There is farming equipment in the background. \" class=\"Image-styles__ImageStyled-sc-8c99a12b-0 cVsHni\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"GridItem-styles__GridItemStyled-sc-6cc20e4a-0 tlbDj\"><figcaption class=\"Caption-styles__CaptionStyled-sc-70433723-0 fLsOPx\">Daniel&#8217;s farm has fared poorly in the drought<\/figcaption><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"Container-styles__ContainerStyled-sc-8b855a6c-0 cPmzSx\">\n<div class=\"Grid-styles__GridStyled-sc-70d90311-0 hRsXiV\">\n<div class=\"GridItem-styles__GridItemStyled-sc-6cc20e4a-0 bnCeGm\">\n<p class=\"Paragraph-styles__ParagraphStyled-sc-ffb5f5ba-0 fqhmpl\">England has long been used to hosepipe bans over the summer.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"Container-styles__ContainerStyled-sc-8b855a6c-0 cPmzSx\">\n<div class=\"Grid-styles__GridStyled-sc-70d90311-0 hRsXiV\">\n<div class=\"GridItem-styles__GridItemStyled-sc-6cc20e4a-0 bnCeGm\">\n<p class=\"Paragraph-styles__ParagraphStyled-sc-ffb5f5ba-0 fqhmpl\">But what Daniel has experienced points to something newer and more worrying. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"Container-styles__ContainerStyled-sc-8b855a6c-0 cPmzSx\">\n<div class=\"Grid-styles__GridStyled-sc-70d90311-0 hRsXiV\">\n<div class=\"GridItem-styles__GridItemStyled-sc-6cc20e4a-0 bnCeGm\">\n<p class=\"Paragraph-styles__ParagraphStyled-sc-ffb5f5ba-0 fqhmpl\">The kind of increasingly frequent heatwaves we have experienced and greatly reduced rainfall that we could see over successive summers with climate change, plus a projected increase in demand for water, have raised the prospect that England could at some point run out of water.  <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"Container-styles__ContainerStyled-sc-8b855a6c-0 cPmzSx\">\n<div class=\"Grid-styles__GridStyled-sc-70d90311-0 hRsXiV\">\n<div class=\"GridItem-styles__GridItemStyled-sc-6cc20e4a-0 bnCeGm\">\n<p class=\"Paragraph-styles__ParagraphStyled-sc-ffb5f5ba-0 fqhmpl\">The result could be that by 2055 England will face a shortfall of five billion litres in public water supply a day, almost enough to fill Wembley Stadium four and a half times daily. A mixture of low rainfall, high temperatures and demand put pressure on water supply in England more so than elsewhere in the UK.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"Container-styles__ContainerStyled-sc-8b855a6c-0 cPmzSx\">\n<div class=\"Grid-styles__GridStyled-sc-70d90311-0 hRsXiV\">\n<div class=\"GridItem-styles__GridItemStyled-sc-6cc20e4a-0 bnCeGm\">\n<p class=\"Paragraph-styles__ParagraphStyled-sc-ffb5f5ba-0 fqhmpl\">It is all a far cry from when, in 1818, John Keats wrote: &#8220;It is impossible to live in a country which is continually under hatches\u2026 Rain! Rain! Rain!&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"Container-styles__ContainerStyled-sc-8b855a6c-0 cPmzSx\">\n<div class=\"Grid-styles__GridStyled-sc-70d90311-0 hRsXiV\">\n<div class=\"GridItem-styles__GridItemStyled-sc-6cc20e4a-0 bnCeGm\">\n<p class=\"Paragraph-styles__ParagraphStyled-sc-ffb5f5ba-0 fqhmpl\">But what is really to blame for England finding its water supply so under threat? And are there ways of securing its future?