Organizers of the 2026 Sydney Marathon are making the best of the situation after minting tens of thousands of medals\u00a0engraved with depictions of\u00a0landmarks from the eastern Australian<\/a> city along with one that doesn’t belong \u2014 the Allianz Arena in Munich<\/a>, Germany.<\/p>\n

The medal should have instead shown the Allianz Stadium in Sydney, which is one of the sights that\u00a0participants in the upcoming race will pass while running\u00a0the\u00a0the 42.2-kilometer\u00a0(26.2-mile) course.<\/p>\n

More than 40,000 participants are expected to\u00a0earn the medal as a “badge of honor” for completing the race on August 30.<\/p>\n

What have organizers said about the medal mix-up?<\/h2>\n

“A little too much international flavor has found its way onto the back of the finishers medal, with an incorrect depiction of the stadium,” a Sydney Marathon spokesperson said.<\/p>\n

“We’re not going to run from it, it was an unfortunate error;\u00a0though it’s certainly given everyone somehing to talk about this weekend, mostly in good humor,” the spokesperson said.<\/p>\n

“With the event a week away, this is the medal our finishers will receive.”<\/p>\n

“Behind every one of these medals is months of early mornings, long runs and quiet determination, and having it placed around your neck at the Sydney Opera House is a moment our participants will never forget,” the spokesperson added.<\/p>\n

“It’s a beautiful medal, and now a little more unique.”<\/p>\n

Good-humored reaction from Munich<\/h2>\n

Munich’s Allianz Arena has responded in light-hearted manner.<\/p>\n

“Oh wow, we didn’t have that on our bingo card!” it posted on Instagram.<\/p>\n

“Perhaps they tried to find something else they had in common: Allianz Arena \u2014 Sydney Opera \u2014\u00a0Unique Architecture \u2014\u00a0Both are worth a visit!”<\/p>\n

The daily\u00a0Sydney Morning Herald\u00a0<\/em>also came up with a gleefully teasing headline:\u00a0“The medal that will put Sydney on the map. The wrong map.”\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

The other side of the medal shows\u00a0shows a gold-and-indigo pattern\u00a0by First Nations artist Ambrose Killian that has been\u00a0widely commended.<\/p>\n
