At least 30 people have died after a landfill collapsed in Guinea’s<\/a> capital, Conakry, officials said on Sunday.<\/p>\n

Heavy rains overnight caused a large mound of rubbish to collapse at the Dar Es Salam landfill, burying nearby homes before dawn.<\/p>\n

At least six other people\u00a0were seriously injured.<\/p>\n

Guinea’s minister for territorial administration, Djenabou Toure, visited\u00a0the site workers used excavators to search for more bodies.<\/span><\/p>\n

Landfill was slated for closure<\/h2>\n

The government had recently ordered the expulsion of nearby residents in informal housing\u00a0due to a fear of collapses<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Lt. Col. Balde Mamadou Bailo, the sanitation officer for the Military Engineering Battalion, said the Dar Es Salam site had been slated for closure on Sunday.<\/p>\n

Heavy seasonal rains have been known to trigger collapses at landfills in some countries, with Uganda<\/a> and Ethiopia<\/a> suffering similar tragedies in recent years.\u00a0<\/p>\n