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div data-component=\"subheadline-block\" class=\"Container-styles__ContainerStyled-sc-8b855a6c-0 fMCMex\">\n<div class=\"Grid-styles__GridStyled-sc-70d90311-0 hRsXiV\">\n<div class=\"GridItem-styles__GridItemStyled-sc-6cc20e4a-0 tlbDj\">\n<h2 class=\"Headline-styles__HeadlineStyled-sc-6b3bb442-0 knYLIy\">Growing consumption<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"Container-styles__ContainerStyled-sc-8b855a6c-0 cPmzSx\">\n<div class=\"Grid-styles__GridStyled-sc-70d90311-0 hRsXiV\">\n<div class=\"GridItem-styles__GridItemStyled-sc-6cc20e4a-0 bnCeGm\">\n<p class=\"Paragraph-styles__ParagraphStyled-sc-ffb5f5ba-0 fqhmpl\">Back in the 1980s, people in England and Denmark were using water at a similar rate. But no longer.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"Container-styles__ContainerStyled-sc-8b855a6c-0 cPmzSx\">\n<div class=\"Grid-styles__GridStyled-sc-70d90311-0 hRsXiV\">\n<div class=\"GridItem-styles__GridItemStyled-sc-6cc20e4a-0 bnCeGm\">\n<p class=\"Paragraph-styles__ParagraphStyled-sc-ffb5f5ba-0 fqhmpl\">Residents in Denmark now consume 97 litres of water per person per day, according to Danva, the country&#8217;s water and wastewater industry body. The daily consumption per person in England is 136.5 litres.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"Container-styles__ContainerStyled-sc-8b855a6c-0 cPmzSx\">\n<div class=\"Grid-styles__GridStyled-sc-70d90311-0 hRsXiV\">\n<div class=\"GridItem-styles__GridItemStyled-sc-6cc20e4a-0 bnCeGm\">\n<p class=\"Paragraph-styles__ParagraphStyled-sc-ffb5f5ba-0 fqhmpl\">&#8220;We&#8217;ve actually doubled the amount of water we use per person, on average, in the last 50, 60 years,&#8221; points out Nicci Russell, who runs Waterwise, a water efficiency campaign organisation.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"Container-styles__ContainerStyled-sc-8b855a6c-0 cPmzSx\">\n<div class=\"Grid-styles__GridStyled-sc-70d90311-0 hRsXiV\">\n<div class=\"GridItem-styles__GridItemStyled-sc-6cc20e4a-0 bnCeGm\">\n<p class=\"Paragraph-styles__ParagraphStyled-sc-ffb5f5ba-0 fqhmpl\">She points to changing habits over generations &#8211; from a family having a shared bath once a week to having multiple showers a week, sometimes a day.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"Container-styles__ContainerStyled-sc-8b855a6c-0 cPmzSx\">\n<div class=\"Grid-styles__GridStyled-sc-70d90311-0 hRsXiV\">\n<div class=\"GridItem-styles__GridItemStyled-sc-6cc20e4a-0 bnCeGm\">\n<p class=\"Paragraph-styles__ParagraphStyled-sc-ffb5f5ba-0 fqhmpl\">Households are responsible for nearly 60% of water use in England and Wales. If we had domestic water consumption patterns more like Denmark, Russell says, more than half the 2055 shortfall would be wiped out.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div data-component=\"image-block\" class=\"Container-styles__ContainerStyled-sc-8b855a6c-0 kugUwP\">\n<figure class=\"Grid-styles__GridStyled-sc-70d90311-0 ieGDnl\">\n<div class=\"GridItem-styles__GridItemStyled-sc-6cc20e4a-0 tlbDj\">\n<div data-testid=\"image\" class=\"Image-styles__ImageCardStyled-sc-8c99a12b-1 bOmCce\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static.files.bbci.co.uk\/bbcdotcom\/web\/20260821-111954-d28c495a96-web-3.19.0-2\/grey-placeholder.png\" class=\"Image-styles__ImageStyled-sc-8c99a12b-0 kpUtIW hide-when-no-script\" aria-label=\"image unavailable\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/480\/cpsprodpb\/14f0\/live\/df6fa1e0-a2ed-11f1-b109-879e35c24276.jpg.webp\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Getty Images An aerial view of a dried up river\" class=\"Image-styles__ImageStyled-sc-8c99a12b-0 cVsHni\"><span