And for each of them who walked in through the gas station\u2019s doors for a quick purchase or a delicious lunch from its gourmet deli, it\u2019s almost guaranteed that they remember 5-foot-tall Lupe Baltazar.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cNot a single person in town has ever had anything bad to say,\u201d Jackie Bishop, Front of the House Manager for Mobile Mart, remembered in an interview with <em>SnowBrains<\/em> detailing Baltazar\u2019s legacy.<\/strong> \u201cHe made everybody\u2019s day. I can\u2019t tell you how many people come in, regulars, where part of their annual trip is to come into the Mobile and just see him. People ask me all day long, \u2018Does that guy \u2014 that friendly guy \u2014 still run around and bust tables?\u2019 And I\u2019m like, \u2018Oh yeah, Lupe, he\u2019s still here,\u2019 and everybody just lights up.\u201d Bishop, a 20-season veteran at Mobile Mart \u2014 where inside, the Whoa Nellie Deli operates seasonally from late April through November 1 \u2014 describes Lupe as a true \u201ccultural benchmark\u201d for Lee Vining and the surrounding Sierra. Originally from Tolim\u00e1n, Jalisco, Mexico, the 70-year-old former pumice plant worker spent nearly 18 years serving as the deli\u2019s buser, dishwasher, and janitor, quietly influencing the surrounding community with warmth and charisma.<\/p>\n<p><strong>By day, Lupe moved humbly through Mobile Mart\u2019s dining room in his apron and work clothes, clearing tables and greeting travelers.<\/strong> But beneath his modest routine lived a genuine in-house rockstar. Stashed inside his locker was a special outfit: a specific vest, hat, and red shirt that Luke kept strictly for when live music filled the deli. \u201cEvery band night that we had, if the band would let him sing, he would sing \u2018La Bamba.\u2019 He was singing his heart out,\u201d Bishop recalled. \u201cHe kept his vest and his hat and his red shirt in his locker every day, just in case. He was like Superman and Clark Kent. Lupe had no idea who the high-profile musicians were, but after the intermission, he donned his signature vest and hat, stepped out onto the floor, and delivered what would be his final performance. Staff members rushed out with their phones to film and cheer on their friend, completely unaware it was his farewell show. \u201cMy friend Grub and I kind of like to think that Father John Misty and Jenny Lewis opened for Lupe\u2019s last show,\u201d Bishop recalled with a smile. \u201cThey were his openers.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-15\" style=\"margin: 8px auto;text-align: center;display: block;clear: both\">\n<\/div>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"3\"><strong>Lupe joined the Mobile Mart team 18 seasons ago after the local pumice plant where he previously worked shut down.<\/strong> Over the nearly two decades that followed, his presence became defined by a steady, enigmatic optimism and everyday whimsy that extended far beyond the deli walls. Local YARTS (Yosemite Area Regional Transportation System) bus drivers were known to make special detours into town in the morning just to give Lupe a ride to work. I couldn\u2019t even be mad at him.\u201d Whenever kitchen tools vanished into the sink drain, staff would often yell out \u201cpinche Lupe!\u201d His calm and lovable personality was woven into the business. Reflecting on Lupe\u2019s unmistakable presence across the Eastern Sierra ski community, <em>SnowBrains<\/em> CEO Miles Clark, an annual patron of the Mobile Mart, captured what made the man so unforgettable: \u201cHe was jovial, hard working, and he looked you in the eyes. He meant to be there. He\u2019d found his place in the world and wore it on his sleeve. He was so short that it made me smile and he knew what my smile was about. Finding him resting peacefully on the floor with no signs of pain, one of the responding volunteers held his hand during resuscitation efforts and softly sang \u201cLa Bamba\u201d to him, offering a deeply moving, loving goodbye. At this time the exact cause of Lupe\u2019s passing is unclear; it is thought, however, that he succumbed to health-related issues.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"6\"><strong>To celebrate Lupe\u2019s legacy, the Mobile Mart team is organizing a tribute karaoke night on Saturday, August 29.<\/strong> While any song is welcome, the evening will feature endless, passionate renditions of \u201cLa Bamba\u201d because, as Bishop noted, \u201cthat\u2019s what Lupe would want.
