Confidence is strongest from Thursday afternoon, August 27, through early Saturday, August 29. Another colder pulse may refresh southern slopes Sunday and Monday before larger uncertainty takes over next week.

Most individual models converge on the ongoing storm’s timing and southern focus through Friday, but intensity differs because one solution is markedly drier. They broadly agree that southern snow levels rise from 600-1,200 meters Thursday toward 1,500-1,800 meters Friday, turning lower-mountain precipitation wetter while preserving snow on upper terrain. SLRs mostly run 3-9, so expect dense to very wet snow rather than blower powder. Wind forecasts diverge most around Canterbury, where gusts may reach 110-150 km/h and disrupt Mt. Hutt operations. Porters, Ohau, and Mount Dobson are closed Thursday, while other open southern resorts may still see intermittent weather holds.

From Saturday evening through Monday, the individual models converge on another southern pulse but differ on onset by about 12 hours and on how far inland the heavier bands reach. A conservative outcome is another 5-15 cm across favored Southern Lakes slopes, with locally higher amounts possible. Snow levels should fall from around 1,300-1,600 meters to below 1,000 meters late in the pulse, and SLRs improve from roughly 5-8 to 8-12, changing dense snow to fairer-quality turns. Wind forecasts converge on gusty high terrain Sunday, so lift exposure matters. North Island totals should remain in the single digits.

Agreement breaks down sharply from Wednesday onward, so timing, totals, snow levels, and wind impacts are all speculative. The GFS is the most aggressive with a Wednesday-Thursday southern wave, while other guidance is lighter or misses it, making only a brief upper-mountain refresh the prudent expectation. A more notable Friday-through-Sunday signal appears in ECMWF and AIFS, with a broad 10-30 cm possibility for the Southern Lakes, but GFS is lighter and GDPS is often dry there early in the period. The colder solutions drive snow levels below 1,000 meters by Sunday, while warmer ones retain 1,300-1,700-meter levels; the same spread keeps wind impacts uncertain.

New Zealand Snow Forecast Resort Totals (Thu Aug 27 – Sat Aug 29)

Ohau – 20-25 cm

Cardrona – 18-22 cm

Treble Cone – 17-21 cm

The Remarkables – 13-16 cm

Coronet Peak – 8-10 cm

Mount Dobson – 6-7 cm

Porters – 4-5 cm

Mt.
