He had wounds all across his right leg and left arm.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can\u2019t handle this pain anymore,\u201d Uijtdebroeks wept when he reached the finish Tuesday, 28 minutes behind Tadej Poga\u010dar\u2019s race-killing move.<\/p>\n<p>Initially, Movistar was planning to keep the young Belgian talent in the race.<\/p>\n<p>Six weeks ago at the Tour de France, the team had kept Uijtdebroeks racing through a 40-degree fever. (Photo: Getty Images)<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Uijtdebroeks should have had top-10 potential at the Vuelta a Espa\u00f1a.<\/p>\n<p>The hotly-tipped Belgian talent had the best season of his career in 2025 with Visma-Lease a Bike and hit top-10s this year with Movistar at Volta a Catalunya and Tour Auvergne-Rh\u00f4ne-Alpes.<\/p>\n<p>Alongside Enric Mas, the born climber could have given the Vuelta\u2019s home team a hefty 1-2 GC threat.<\/p>\n<p>But he started the race underprepared and unfit, and hemorrhaged time as soon as stage 1.<\/p>\n<p>If the writing wasn\u2019t on the wall for Uijtdebroeks after the Monaco <em>gran salida<\/em>, it definitely was on stage 2.<\/p>\n<p>He crashed hard and sustained what Movistar described as \u201ca wound and abrasions to his right hip and knee, as well as to his left elbow and arm. He also sustained a trauma to his left ankle.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad-placeholder-wrapper relative w-full border-t border-b border-border-light col-span-full my-3 md:col-span-10 md:col-start-2\">\n<div class=\"mb-[30px] min-h-[30px] text-center\"><span class=\"font-utility-4 font-medium tracking-[1px] text-neutral-500 uppercase\">ADVERTISEMENT<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"ad-placeholder -mt-[30px] mb-[30px] flex min-h-[250px] w-full items-center justify-center\">\n<div class=\"w-full \">\n<div id=\"in-content-leaderboard-in-content-leaderboard-I1-P0-CMI0\" class=\"flex justify-center text-left\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The next day, Monday morning, Movistar shared videos of the chipper youngster limping around the team hotel, swathed in gauze.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWalking is difficult, but fortunately I don\u2019t have to walk,\u201d he told <i>Het Laatste Nieuws<\/i>\u00a0the next day, Tuesday. \u201cAt the moment, the doctors say I can carry on. Normally, it can\u2019t really get any worse.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The pain clearly wasn\u2019t isolated to walking. Uijtdebroeks unraveled in Tuesday\u2019s explosive stage across the roof of Andorra.<\/p>\n<p>The question Tuesday was \u2013 why is he even in the race?<\/p>\n<p>If he cannot walk properly, he\u2019s probably cooked.<\/p>\n<p>Mas might have moved up to podium contention on Tuesday\u2019s 4th stage, but Uijtdebroeks wouldn\u2019t be able to offer his teammate much help.<\/p>\n<p>Movistar sidestepped the issue in its post-stage report Tuesday as it celebrated Mas\u2019 move to third overall.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad-placeholder-wrapper relative w-full border-t border-b border-border-light col-span-full my-3 md:col-span-10 md:col-start-2\">\n<div class=\"mb-[30px] min-h-[30px] text-center\"><span class=\"font-utility-4 font-medium tracking-[1px] text-neutral-500 uppercase\">ADVERTISEMENT<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"ad-placeholder -mt-[30px] mb-[30px] flex min-h-[250px] w-full items-center justify-center\">\n<div class=\"w-full \">\n<div id=\"in-content-leaderboard-in-content-leaderboard-I2-P0-CMI0\" class=\"flex justify-center text-left\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cCian has again made an effort to complete the stage and reach the finish line, in a new display of courage in the face of the adversities that have crossed his path during this season,\u201d the team wrote after he limped to the line, 28 minutes back .<\/p>\n<div class=\"o-embed\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"es\" dir=\"ltr\">Las l\u00e1grimas de Cian Uijtdebroeks tras llegar el \u00faltimo a la l\u00ednea de meta \u2764\ufe0f\u200d\ud83e\ude79<\/p>\n<p>El belga, que arrastra heridas, abrasiones y un traumatismo en el tobillo izquierdo, ha completado la etapa de Andorra y demostrado su coraje y pundonor.#LaVuelta26 pic.twitter.com\/qnAxEe07Vw<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Eurosport.es (@Eurosport_ES) August 25, 2026<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<h2>Uijtdebroeks raced through a 40-degree fever at the Tour de France<\/h2>\n<p>That wasn\u2019t the first time Uijtdebroeks and Movistar has been in the spotlight for their medical decisions this summer.<\/p>\n<p>Uijtdebroeks revealed before the Vuelta a Espa\u00f1a to <em>Het Nieuwsblad<\/em> that the sickness he controversially raced through at the Tour de France was so significant he had insisted on daily heart screenings.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI had a fever of 40 degrees,\u201d Uijtdebroeks told <em>Nieuwsblad<\/em>. \u201cI went to the hospital daily for check-ups. To see if there really was no risk to the heart.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Contrastingly, Movistar had claimed during the Tour that Uijtdebroeks was riding at 37.3 degrees.<\/p>\n<p>At the time, the news he was racing with any hint of a temperature blew up a storm in Belgian media. Warnings of long-term heart complications circled the press.<\/p>\n<p>Uijtdebroeks\u00a0told <em>Het Nieuwsblad<\/em> this week he had insisted to Movistar he would only continue if he knew he wasn\u2019t at risk.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey examined whether there was inflammation on the heart and performed ultrasounds. We did that several times during the Tour de France to ensure it remained safe. But I clearly indicated that I did not want to take any risks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Uijtdebroeks ultimately got so sick at the Tour de France that he abandoned on stage 6.<\/p>\n<p>Struggling to recover, he was subject to further heart checks in the following weeks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe checked my heart and looked at my blood values afterward to see when I could start training harder again,\u201d he said. \u201cBut that took longer than expected.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe plan was to ride the Cl\u00e1sica San Sebasti\u00e1n and the Vuelta a Burgos [before the Vuelta], but I wasn\u2019t ready for it. Certainly not physically, and perhaps not mentally either.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Uijtdebroeks didn\u2019t race in the six weeks between him abandoning the Tour and lining up for the Vuelta\u2019s opening TT last Saturday.
