West<\/a> was born to make headlines. When her parents, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/kim-kardashian\">Kim Kardashian<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/kanye-west\">Ye<\/a> (FKA Kanye West), revealed her name six days after <\/span><span>she arrived in the world, it became an instant cultural talking point. For days in the summer of 2013, everyone on the internet seemed to have an opinion: whether it was inspired or ridiculous, whether it was even a name at all. Thirteen years later, she is still sparking conversation <\/span><span>whatever she does.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>From attending the Met Gala while she was still in the womb to stealing the show at Paris Fashion Week at just six years old with the <\/span><span>now-iconic line \u201cWhat are thoooose? These are clothes!\u201d, North has spent almost her entire life in the spotlight. A couple of years ago, <\/span><span>she said she wanted to be a basketball player. That\u2019s now a firm no. Instead, she\u2019s gone full rock star, dropping her debut EP, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/music\/article\/70183\/1\/north-west-n0rth4evr-ep-ranked-kanye-debut-track-ranking-review-2026\">N0rth4evr<\/a>, at just 12 years old, and making a surprise appearance on stage with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/music\/article\/70629\/1\/meet-molly-santana-the-emo-princess-underground-rap-north-west\">Molly Santana<\/a> in May. As she raps herself on \u201cW0ah\u201d, North was \u201csignin\u2019 <\/span><span>autographs in elementary\u201d; it\u2019s almost impossible to grasp how unique her version of childhood has been.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Released in May, <\/span><em><span>N0rth4evr<\/span><\/em><span> is a six-track mosh pit of rage rap, emo, hyperpop, alt rock and metal, sampling everything from Meg <\/span><span>&amp; Dia\u2019s \u201cMonster\u201d to Kikuo\u2019s \u201cLove Me, Love Me, Love Me\u201d. Maximalist production, buzzing synthesisers and jolts of electric guitar run through <\/span><span>the record, while her signature Japanese tag, \u201c \u30ce\u30fc\u30b9\u3061\u3083\u3093 (North-chan)\u201d, announces one thumping club beat after another. Track titles <\/span><span>like \u201cH0w Sh0uld ! f33l\u201d, \u201cD!e\u201d and \u201cTh!s t!m3\u201d tap into a specific strain of internet nostalgia, reading like relics from a long-gone Myspace bio <\/span><span>and matching the intensity of a teenager deep in her feels. We\u2019d crossed paths a few weeks earlier at the Vetements show in Paris, but the security bubble around her barely allowed for an introduction, let alone a conversation. At 4pm the studio\u2019s garage door lifts and Kim\u2019s Range Rover rolls in, with \u201cDon\u2019t read this and drive\u201d written across its monoblock wheels. North gets out with a quick wave and sweeps into a side room in a Miku bathrobe for some final touch-ups, while Kim looks effortlessly on-the-go in grey sweats and a massive blinged-out Balenciaga bag. She stays with North throughout the shoot, present and protective.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>North\u2019s dressing room is packed to the max; full of big hats, wild sunglasses, neon grills and every imaginable spike, it\u2019s a Tumblr-esque <\/span><span>dream brought to life. At just 13, she has a look that is unmistakably her own: those blue twin tails, a mix of real and fake piercings and Rick <\/span><span>Owens Geobaskets. But North has already made her case to her mum. \u201cEveryone\u2019s in love with boys, vaping and doing all kinds of bad stuff,\u201d <\/span><span>she says. \u201cAll I want is blue hair and piercings.\u201d We wait as this hair \u2013 which is inspired by the Japanese virtual pop idol Hatsune Miku, and has fast become her signature \u2013 is perfected.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/gus-van-sant\">Gus Van Sant<\/a>, the legendary auteur behind such films as <\/span><em><span>My Own Private Idaho<\/span><\/em><span> and <\/span><em><span>Good Will Hunting<\/span><\/em><span>, and our photographer for today, <\/span><span>sits patiently, browsing a run of Kim\u2019s own covers, precisely placed on a custom Rick Owens monolith.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>When North finally steps on set in her first look, she has just one request: Babyxsosa on the speakers. She is clearly shy, but at the same <\/span><span>time accustomed to being watched. Between takes, she cracks up with her mom, grills glistening as she laughs and her facial piercing stickers <\/span><span>catching the light. She is, without question, the most self-assured 13-year-old I\u2019ve ever met. But North is also, it turns out, a pretty chill person to talk to once everything is right. <\/span><span>No filter, no handler jumping in, no answer that sounds coached \u2013 just North, deciding in real time what she does and doesn\u2019t feel like getting into. How did that feel?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span><strong>North West: <\/strong>It\u2019s cool to show that females can connect through their music \u2013 because it\u2019s always beef and stuff, and it\u2019s never like that <\/span><span>[with me]. I never wanna have beef with any girl, you know? Molly was the perfect person to do this with me because I\u2019m her <\/span><span>biggest fan for real. Last year at Summer Smash I was screaming at her set; it\u2019s so crazy. I never thought that day would come.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>You also made your first-ever solo music festival performance, at Summer Smash in June. How was that?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span><strong>North West: <\/strong>Yeah, I wish I\u2019d done it earlier, though. I\u2019ve been ready.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>How would you describe performing in three words?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span><strong>North West: <\/strong>Fun, relieving and exciting.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Do you have any pre-show rituals before you hit the stage?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span><strong>North West: <\/strong>I pray.