class=\"Image-styles__CreditStyled-sc-8c99a12b-2 dVFjVB\">Getty Images<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"GridItem-styles__GridItemStyled-sc-6cc20e4a-0 tlbDj\"><figcaption class=\"Caption-styles__CaptionStyled-sc-70433723-0 fLsOPx\">River levels have been at very low levels<\/figcaption><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"Container-styles__ContainerStyled-sc-8b855a6c-0 cPmzSx\">\n<div class=\"Grid-styles__GridStyled-sc-70d90311-0 hRsXiV\">\n<div class=\"GridItem-styles__GridItemStyled-sc-6cc20e4a-0 bnCeGm\">\n<p class=\"Paragraph-styles__ParagraphStyled-sc-ffb5f5ba-0 fqhmpl\">So how could water use in England come down to the levels seen in Denmark?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"Container-styles__ContainerStyled-sc-8b855a6c-0 cPmzSx\">\n<div class=\"Grid-styles__GridStyled-sc-70d90311-0 hRsXiV\">\n<div class=\"GridItem-styles__GridItemStyled-sc-6cc20e4a-0 bnCeGm\">\n<p class=\"Paragraph-styles__ParagraphStyled-sc-ffb5f5ba-0 fqhmpl\">Russell says, even with projected population growth, if everyone in England knocked a minute off their shower time, for example, it would save nearly one billion litres of water a day by 2050.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"Container-styles__ContainerStyled-sc-8b855a6c-0 cPmzSx\">\n<div class=\"Grid-styles__GridStyled-sc-70d90311-0 hRsXiV\">\n<div class=\"GridItem-styles__GridItemStyled-sc-6cc20e4a-0 bnCeGm\">\n<p class=\"Paragraph-styles__ParagraphStyled-sc-ffb5f5ba-0 fqhmpl\">But water companies have been running campaigns urging us to use less water, seemingly with limited success.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"Container-styles__ContainerStyled-sc-8b855a6c-0 cPmzSx\">\n<div class=\"Grid-styles__GridStyled-sc-70d90311-0 hRsXiV\">\n<div class=\"GridItem-styles__GridItemStyled-sc-6cc20e4a-0 bnCeGm\">\n<p class=\"Paragraph-styles__ParagraphStyled-sc-ffb5f5ba-0 fqhmpl\">Will Willoughby, director of water supply at Wessex Water, acknowledges that the negative public perception of the water industry has limited the impact of the message, and the government may be better placed to deliver it.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"Container-styles__ContainerStyled-sc-8b855a6c-0 cPmzSx\">\n<div class=\"Grid-styles__GridStyled-sc-70d90311-0 hRsXiV\">\n<div class=\"GridItem-styles__GridItemStyled-sc-6cc20e4a-0 bnCeGm\">\n<p class=\"Paragraph-styles__ParagraphStyled-sc-ffb5f5ba-0 fqhmpl\">&#8220;I think that would absolutely go a long way to\u2026 undoing some of the disdain towards the water companies and get people on board to help look after our water resources.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"Container-styles__ContainerStyled-sc-8b855a6c-0 cPmzSx\">\n<div class=\"Grid-styles__GridStyled-sc-70d90311-0 hRsXiV\">\n<div class=\"GridItem-styles__GridItemStyled-sc-6cc20e4a-0 bnCeGm\">\n<p class=\"Paragraph-styles__ParagraphStyled-sc-ffb5f5ba-0 fqhmpl\">What really separates England and Denmark is price. As well as water meters being mandatory in Denmark, they also pay far more for their water than we do here.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"Container-styles__ContainerStyled-sc-8b855a6c-0 cPmzSx\">\n<div class=\"Grid-styles__GridStyled-sc-70d90311-0 hRsXiV\">\n<div class=\"GridItem-styles__GridItemStyled-sc-6cc20e4a-0 bnCeGm\">\n<p class=\"Paragraph-styles__ParagraphStyled-sc-ffb5f5ba-0 fqhmpl\">Despite climbing water bills across the UK &#8211; and with them outrage aimed at water companies who stand accused of paying dividends to shareholders when they should have been investing in infrastructure &#8211; there is an argument to be made that consumers are actually not paying enough.