The boy was eventually found sitting alone on a bench outside a mountain hut on August 20, prompting staff to contact police. Japanese authorities later located the boy\u2019s father, who had continued climbing toward the summit with his other son.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Related: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/snowbrains.com\/mount-fuji-japan-climber-rescued-twice-in-four-days-after-returning-for-lost-phone\/\"><em><strong>Mount Fuji, Japan, Climber Rescued Twice in 4 Days After Returning for Lost Phone<\/strong><\/em><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>The incident occurred on the Fujinomiya Trail, one of four principal routes up Japan\u2019s highest mountain, on Thursday, August 20, 2026. <\/strong>Police said the boy was unharmed and was eventually reunited with his father.<\/p>\n<p><strong>According to Japanese broadcaster <a href=\"https:\/\/news.tv-asahi.co.jp\/news_society\/articles\/000527763.html\">TV Asahi<\/a>, the boy told authorities that his father had instructed him to wait for approximately eight hours.<\/strong> The child reportedly had only snacks and a soft drink and did not have any money with him.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The family, from Nagoya, had begun climbing around 7 a.m.<\/strong> The father, his seventh-grade son and the 7-year-old reached the sixth station before the younger boy became tired and began complaining that he could not continue. The father and older brother then continued upward, according to Kyodo News.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-15\" style=\"margin: 8px auto;text-align: center;display: block;clear: both\">\n<\/div>\n<p><strong>Staff at the mountain hut reportedly heard what sounded like an argument between the father and son. <\/strong>When they went outside, they found the boy sitting alone on a bench. One Japanese report said staff heard the father tell the boy, in effect, that he really would leave him behind \u2014 \u201cI\u2019m really leaving you here!\u201d staff reported as hearing. Another <a href=\"https:\/\/www.j-cast.com\/2026\/08\/24517342.html\">reported<\/a> that the father warned the boy that it would be cold if he waited for eight hours.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The boy was left with adequate hiking clothing but apparently little else.<\/strong> According to TV Asahi\u2019s reporting, he had snacks and a soft drink but no money.\u00a0Mountain hut employees took the boy into their care and contacted police.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Officers then searched for the father and eventually located him around the eighth station, significantly higher on the mountain.<\/strong> He was told to return to the sixth station, where police handed the child back to him. Police reportedly gave the father a severe verbal warning.<\/p>\n<p><strong>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/news.tv-asahi.co.jp\/news_society\/articles\/000527902.html\">Japanese television<\/a> coverage, officers told him that leaving a child in such circumstances could potentially constitute conduct covered by criminal law and emphasized that<\/strong> <strong>a mountain hut is not a daycare center<\/strong>. The father reportedly apologized and acknowledged that his decision had been careless.\u00a0Police also reminded hikers that groups should travel at the pace of their least physically capable member and should not separate from one another.<\/p>\n<p><strong>At 12,389 feet (3,776 meters), Mount Fuji is Japan\u2019s highest mountain and an active volcano.<\/strong> Its enormous popularity can sometimes obscure the fact that reaching the summit remains a serious high-altitude mountain outing. The 2026 climbing season runs through September 10, with the various trails opening between July 1 and July 10. Climbers are required to pay a \u00a54,000 ($27) hiking fee, while restrictions have been introduced in recent years to address overcrowding and dangerous climbing practices.\u00a0On the Yoshida Trail, the most popular route, the entrance gate closes between 2 p.m. and 3 a.m. for climbers who do not have mountain-hut reservations, and daily access is capped at 4,000 people.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The three routes on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pref.shizuoka.jp\/kankosports\/kanko\/mtfuji\/1002809\/1072062.html\">Shizuoka<\/a> side \u2014 including the Fujinomiya Trail where this incident occurred \u2014 also require a \u00a54,000 hiking fee and prohibit climbers from entering between 2 p.m. and 3 a.m. unless they have a mountain-hut reservation.<\/strong> Unlike the Yoshida Trail, however, Shizuoka has not imposed a daily numerical cap on climbers. The regulations reflect a growing effort to treat Fuji less like a tourist attraction and more like the serious mountain it is.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The incident comes during a summer in which Mount Fuji has already seen multiple fatalities. <\/strong>Bernhard Sutter, a 58-year-old Swiss executive, died in July after collapsing while climbing the Fujinomiya Trail with his son. He became unconscious at roughly 9,875 feet (3,010 meters) and later died after being transported to a hospital.\u00a0He was the second person to die on Fuji after the 2026 climbing season began.\u00a0By August 7, three people had reportedly died on the mountain since the season opened, according to an August 11 <a href=\"https:\/\/smart.asahi.com\/v\/article\/ASV875QY5V87ULLI00TM.php\"><em>Asahi Shimbun<\/em><\/a> report.
