Photo: ECMWF C3S<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-1\" style=\"margin: 8px auto;text-align: center;display: block;clear: both\">\n<!-- GAM 71161633\/SNWBR_snowbrains\/article_hrec_1 --><\/p>\n<div data-fuse=\"article_hrec_1\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong>Riding on the back of an intensifying super El Ni\u00f1o, global ocean temperatures have just reached reached a temperature that, until the last few years, would have been difficult to imagine.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>On August 22, 2026, the daily global average sea surface temperature (SST) reached 21.1\u00b0C (69.98\u2109) across the non-polar oceans, <a href=\"https:\/\/climate.copernicus.eu\/copernicus-daily-global-sea-surface-temperature-breaks-2024-record\">according to ECMWF\u2019s Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S)<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>.<\/strong> The astonishing figure, which is about 0.6\u00b0C (1.08\u2109) above average, surpasses the previous daily record of 21.09\u00b0C (69.96\u2109), set in March 2024. It also eclipsed the previous August record from 2023 (20.98\u00b0C, or 69.76\u2109).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>What\u2019s even more concerning is the timing of the record.<\/strong> Global sea surface temperatures normally reach their annual maximum in March and April, following the austral summer. That\u2019s because the Southern Hemisphere is home to vastly more ocean area than the Northern Hemisphere. Yet this year\u2019s record arrived in late August, at the peak of Northern summer, bucking a well-established trendline that is clearly visible on Copernicus\u2019s chart.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Related: <em><a href=\"https:\/\/snowbrains.com\/el-nino-2026-27-ski-forecast\/\">El Ni\u00f1o 2026-27 Ski Forecast August Update<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Copernicus notes that the measurements come from ERA5, the ECMWF\u2019s global reanalysis dataset, which provides daily climate data stretching back to 1940<\/strong>. color: #ea2e49;<br \/>\n    }<\/p><\/div>\n<h2>Why the Ocean Is So Difficult to Heat (and Cool)<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Oceans have warmed less than landmasses because they have a much higher specific heat.<\/strong> That means it takes more energy to raise the temperature of ocean water than land materials like sand, rock, or dry soil. In fact, it\u2019s about 4-5 times more energy. Ocean specific heat values are about 4,186 J\/(kg*\u2103), whereas land sits at about 800-1,000 J\/(kg*\u2103).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Other factors also insulate oceans.<\/strong> Sunlight penetrates through the water\u2019s upper layers, dispersing heat. Currents also mix heat. That happens vertically, by pushing warmer water below the surface, and vice versa. Currents also disperse heat horizontally by bringing warmer water from the equator to the upper latitudes, and vice versa. Meanwhile, land is opaque and stationary, and heat is confined to the surface. Additionally, the ocean loses a large amount of heat through ongoing evaporation, which cools the surface.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Oceans have warmed less from a numerical standpoint \u2013 <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/essd.copernicus.org\/articles\/18\/3889\/2026\/\"><b>~.1\u2103 of warming vs. 1.81\u2103 on land<\/b><\/a><b>.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> However, due to their high specific heat and dominance on Earth\u2019s surface (~70% of the surface area), the world\u2019s oceans have absorbed the vast majority of the excess heat trapped by the Earth\u2019s atmosphere.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Global Ocean Temperatures: <\/strong>Up and Up<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>The result is a long-term upward trend in sea surface temperatures.<\/strong> The current El Ni\u00f1o is occurring under a backdrop of these rising temperatures. The combination of these two factors produced the record reading.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>\u201cThis record is another clear signal of an ocean under growing stress,\u201d said Samantha Burgess, Strategic Lead for Climate at ECMWF.<\/strong> \u201cEl Ni\u00f1o is adding heat to the system, but it is doing so on top of decades of human-driven warming. As ocean temperatures continue to rise, the risks to marine ecosystems and coastal communities also increase. Photo: www.greatbarrierreefliveaboards.com<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3><strong>Could Cooling be Mission Impossible?\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>The same properties that make the ocean hard to heat also make it hard to cool.<\/strong> Once heat has been absorbed, it cannot simply disappear when the atmosphere begins trapping less solar energy, which is the goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Even if we cut 100% of carbon emissions today and returned atmospheric carbon levels to their preindustrial average, oceans would continue releasing excess heat into the atmosphere for decades, elevating global temperatures.<\/strong> Of course, even that scenario is a dream. We\u2019re currently still producing greenhouse gas emissions at near-record highs.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Moreover, warming oceans could usher in a series of feedback loops.<\/strong> For example, as oceans warm, they become less effective at absorbing excess CO\u00b2. That means Earth\u2019s solar trapping potential increases further.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Record High Ocean Temperatures Are Bad News for Skiers<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Rising ocean temperatures are bad news for the ski community worldwide.<\/strong> Temperatures this high all but ensure that land surfaces will continue to break heat records going forward. While many places on Earth will continue to receive snow, rising snowlines and precipitation patterns will make current ski infrastructure less and less viable.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Ski areas are massive investments.<\/strong> The people and companies who built them, mostly in the 1950s through the 70s, thought long and hard about where to invest significant money in lifts and other infrastructure. At that time, many of these ski resorts were in ideal locations to maximize snowfall and terrain. Since 2000, the West has seen a \u201cmegadrought\u201d on a scale not seen since at least 800 C.E., according to tree ring studies.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>In Europe, rising snowlines are cutting off lower-elevation terrain across the Alps. <\/strong>Many of the Alps\u2019 legendary descents are becoming increasingly difficult to get in condition.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Related: <a href=\"https:\/\/snowbrains.com\/lake-mead-water-level-at-record-low\/\"><em>Lake Mead Hits New Record Low as Colorado River Crisis Deepens<\/em><\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>The End of the Era of Cold Smoke?<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Though it\u2019s hard to measure, it appears snow densities are also on the rise.<\/strong> The atmospheric conditions that produce snow, especially powder snow, are very precise. Normally, we need temperatures of around -10 to -15\u2103 (5-15\u2109) to produce \u201ccold smoke\u201d or \u201cblower\u201d powder. This is known as the Dendritic Growth Zone, or DGZ. Image: Valle Nevado<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3>But What About Increased Precipitation?<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Warmer air holds more moisture.<\/strong> For every 1\u2103 of warmth, the atmosphere can hold 7% more moisture. Modern climate scientists thought some areas might actually see more snow due to increased moisture availability. This hypothesis hasn\u2019t really come to fruition, and where it has, ski conditions aren\u2019t necessarily better. For example, high-elevation resorts in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jstage.jst.go.jp\/article\/sola\/20\/0\/20_2024-023\/_article\/-char\/en?utm_source=chatgpt.com\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Japan seem to be seeing snowier winters<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, but a shorter ski season overall, due to increased warmth on the fringes of winter. Resorts across the world are also seeing warmer temperatures between storms, even when the storms themselves are still cold enough to produce snow.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>I\u2019ve spent my adult life skiing and obsessing about weather. <\/strong>The lesson I\u2019ve taken is that consistently colder temperatures, not necessarily more precipitation, make for the best ski conditions. Of course, I\u2019m seeing that these cold temperatures are harder and harder to come by in our planet\u2019s ski zones.