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"Container-styles__ContainerStyled-sc-8b855a6c-0 cPmzSx\">\n<div class=\"Grid-styles__GridStyled-sc-70d90311-0 hRsXiV\">\n<div class=\"GridItem-styles__GridItemStyled-sc-6cc20e4a-0 bnCeGm\">\n<p class=\"Paragraph-styles__ParagraphStyled-sc-ffb5f5ba-0 fqhmpl\">In Denmark, the average cost of water and wastewater is \u00a39.45 per cubic metre, here it is significantly lower. Thames Water &#8211; one of the cheapest &#8211; charges \u00a34.21 and Southern the most expensive at \u00a37.06.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"Container-styles__ContainerStyled-sc-8b855a6c-0 cPmzSx\">\n<div class=\"Grid-styles__GridStyled-sc-70d90311-0 hRsXiV\">\n<div class=\"GridItem-styles__GridItemStyled-sc-6cc20e4a-0 bnCeGm\">\n<p class=\"Paragraph-styles__ParagraphStyled-sc-ffb5f5ba-0 fqhmpl\">Daniel Johns, managing director of Water Resources East, an organisation working with farmers, water companies and local authorities, says water in England is &#8220;too cheap&#8221;.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"Container-styles__ContainerStyled-sc-8b855a6c-0 cPmzSx\">\n<div class=\"Grid-styles__GridStyled-sc-70d90311-0 hRsXiV\">\n<div class=\"GridItem-styles__GridItemStyled-sc-6cc20e4a-0 bnCeGm\">\n<p class=\"Paragraph-styles__ParagraphStyled-sc-ffb5f5ba-0 fqhmpl\">&#8220;People assume that it will always be readily available. But even with financial and political backing, building new reservoirs is not straightforward.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"Container-styles__ContainerStyled-sc-8b855a6c-0 cPmzSx\">\n<div class=\"Grid-styles__GridStyled-sc-70d90311-0 hRsXiV\">\n<div class=\"GridItem-styles__GridItemStyled-sc-6cc20e4a-0 bnCeGm\">\n<p class=\"Paragraph-styles__ParagraphStyled-sc-ffb5f5ba-0 fqhmpl\">&#8220;Building enough reservoirs to hold all that water requires good places, which means places where the land is sloping, where we can find a valley,&#8221; explains Dr Ross Woods, associate professor of water and environmental engineering at the University of Bristol.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"Container-styles__ContainerStyled-sc-8b855a6c-0 cPmzSx\">\n<div class=\"Grid-styles__GridStyled-sc-70d90311-0 hRsXiV\">\n<div class=\"GridItem-styles__GridItemStyled-sc-6cc20e4a-0 bnCeGm\">\n<p class=\"Paragraph-styles__ParagraphStyled-sc-ffb5f5ba-0 fqhmpl\">&#8220;I don&#8217;t think that&#8217;s realistic countrywide.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"Container-styles__ContainerStyled-sc-8b855a6c-0 cPmzSx\">\n<div class=\"Grid-styles__GridStyled-sc-70d90311-0 hRsXiV\">\n<div class=\"GridItem-styles__GridItemStyled-sc-6cc20e4a-0 bnCeGm\">\n<p class=\"Paragraph-styles__ParagraphStyled-sc-ffb5f5ba-0 fqhmpl\">One of the sites found to be suitable for a mega-reservoir serving 15 million people is near Abingdon.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"Container-styles__ContainerStyled-sc-8b855a6c-0 cPmzSx\">\n<div class=\"Grid-styles__GridStyled-sc-70d90311-0 hRsXiV\">\n<div class=\"GridItem-styles__GridItemStyled-sc-6cc20e4a-0 bnCeGm\">\n<p class=\"Paragraph-styles__ParagraphStyled-sc-ffb5f5ba-0 fqhmpl\">This picturesque Oxfordshire town on the banks of the River Thames, was until recently, perhaps most famed for its bun-throwing traditions, but it is now at the centre of a national debate.