Organisers of a Christian festival say they are “devastated” after a man died and six other people were injured by a falling sign.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Sussex Police said it had been called to the Big Church Festival at Wiston Park, near Steyning in West Sussex, at about 15:38 BST on Friday.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

It was later confirmed a 41-year-old man from Eastbourne in East Sussex had died.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

The Archbishop of Canterbury said she was “sad and shocked” to hear about the fatal incident.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

South East Coast Ambulance service said four of the six people injured were taken to local hospitals for further treatment, with two people having serious injuries.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

The Big Church Festival, which describes itself as the UK’s biggest Christian festival, was founded in 2009.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

The festival began on Friday and was due to continue until Sunday, but a decision was made by organisers to cancel the remainder of the event after the incident.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

“We are working with the emergency services, police and the Health and Safety Executive as they establish the circumstances surrounding today’s incident,” the organisers said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

On social media, author Andrew Ollerton said he was “reeling” after seeing the incident.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

“My wife Charlotte and I were walking just a few paces behind when a huge overhead sign came crashing down on the people in front of us,” he said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

“We rushed with others to lift the sign off them and then administered first aid with others as best we could until the paramedics arrived.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Judah Martin, from Kent, was at the event and said he saw vehicles “speeding” towards the area where the incident happened before campers were told to return to their tents “immediately”.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

“As we had no internet connection, we were unable to access information, except that word spread that there were serious injuries due to a falling sign,” the 20-year-old told Your Voice.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Rayanne Walters celebrated her birthday on Friday at the festival and spent the night before returning to her home in London on Saturday.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

“You could hear people crying in the middle of the night,” she said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

The Reverend James Di Castiglione, rector of the parish of Chanctonbury in which Big Church Festival takes place, says the incident has been a “huge shock to everyone locally”.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
