So far, the song about a no-good relationship has reached a No. 50 high on the Billboard Hot 100 \u2014 and is one of the first true chart hits of a movement that started almost a decade ago: hyperpop. Since emerging, the subgenre has undergone countless permutations but has retained the same frenetic energy, unguarded emotion, lo-fi production and DIY aesthetic of its musical precursors, while producing streaming hits of various degrees by Penelope Scott (\u201cRat\u201d), C\u2013tsniffer (\u201cMeant to Be\u201d) and Laydownrot (\u201cPerfect Face\u201d), among others. But with \u201cMisery,\u201d hyperpop could enter its next phase this fall.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cI think, especially post-COVID, more people are more online,\u201d Kamgaing says of why hyperpop is finally starting to bubble over. \u201cPeople used to say, \u2018It\u2019s just the internet,\u2019 but I think now we\u2019ve come to a position in society where the internet is so intertwined with the real world, and it\u2019s sort of got this symbiotic relationship.