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"Container-styles__ContainerStyled-sc-8b855a6c-0 cPmzSx\">\n<div class=\"Grid-styles__GridStyled-sc-70d90311-0 hRsXiV\">\n<div class=\"GridItem-styles__GridItemStyled-sc-6cc20e4a-0 bnCeGm\">\n<p class=\"Paragraph-styles__ParagraphStyled-sc-ffb5f5ba-0 fqhmpl\">Public opinion on the reservoir has been split &#8211; some have objected to using the site for water, fearing high environmental costs from the destruction of ancient woodlands.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"Container-styles__ContainerStyled-sc-8b855a6c-0 cPmzSx\">\n<div class=\"Grid-styles__GridStyled-sc-70d90311-0 hRsXiV\">\n<div class=\"GridItem-styles__GridItemStyled-sc-6cc20e4a-0 bnCeGm\">\n<p class=\"Paragraph-styles__ParagraphStyled-sc-ffb5f5ba-0 fqhmpl\">The government has now designated it and one other reservoir as Nationally Significant Infrastructure Projects, bypassing some local decision-making processes.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"Container-styles__ContainerStyled-sc-8b855a6c-0 cPmzSx\">\n<div class=\"Grid-styles__GridStyled-sc-70d90311-0 hRsXiV\">\n<div class=\"GridItem-styles__GridItemStyled-sc-6cc20e4a-0 bnCeGm\">\n<p class=\"Paragraph-styles__ParagraphStyled-sc-ffb5f5ba-0 fqhmpl\">But these designations do not overcome the environmental hurdles.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"Container-styles__ContainerStyled-sc-8b855a6c-0 cPmzSx\">\n<div class=\"Grid-styles__GridStyled-sc-70d90311-0 hRsXiV\">\n<div class=\"GridItem-styles__GridItemStyled-sc-6cc20e4a-0 bnCeGm\">\n<p class=\"Paragraph-styles__ParagraphStyled-sc-ffb5f5ba-0 fqhmpl\">Reservoirs, as water bodies, have to achieve &#8220;good&#8221; status for water quality under environmental law &#8211; meaning it must be free from pollution such as from agricultural runoff and invasive species &#8211; which just 14% of bodies currently in England have achieved. They are vital sources of water supply to rivers, which are the first to struggle in summer droughts, and could be another solution to water shortages.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"Container-styles__ContainerStyled-sc-8b855a6c-0 cPmzSx\">\n<div class=\"Grid-styles__GridStyled-sc-70d90311-0 hRsXiV\">\n<div class=\"GridItem-styles__GridItemStyled-sc-6cc20e4a-0 bnCeGm\">\n<p class=\"Paragraph-styles__ParagraphStyled-sc-ffb5f5ba-0 fqhmpl\">These underground stores can be recharged artificially during wet periods, providing a constant supply through drier summers, by encouraging excess rainfall to soak into soils rather than enter drainage networks as happens in heavily built-up urban areas.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"Container-styles__ContainerStyled-sc-8b855a6c-0 cPmzSx\">\n<div class=\"Grid-styles__GridStyled-sc-70d90311-0 hRsXiV\">\n<div class=\"GridItem-styles__GridItemStyled-sc-6cc20e4a-0 bnCeGm\">\n<p class=\"Paragraph-styles__ParagraphStyled-sc-ffb5f5ba-0 fqhmpl\">These sustainable drainage systems, which include measures such as expanding grass areas and soakaways, are encouraged in new developments. However, this is predominantly where there is a risk of flooding, not as a drought-prevention measure &#8211; and there is no legal requirement to have them.