The New Zealand snow forecast turns active across the South Island from Wednesday through Friday, led by 78-118 cm<\/strong><\/span> at \u014chau while Mount Ruapehu receives little more than a dusting.<\/strong> Snow begins dense and relatively high Tuesday night, becomes colder and better quality through Thursday, then tapers Friday. Confidence is strongest from Monday afternoon, August 24, through Friday night, August 28, because the models agree on the storm\u2019s timing but retain meaningful spread in intensity, snow levels, and exposed-ridge wind.<\/p>\n

Monday is mostly a reset day, with Tuesday bringing initial wind and high-density snow to Otago before the main band organizes overnight.<\/strong> The models converge on snow spreading through the southern and central fields Wednesday, then reaching Canterbury Wednesday night, but diverge significantly on output. Initial snow-to-liquid ratios run near 4-7:1 with snow levels around 1,500-1,700 meters, favoring dense snow on lower slopes. By Thursday, ratios improve toward 8-11:1 as snow levels generally fall to 600-1,000 meters. The models also disagree on peak gusts, from a relatively calm storm core to exposed gusts near 100 km\/h, so brief lift holds remain possible.<\/p>\n

The deepest totals through Friday night favor \u014chau at 78-118 cm<\/strong><\/span>, followed by Mount Dobson at 51-78 cm<\/strong><\/span>, Treble Cone at 48-72 cm<\/strong><\/span>, The Remarkables at 45-66 cm<\/strong><\/span>, and Cardrona at 43-64 cm<\/strong><\/span>.<\/strong> Coronet Peak should receive 31-46 cm<\/strong><\/span>, while Mt. Hutt and Porters land between 22-43 cm<\/strong><\/span>. Mount Ruapehu stays near 0-3 cm<\/strong><\/span>. \u014chau and Mount Dobson are closed Monday because of wind, Porters and Whakapapa have partial operations, and T\u016broa\u2019s Monday status is unclear, making reopening and lift holds important to actual powder access.<\/p>\n

A weaker reload may brush the mountains from Saturday into Monday, with a conservative 1-10 cm<\/strong><\/span> possible where showers persist.<\/strong> The models diverge on its timing, intensity, snow levels, and wind impacts, so it is not part of the detailed totals period. A stronger signal then appears from Tuesday night into Thursday, September 3, with roughly 10-30 cm<\/strong><\/span> possible across much of the South Island and 5-25 cm<\/strong><\/span> possible on Mount Ruapehu. Agreement is weaker on that later system: one drier solution nearly misses the South Island, snow levels vary sharply, and some wetter outcomes become windy enough for significant lift disruption.<\/p>\n
