This is the sort of scenario people are dealing with as summer temperatures have made a popular kids&#8217; toy an unexpected hot car danger.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">NeeDoh fidget blobs can offer sensory relief from stress or anxiety, the maker,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/schylling.com\/brand\/needoh\/\" target=\"_blank\">Schylling<\/a>, says on its\u00a0website. But they&#8217;re not designed to cope with extreme temperatures, according to\u00a0the warning on the box. On a warm day under the sun, your dashboard can reach 160 degrees Fahrenheit. In fact, <a href=\"https:\/\/ufhealth.org\/stories\/2023\/vehicle-heat-safety-for-children\" target=\"_blank\">University of Florida Health<\/a> confirmed that the interior of a sun-baked car can hit 100 degrees within half an hour even on a mild, 75-degree day. <a href=\"https:\/\/med.stanford.edu\/news\/all-news\/2005\/07\/parked-cars-get-dangerously-hot-even-on-cool-days-stanford-study-finds.html\" target=\"_blank\">Stanford University<\/a> research showed that within an hour, the temperature inside a car rises an average of 40 degrees.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">So it&#8217;s not surprising that whatever&#8217;s lying around in the interior can be damaged or become dangerous due to heat. That can include <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jalopnik.com\/2197095\/common-things-to-never-leave-in-hot-car\/\" target=\"_blank\">common objects you might leave behind<\/a>, or that your child might leave behind, like milk-filled sippy cups and toys \u2014 such as a delightfully squishy NeeDoh fidget blob. Left to simmer in a car, NeeDoh innards can transform into little lava bombs and cause serious skin damage if the blobs burst. This has to do not only with the temperature of the material but also with its chemical makeup.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"columns-holder \">\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The NeeDoh box warning is there because science dictates that the soft, pliable thermoplastic rubber shells can begin to destabilize when exposed to such thermal variation. Then, the magical glob of goop inside a NeeDoh can leak out. Depending on which NeeDoh you get, that goop is either polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) \u2014 the same water-soluble stuff that coats pills \u2014 or maltose, which is a doughy sugar used in cooking\u00a0that retains heat.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The goop also sticks to skin like tar, continuing to burn as long as it remains hot. News outlets nationwide have chronicled NeeDoh burn incidents, some fueled by a social media trend that actively defies NeeDoh warning labels. Meanwhile, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.krqe.com\/news\/new-mexico\/new-mexico-teen-gets-3rd-degree-burns-from-viral-needoh-toy-after-leaving-it-in-hot-car\/\" target=\"_blank\">KRQE<\/a>\u00a0reported that a New Mexico teen suffered third-degree burns resulting from a NeeDoh left in a hot car for several hours.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Unfortunately, the climate isn&#8217;t helping mitigate the dangers. Spokane, Washington was recently devastated by wildfires. Europe is still burning, and much of the Southern U.S. is facing extreme temperatures into triple digits, even as we edge toward September. To put a 160-degree dashboard in perspective, water causes third-degree burns within one second at\u00a0156 degrees \u2013\u00a0it takes five seconds at 140 degrees. Given the forecast and how little time it takes for interiors to sun bake, it&#8217;s not only possible for the things inside your car to reach temperatures high enough to scald; it&#8217;s probable.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"columns-holder \">\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Obviously, hot car conditions don&#8217;t end with summer. And depending on where you live, this could be a year-round concern. When temperatures rise, there&#8217;s a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jalopnik.com\/2136792\/science-trick-to-cool-down-hot-car-in-seconds\/\" target=\"_blank\">science trick to cool a scorching interior<\/a>.
