\n\tSelena Gomez is hitting back hard against claims that she was involved in fraud at the mental health startup Wondermind, saying she had nothing to do with the situation and calling the lawsuit \u201cegregiously improper and legally deficient.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tGomez\u2019s lawyers filed a motion on Wednesday (Aug. 26), obtained by Billboard<\/em>, to dismiss the pop star and actress from a lawsuit brought two weeks ago by five Wondermind investors. These investors allege they were duped into investing $1.2 million in the struggling company led by Gomez\u2019s mother, Mandy Teefey<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

    \n\t\u201cThe notion that Ms. Gomez engaged in any form of \u2018fraud\u2019 is absurd,\u201d writes a team of lawyers led by Mathew Rosengart<\/strong>, who\u2019s best known for helping Britney Spears end her conservatorship. \u201cShe should never have been dragged into this action, and we respectfully submit she must be dismissed.\u201d<\/p>\n

    \n\tThe lawsuit centers on claims that Teefey and her former co-CEO, Daniella Pierson<\/strong>, misrepresented the company\u2019s structure and finances to investors Brent Saunders<\/strong>, Marc Roberts<\/strong>, EJ Solimine<\/strong>, Andrew Resnick<\/strong> and Mark Peikin<\/strong>. One allegation is that Teefey and Pierson falsely said Gomez would be heavily involved as Wondermind\u2019s head of marketing, when in reality the star worked to \u201cactively distance\u201d herself from the company.<\/p>\n

    \n\tAccording to Gomez\u2019s lawyers, this claim demonstrates in and of itself that she should not be involved in the lawsuit. The attorneys say that since Gomez had no role in Wondermind\u2019s fundraising or management, she \u201ccould not possibly have engaged in any \u2018fraud.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

    \n\tThe lawsuit tries to plead around this issue by suggesting that Gomez had access to Wondermind\u2019s financial numbers, and thus she must have known that company investors were being lied to. But Gomez\u2019s lawyers say this is faulty too.<\/p>\n

    \n\t\u201cThe mere fact that Ms. Gomez \u2014 who is literally one of the world\u2019s busiest women \u2014 might have had the ability to request information by virtue of being a co-founder\/consultant is not enough,\u201d reads the motion to dismiss. \u201cThe lack of a single allegation that Ms. Gomez ever said anything about Wondermind\u2019s operational state or financial condition \u2014 or any allegations stating that Ms. Gomez was privy to the other Defendants\u2019 communications with Plaintiffs \u2014 requires dismissal of the fraud claims against Ms. Gomez.\u201d<\/p>\n

    \n\tIn a statement sent to Billboard<\/em>, Rosengart says their motion demonstrates that \u201cthe claims against her are completely meritless, if not frivolous.\u201d<\/p>\n

    \n\t\u201cIn addition to filing our motion, we are exploring other avenues of relief for Ms. Gomez, including sanctions against Plaintiffs for improperly including her,\u201d adds Rosengart.<\/p>\n

    \n\tThe investors\u2019 attorneys did not immediately return a request for comment on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

    \n\tWondermind launched in 2021 with plans for a suite of mental health media initiatives, including a digital magazine, mobile app and podcast. The company was thrust into the spotlight last year, when the Cut <\/em>published a bombshell article reporting that the company\u2019s finances were in dire condition due in part to Teefey\u2019s alleged substance abuse issues and erratic behavior.<\/p>\n

    \n\tIn the Cut<\/em> article, Teefey denied allegations of company mismanagement and said Wondermind remained viable: \u201cI started Wondermind because I wanted to help people with mental illness,\u201d she said in a statement to the magazine. \u201cIt\u2019s unfortunate that a few disgruntled employees with an ax to grind can spread lies about me and distort the truth. Even more disappointing that the media is willing to amplify their lies.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
