A least 15\u00a0infants were killed after a fire broke out at the maternity ward of a hospital in Islamabad, Pakistan<\/a>, on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

“A fire broke out on the third floor of the MCH Ward at PIMS Hospital,” the district office of Islamabad said.<\/p>\n

Officials said 16 newborns were in the ward at the time, adding that one was rescued.<\/p>\n

The fire broke out at around 6:45 a.m. (0145 UTC) when an air conditioning unit\u00a0exploded inside the nursery, rescuers said.<\/p>\n

Investigation underway<\/h2>\n

Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has ordered an\u00a0immediate investigation into the incident.<\/p>\n

“A tragedy involving children is an irreparable loss,” he said in a statement.<\/p>\n

“Those \u200bresponsible should be identified, and \u200bthe strictest action should be taken.”<\/p>\n

The incident is one of the deadliest hospital fires in recent memory in Pakistan, where healthcare is subsidized but public hospitals\u00a0are often\u00a0are under-resourced and overburdened.<\/p>\n