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>What are you currently obsessed with?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span><strong>North West: <\/strong>Rehearsing every day. I used not to rehearse. I used to want to go <\/span><span>out there and just see what happens. But I like dance rehearsing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>How would you describe your ideal day?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span><strong>North West: <\/strong>I don\u2019t know\u2026 I don\u2019t like to rest a lot. I like to get stuff done. <\/span><span>So maybe just going to rehearsal, and then going to the studio; <\/span><span>that\u2019s a perfect day. Or having a big show would be the most <\/span><span>ideal day.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>What\u2019s the worst piece of advice you\u2019ve ever been given?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span><strong>North West: <\/strong>To start my career later. It\u2019s like, nah, this is my hobby, this is <\/span><span>what I like to do, this is what I wanna do with my life.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Who are some other female artists that you\u2019re into?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span><strong>North West: <\/strong>Bktherula. Baby Osama. Babyxsosa. I like all of them for real.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Where do you look for inspiration? Where do your references come <\/strong><strong>from?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span><strong>North West: <\/strong>Everybody I listen to. Everybody I like. But I watched that when I was younger. I don\u2019t r<\/span><span>eally watch a lot of anime now, or TV shows in general.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>As well as rapping, you also paint. Do you still do that? What\u2019s the l<\/strong><strong>ast thing you painted?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span><strong>North West: <\/strong>I haven\u2019t painted in a while, but I think it was a sunset. I was <\/span><span>really into painting sunsets. I paint for fun sometimes, but the <\/span><span>paint I use always gets on my hands\u2026 like oil paints. When her parents, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/kim-kardashian\">Kim Kardashian<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/kanye-west\">Ye<\/a> (FKA Kanye West), revealed her name six days after <\/span><span>she arrived in the world, it became an instant cultural talking point. For days in the summer of 2013, everyone on the internet seemed to have an opinion: whether it was inspired or ridiculous, whether it was even a name at all. Thirteen years later, she is still sparking conversation <\/span><span>whatever she does.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>From attending the Met Gala while she was still in the womb to stealing the show at Paris Fashion Week at just six years old with the <\/span><span>now-iconic line \u201cWhat are thoooose? These are clothes!\u201d, North has spent almost her entire life in the spotlight. A couple of years ago, <\/span><span>she said she wanted to be a basketball player. That\u2019s now a firm no. Instead, she\u2019s gone full rock star, dropping her debut EP, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/music\/article\/70183\/1\/north-west-n0rth4evr-ep-ranked-kanye-debut-track-ranking-review-2026\">N0rth4evr<\/a>, at just 12 years old, and making a surprise appearance on stage with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/music\/article\/70629\/1\/meet-molly-santana-the-emo-princess-underground-rap-north-west\">Molly Santana<\/a> in May. As she raps herself on \u201cW0ah\u201d, North was \u201csignin\u2019 <\/span><span>autographs in elementary\u201d; it\u2019s almost impossible to grasp how unique her version of childhood has been.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Released in May, <\/span><em><span>N0rth4evr<\/span><\/em><span> is a six-track mosh pit of rage rap, emo, hyperpop, alt rock and metal, sampling everything from Meg <\/span><span>&amp; Dia\u2019s \u201cMonster\u201d to Kikuo\u2019s \u201cLove Me, Love Me, Love Me\u201d. Maximalist production, buzzing synthesisers and jolts of electric guitar run through <\/span><span>the record, while her signature Japanese tag, \u201c \u30ce\u30fc\u30b9\u3061\u3083\u3093 (North-chan)\u201d, announces one thumping club beat after another. Track titles <\/span><span>like \u201cH0w Sh0uld ! f33l\u201d, \u201cD!e\u201d and \u201cTh!s t!m3\u201d tap into a specific strain of internet nostalgia, reading like relics from a long-gone Myspace bio <\/span><span>and matching the intensity of a teenager deep in her feels. We\u2019d crossed paths a few weeks earlier at the Vetements show in Paris, but the security bubble around her barely allowed for an introduction, let alone a conversation. At 4pm the studio\u2019s garage door lifts and Kim\u2019s Range Rover rolls in, with \u201cDon\u2019t read this and drive\u201d written across its monoblock wheels. North gets out with a quick wave and sweeps into a side room in a Miku bathrobe for some final touch-ups, while Kim looks effortlessly on-the-go in grey sweats and a massive blinged-out Balenciaga bag. She stays with North throughout the shoot, present and protective.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>North\u2019s dressing room is packed to the max; full of big hats, wild sunglasses, neon grills and every imaginable spike, it\u2019s a Tumblr-esque <\/span><span>dream brought to life. At just 13, she has a look that is unmistakably her own: those blue twin tails, a mix of real and fake piercings and Rick <\/span><span>Owens Geobaskets. But North has already made her case to her mum. \u201cEveryone\u2019s in love with boys, vaping and doing all kinds of bad stuff,\u201d <\/span><span>she says. \u201cAll I want is blue hair and piercings.\u201d We wait as this hair \u2013 which is inspired by the Japanese virtual pop idol Hatsune Miku, and has fast become her signature \u2013 is perfected.