Across Haute-Savoie and the \u00c9crins massif, French authorities have issued a wave of new restrictions on bivouacking, wild swimming, and camper van parking in 2026, citing a familiar pair of justifications: overtourism and environmental damage. The measures range from expanded no-camping zones to new reservation systems to outright bans on swimming in alpine lakes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>On June 4, 2026, the Prefect of Haute-Savoie signed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.haute-savoie.gouv.fr\/Actions-de-l-Etat\/Vos-loisirs\/Montagne-en-ete\/RNN-Contamines-Montjoie-Aiguilles-Rouges-Carlaveyron-et-Vallon-de-Berard-reglementation\">Arr\u00eat\u00e9 n\u00b0 DDT-2026-0474<\/a>, overhauling how bivouacking, swimming, and boating are regulated across the entire R\u00e9serve Naturelle Nationale des Contamines-Montjoie, near Saint-Gervais and the Mont Blanc massif. <\/strong>The order didn\u2019t come out of nowhere. A narrower version had already been tested for two summers: since June 2025, bivouacking had been restricted specifically around the Jovet and Plan Jovet lakes, and the prefecture explicitly credits \u201cpositive results\u201d from that pilot for the decision to expand it reservewide. According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mon-sejour-en-montagne.com\/actualites\/haute-savoie-bivouac-et-baignade-davantage-encadres-aux-aiguilles-rouges\/\">Mon S\u00e9jour en Montagne<\/a>, the extension responds specifically to a documented pattern of visitors shifting their trips into June and September to avoid the previously restricted peak window, effectively erasing the \u201cquiet periods\u201d wildlife depended on outside high season.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bivouacking remains allowed from 7 p.m. to 9 a.m. by reservation in four designated sectors.<\/strong> Swimming, paddleboarding, and boating remain banned year-round at two specific lakes that have become social-media magnets: Lac Blanc and the Lacs des Ch\u00e9serys. He called it \u201cunprecedented\u201d attendance, and the image went viral. Park monitoring data backed up the anecdote: tent counts at several reference sites had doubled between 2021 and 2025.<\/p>\n<p><strong>After a public consultation that drew 686 submissions, the park signed a new arr\u00eat\u00e9 on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecrins-parcnational.fr\/actualite\/reglementation-bivouac-evolue\">June 16, 2026<\/a>. The town opened a dedicated 49-space camper van lot at Cry, at the valley\u2019s entrance, back in April 2026 as the accompanying alternative.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Unlike the nature reserve orders, this one isn\u2019t framed around wildlife or habitat protection.<\/strong> It\u2019s about crowding, noise, and vehicles turning public parking into makeshift campsites, an overtourism story more than a conservation one, even if the two are clearly related in the bigger picture.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Worth understanding for context: wild camping isn\u2019t illegal by default in France.<\/strong> Under <a href=\"https:\/\/rural-camping.com\/france\/wild-camping.htm\">Article R111-33<\/a> of French planning law, it\u2019s generally permitted with landowner consent, subject to blanket restrictions near coastlines, listed historic monuments, and officially protected natural sites. Nature reserves and national parks, however, are explicitly empowered to set their own stricter local rules, which is exactly the mechanism behind every order described above.
