Gunfire and explosions were heard across Niger’s<\/a> capital, Niamey, overnight into the early hours of Saturday morning.<\/p>\n

Attackers had targeted Diori Hamani International Airport, which also houses a military air base, and attempted to breach the security perimeter around \u200bthe presidency.<\/p>\n

“Another cowardly attack on Base 101 and once again our defense and security forces ensured … Situation under control,” said lawmaker Bana Wagana Ibrahim, who serves on the Consultative Council.<\/p>\n

Niamey has been targeted by jihadists twice this year: once by\u00a0the so-called “Islamic State in the Sahel” group (EIS) and again in June by their rivals from the Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims<\/a> (JNIM).<\/p>\n

Niger, like its Sahelian neighbors Mali and Burkina Faso<\/a>, has for years been ruled by a military junta that has struggled to stem a jihadi\u00a0insurgency.<\/p>\n

Videos being shared online on Saturday\u00a0showed armored vehicles deployed in the neighbourhood near the airport.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The origin of the gunfire is not yet known. There has been no immediate statement from Niger’s military government.<\/p>\n