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div data-component=\"subheadline-block\" class=\"Container-styles__ContainerStyled-sc-8b855a6c-0 fMCMex\">\n<div class=\"Grid-styles__GridStyled-sc-70d90311-0 hRsXiV\">\n<div class=\"GridItem-styles__GridItemStyled-sc-6cc20e4a-0 tlbDj\">\n<h2 class=\"Headline-styles__HeadlineStyled-sc-6b3bb442-0 knYLIy\">The value of water<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"Container-styles__ContainerStyled-sc-8b855a6c-0 cPmzSx\">\n<div class=\"Grid-styles__GridStyled-sc-70d90311-0 hRsXiV\">\n<div class=\"GridItem-styles__GridItemStyled-sc-6cc20e4a-0 bnCeGm\">\n<p class=\"Paragraph-styles__ParagraphStyled-sc-ffb5f5ba-0 fqhmpl\">When water supplies are no longer plentiful, tough choices have to be made.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"Container-styles__ContainerStyled-sc-8b855a6c-0 cPmzSx\">\n<div class=\"Grid-styles__GridStyled-sc-70d90311-0 hRsXiV\">\n<div class=\"GridItem-styles__GridItemStyled-sc-6cc20e4a-0 bnCeGm\">\n<p class=\"Paragraph-styles__ParagraphStyled-sc-ffb5f5ba-0 fqhmpl\">As well as Daniel Sizer&#8217;s Suffolk farm, the EA has now suspended or limited 1,327 farm licences for abstraction &#8211; taking water from rivers.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"Container-styles__ContainerStyled-sc-8b855a6c-0 cPmzSx\">\n<div class=\"Grid-styles__GridStyled-sc-70d90311-0 hRsXiV\">\n<div class=\"GridItem-styles__GridItemStyled-sc-6cc20e4a-0 bnCeGm\">\n<p class=\"Paragraph-styles__ParagraphStyled-sc-ffb5f5ba-0 fqhmpl\">Paul Tomkins, the Deputy President of the National Farmers&#8217; Union of England and Wales, says the problem is there are legal frameworks in place to ensure there is enough water for nature and to protect the supply for households, but none for growing food.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"Container-styles__ContainerStyled-sc-8b855a6c-0 cPmzSx\">\n<div class=\"Grid-styles__GridStyled-sc-70d90311-0 hRsXiV\">\n<div class=\"GridItem-styles__GridItemStyled-sc-6cc20e4a-0 bnCeGm\">\n<p class=\"Paragraph-styles__ParagraphStyled-sc-ffb5f5ba-0 fqhmpl\">&#8220;Farming is the poor brother of the triplets,&#8221; says Paul.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"Container-styles__ContainerStyled-sc-8b855a6c-0 cPmzSx\">\n<div class=\"Grid-styles__GridStyled-sc-70d90311-0 hRsXiV\">\n<div class=\"GridItem-styles__GridItemStyled-sc-6cc20e4a-0 bnCeGm\">\n<p class=\"Paragraph-styles__ParagraphStyled-sc-ffb5f5ba-0 fqhmpl\">With no rain and no river water, farms like Daniel&#8217;s are facing insurmountable water shortages now &#8211; not in 2055.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"Container-styles__ContainerStyled-sc-8b855a6c-0 cPmzSx\">\n<div class=\"Grid-styles__GridStyled-sc-70d90311-0 hRsXiV\">\n<div class=\"GridItem-styles__GridItemStyled-sc-6cc20e4a-0 bnCeGm\">\n<p class=\"Paragraph-styles__ParagraphStyled-sc-ffb5f5ba-0 fqhmpl\">&#8220;We can&#8217;t afford to have another year like that. We&#8217;re pretty much on the edge of of bankruptcy.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"Container-styles__ContainerStyled-sc-8b855a6c-0 cPmzSx\">\n<div class=\"Grid-styles__GridStyled-sc-70d90311-0 hRsXiV\">\n<div class=\"GridItem-styles__GridItemStyled-sc-6cc20e4a-0 bnCeGm\">\n<p class=\"Paragraph-styles__ParagraphStyled-sc-ffb5f5ba-0 fqhmpl\">Woods says this will only be solved if society can agree how water should be used. &#8220;The limits that we&#8217;re up against at the moment are environmental limits. It&#8217;s not just how much water, it&#8217;s how we use it as a society, and what values we put on the different uses of water.
