I started with a decision: leave a safe corporate job, bet on a small idea, and figure out the rest along the way.

That leap has since grown into a full line of trail-tested apparel, a physical home base in Hendersonville, North Carolina, and a giving program that’s already put more than $110,000 back into the trails we all love.

The early days looked like most bootstrapped startups: working out of the house, then the garage, then finally outgrowing both. In 2019, I partnered with Seth Alvo from Berm Peak and took over his merchandise line. That partnership helped fuel additional growth, and the next move became obvious: in 2021, we bought a commercial property in Hendersonville and renovated it ourselves, turning it into a retail storefront, the Cognative Cafe, and an Airbnb, all under one roof.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1043" height="670" data-id="725257" src="image/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns%3D%22http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg%22%20viewBox%3D%220%200%201043%20670%22%3E%3C%2Fsvg%3E" data-src="https://images.singletracks.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/11.png" alt="A cozy café interior featuring wooden beams and furnishings. It was a brutal process keeping the brand running with my team while being hands on in the remodel process through every step of the way. Three years later, we’re really proud of what we’ve built here, not just for us but for our community as well.

Apparel Built to Disappear

Ask us what makes a piece of Cognative apparel good, and the answer isn’t a trendy new design or an overbuilt product with features you’ll never actually use.

Our goal is that you never think about what you’re wearing on the ride. If our clothing is doing its job, you’re comfortable. Shorts don’t snag on the seat. Zippers don’t fail mid-ride. You stay cool and dry. You stop thinking about the gear and focus on just the ride and immerse yourself in the full MTB experience. Looking good is just an added bonus.

That problem-first approach shaped our breakout product: the Guide Trail Shorts and Pants.

We surveyed more than 500 riders to find out exactly what was going wrong with the shorts already on the market. Five years later, the Guide Trails Shorts and Pants are still one of our top sellers and the go-to short for thousands of riders — a rare feat in an apparel category where “flagship” products often get quietly discontinued within a season or two due to quality or design issues.

That same process — identify the real problem, design against it, test with actual riders — is exactly what shows up in our current lineup. But once Cognative MTB was up and running, a reality became impossible to ignore: the trails my customers and I rode every weekend were chronically underfunded. Local nonprofits were filling that gap by maintaining and building new trails and advocating for mountain bike access on public land. Once I saw how much of that work fell on volunteer-run nonprofits, giving back wasn’t going to be an afterthought. It became part of our mission from the very beginning.

That commitment became our 2% For the Trails program, which routes a percentage of every sale directly to trail advocacy through non-profit trail clubs. It’s a simple mechanic with an outsized result: over $110,000 donated to date, funding real impact on the trail systems where we all actually ride.

Shop the Guide Trail Shorts, the Catalyst Shirt, the full jersey lineup, and the custom apparel program at CognativeMTB.com.

Keep up with the latest mountain bike news by adding Singletracks as a preferred source on Google.

Press releases are published on behalf of our advertising partners.