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/gus-van-sant\">Gus Van Sant<\/a>, the legendary auteur behind such films as <\/span><em><span>My Own Private Idaho<\/span><\/em><span> and <\/span><em><span>Good Will Hunting<\/span><\/em><span>, and our photographer for today, <\/span><span>sits patiently, browsing a run of Kim\u2019s own covers, precisely placed on a custom Rick Owens monolith.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>When North finally steps on set in her first look, she has just one request: Babyxsosa on the speakers. She is clearly shy, but at the same <\/span><span>time accustomed to being watched. Between takes, she cracks up with her mom, grills glistening as she laughs and her facial piercing stickers <\/span><span>catching the light. She is, without question, the most self-assured 13-year-old I\u2019ve ever met. But North is also, it turns out, a pretty chill person to talk to once everything is right. <\/span><span>No filter, no handler jumping in, no answer that sounds coached \u2013 just North, deciding in real time what she does and doesn\u2019t feel like getting into. How did that feel?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span><strong>North West: <\/strong>It\u2019s cool to show that females can connect through their music \u2013 because it\u2019s always beef and stuff, and it\u2019s never like that <\/span><span>[with me]. I never wanna have beef with any girl, you know? Molly was the perfect person to do this with me because I\u2019m her <\/span><span>biggest fan for real. Last year at Summer Smash I was screaming at her set; it\u2019s so crazy. I never thought that day would come.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>You also made your first-ever solo music festival performance, at Summer Smash in June. How was that?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span><strong>North West: <\/strong>Yeah, I wish I\u2019d done it earlier, though. I\u2019ve been ready.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>How would you describe performing in three words?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span><strong>North West: <\/strong>Fun, relieving and exciting.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Do you have any pre-show rituals before you hit the stage?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span><strong>North West: <\/strong>I pray.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>What are you currently obsessed with?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span><strong>North West: <\/strong>Rehearsing every day. I used not to rehearse. I used to want to go <\/span><span>out there and just see what happens. But I like dance rehearsing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>How would you describe your ideal day?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span><strong>North West: <\/strong>I don\u2019t know\u2026 I don\u2019t like to rest a lot. I like to get stuff done. <\/span><span>So maybe just going to rehearsal, and then going to the studio; <\/span><span>that\u2019s a perfect day. Or having a big show would be the most <\/span><span>ideal day.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>What\u2019s the worst piece of advice you\u2019ve ever been given?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span><strong>North West: <\/strong>To start my career later. It\u2019s like, nah, this is my hobby, this is <\/span><span>what I like to do, this is what I wanna do with my life.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Who are some other female artists that you\u2019re into?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span><strong>North West: <\/strong>Bktherula. Baby Osama. Babyxsosa. I like all of them for real.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Where do you look for inspiration? Where do your references come <\/strong><strong>from?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span><strong>North West: <\/strong>Everybody I listen to. Everybody I like. I take little bits of their <\/span><span>swag and just make my own swag out of it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>When was the last time you were starstruck?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span><strong>North West: <\/strong>Lil Uzi\u2019s Summer Smash set. It\u2019s just easy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>If you could swap wardrobes with anyone either living or dead, real <\/strong><strong>or fictional, who would it be?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span><strong>North West: <\/strong>Honestly, I like my closet the best.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>What is your most-used app?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span><strong>North West: <\/strong>I be using TikTok and Pinterest. I like to make moodboards for <\/span><span>my nails and my hair. But also I just be making it up; I gotta draw <\/span><span>it too, \u2019cause there\u2019s nothing on Pinterest. I can\u2019t find what I really <\/span><span>want for real.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>What\u2019s your favourite anime?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span><strong>North West: <\/strong><em>Demon Slayer<\/em>. But I watched that when I was younger. I don\u2019t r<\/span><span>eally watch a lot of anime now, or TV shows in general.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>As well as rapping, you also paint. Do you still do that? What\u2019s the l<\/strong><strong>ast thing you painted?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span><strong>North West: <\/strong>I haven\u2019t painted in a while, but I think it was a sunset. I was <\/span><span>really into painting sunsets. I paint for fun sometimes, but the <\/span><span>paint I use always gets on my hands\u2026 like oil paints. So it\u2019s not <\/span><span>easy to take off.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>If you weren\u2019t an artist, what do you think you would be?<\/strong><strong>I know you <\/strong><strong>wanted to be a basketball player at one point.\u00a0 Is that still on the cards?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span><strong>North West: <\/strong>No, it\u2019s not. What would I be? I still wanna work. I wanna work <\/span><span>at, like, Starbucks next year. I think I can next year \u2019cause I\u2019m <\/span><span>gonna be 14, so\u2026 I think I can.
