt in the tropics.South America, the southern US, East Africa and Central Asia have all experienced increased flood risks during previous El Ni\u00f1os, while droughts and wildfire risk rises across parts of Australia, northern parts of South America and in certain Asian countries like Indonesia.Despite reports linking Europe\u2019s scorching summer to this year\u2019s El Ni\u00f1o, experts have reiterated the fact that climate change is to blame.\u201cThis summer we have experienced heatwaves across Europe reminding us of the effects of climate change,\u201d says Professor Stephen Belcher, the UK Met Office\u2019s Chief of Science and Technology.\u201cThis large El Ni\u00f1o is a reminder that natural variations in the climate system are also at play, adding to the stresses of climate change.\u201dIn Europe, El Ni\u00f1o\u2019s impacts are much more indirect and tend to be less severe.According to the UK Met office, the influence of El Ni\u00f1o may start to increase the chances of \u201cwetter, stormier conditions\u201d for northwest Europe in the coming autumn and early winter.The European Commission states that an El Ni\u00f1o could also make Europe\u2019s autumn temperatures \u201cwarmer-than-normal\u201d, with that warmth building towards next spring.
