Then \u201cSpend Dat\u201d upended her plans. The infectious, pro-scammer anthem that she \u201calways knew\u201d would be a hit soundtracked the season, making its way from the New York Knicks\u2019 locker room, where the song blared in a post-NBA Finals celebration captured on social media, to the <em>Billboard<\/em> charts, topping Rap Airplay for five weeks across July and August. Now, the MC from Opa-locka, Fla. \u2014 part of greater Miami \u2014 has her sights set on owning the fall, too.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe rapper born Caresha Brownlee, 32, will soon unveil that as-yet-untitled solo album, nine years after she and JT first burst onto the scene as City Girls. (City Girls split in 2024 after a seven-year run, while both rappers remain supportive of each other\u2019s solo careers.) Yung Miami launched her solo career the year after JT\u2019s release with \u201cRap Freaks,\u201d which reached No.\u00a081 on the Billboard Hot\u00a0100. That buzzy track, which adapted The Notorious B.I.G.\u2019s \u201cJust Playing (Dreams)\u201d from a woman\u2019s perspective, laid the foundation for the pair of songs that, half a decade later, would formally introduce her solo era: \u201cTea Time\u201d and \u201cNews Flash,\u201d both of which arrived this February.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tNeither earned a fraction of the commercial success \u201cSpend Dat\u201d has accrued, but they both helped Yung Miami reprogram listeners who, as she tells it, called her \u201cthe outcast\u201d of City Girls and claimed that she \u201ccouldn\u2019t rap\u201d \u2014 allegations she never let get to her. \u201cI\u2019m the first successful person that came out of our family; I do this for my kids and my mom and my brothers and sisters,\u201d she says. \u201cI\u2019m focusing on the people who want to see me win, because at the end of the day, it ain\u2019t gon\u2019 stop. I\u2019m not going away.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tShe calls \u201cNews Flash\u201d a reintroduction, while \u201cTea Time\u201d was meant to start the conversation and get a viral moment. \u201cIt was a cultural reset to show that I have influence. I had everybody clocking their fingers!\u201d And then came \u201cSpend Dat,\u201d which dropped in April and earned Yung Miami coveted cosigns from New York rap icons Fat Joe and Jadakiss, the latter of whom hailed the song as a \u201chit off rip.\u201d Thanks to its singalong hook, along with nuanced social media discourse concerning the lyrical depiction of the fast life in Miami and recent viral moments (like with the Knicks), \u201cSpend Dat\u201d has reached No.\u00a017 on the Hot\u00a0100, her highest entry on the chart \u2014 including her City Girls hits. According to Luminate, the single has earned over 83.8\u00a0million official on-\u00addemand U.S. streams through July\u00a030.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe positive reception to \u201cSpend Dat\u201d didn\u2019t just inspire Yung Miami to trust her intuition \u2014 she insisted it become her album\u2019s lead single \u2014 it also pushed her to get back in the studio and reshape the project around a burgeoning, hometown-\u00adhonoring narrative. \u201cI wanted to go back to my roots and what inspires me about being from Miami; the culture and the music and the environment shaped me to be who I am today,\u201d she says. \u201cThis album is about everything I\u2019ve been through and pulling myself out of survival mode to get back to a space to create. I\u2019m definitely going there, but also having fun. I surprise myself whenever I listen to it; I cry, I dance, I\u2019m actually gagging myself. I really created an album! Meanwhile, \u201cPut Me Together\u201d and \u201cF\u2013k You\u201d (the latter was the final addition to the album) remain the two tracks she\u2019s most excited to share. \u201cI\u2019m the most humble person ever,\u201d she says. \u201cBut sometimes you need to feel yourself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tWith her debut solo album arriving later this year on the recently resurrected Uptown Records, Yung Miami hopes to tap into the label\u2019s storied legacy to display her own maturation. Part of that is being transparent with her process; eagle-eyed fans will remember her teasing a debut project titled Yams two years ago, but she\u2019s the first to admit that it \u201cjust felt so lazy and wasn\u2019t creative enough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cWhen the City Girls first came on the scene, I was so young and new to the industry,\u201d she reflects. \u201cI didn\u2019t understand it and didn\u2019t care. I\u2019m a little wiser now, and I\u2019ve experienced a lot of things since I was in a group, and with time comes growth. I\u2019m in a different headspace and the music reflects that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tHaving signed with WME for global representation in July, Yung Miami is hoping for a U.K. promotional run \u2014 and is even manifesting a solo tour after some festivals.
