Julian Alaphilippe will not race again.<\/p>\n
The two-time world champion and Tour de France star confirmed Friday night that he\u2019s retired with immediate effect.<\/p>\n
The official announcement Friday comes hot off the back of reports Thursday by Wielerflits<\/em> and L\u2019Equipe<\/em> that the French great was poised to hang up his wheels.<\/p>\n \u201cI gave everything I had, and cycling gave me everything in return,\u201d Alaphilippe said in a statement via his former team, Tudor Pro Cycling.<\/p>\n \u201cThat\u2019s why I can say it with a smile: I\u2019m stopping. Not with sadness, but with immense gratitude. To all the fans who carried me up every climb: thank you. Thank you for everything.\u201d<\/p>\n Alaphilippe had a contract running through 2027 with Tudor and was scheduled to race the Canadian GPs next month.<\/p>\n However, he clearly decided now was the time.<\/p>\n According to reports Thursday from L\u2019Equipe<\/em>, the recent Tour de France had been the final straw for a rider who was left behind by a sport he was struggling to identify with.<\/p>\n Alaphilippe himself had hinted the writing was on the wall when he reflected on his fruitless Tour last month.<\/p>\n \u201cNothing is official, but don\u2019t expect to see me again,\u201d he said after stage 20 to Alpe d\u2019Huez.<\/p>\n The 34-year-old opened up further in a statement sent by Tudor Pro Cycling on Friday night. He knew 2026 would be the end. It was only a matter of deciding when to pull the rip-cord.<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s the right time [to retire],\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019ve always raced on instinct, attacking when my legs were burning, not when the numbers told me to.<\/p>\n \u201cI made this decision in the same way. I woke up one morning at a training camp and I felt it \u2013 this is my final year,\u201d he said. \u201cWithout sadness.\u201d<\/p>\n The peloton loses one of its recent greats with Alaphilippe\u2019s retirement.<\/p>\n He won two world titles (2020 and 2021), Milan-San Remo, Strade Bianche, six Tour de France stages, and three-peated at La Fl\u00e8che Wallonne.<\/p>\n He rocked the 2019 Tour de France with 14 days in the yellow jersey and somehow hung on for fifth overall.<\/p>\n In Alaphilippe\u2019s peak years riding with Quick-Step at the turn of the decade, Lou Lou<\/em> was one of the most exciting riders in the sport.<\/p>\n The passion-fueled puncheur blazed to 31 of his 45 career victories in the four years from 2018-2021. He could bang bars with Wout van Aert and Mathieu van der Poel at the Tour of Flanders and hang tough with Egan Bernal at the Tour de France.<\/p>\n However, his form \u2014 and his results \u2014 have been tracking south for several seasons.<\/p>\n He and Marc Hirschi joined Tudor Pro Cycling in 2025 as a leadership tandem loaded with potential. They both faltered at the budding Swiss team.<\/p>\n Alaphilippe brought Tudor one victory, at the GP Qu\u00e9bec in 2025, and achieved little else, no matter how hard he tried.<\/p>\n L\u2019Equipe<\/em> suggested Thursday the peloton\u2019s king of panache had been losing his love for \u2013 and his ability to compete in \u2013 a sport he could no longer identify with.<\/p>\n As a rider driven by instinct and savvy, Alaphilippe was left behind by a peloton that rides on watts, nutrition apps, and endless altitude camps.<\/p>\n \u201cThe pace is faster, and the young riders are robotic,\u201d Alaphilippe said last autumn after he won in Qu\u00e9bec. \u201cEverything is more meticulously planned and calculated. For them, it\u2019s normal. Even though I\u2019m very professional, I don\u2019t aspire to that.<\/p>\n \u201cI need that freedom, that joy of living,\u201d he said. \u201cThat pleasure, above all!\u201d<\/p>\n It seems sadly fitting that Alaphilippe\u2019s last rolls of the dice were two thwarted breakaway attacks at Le Tour<\/em>.<\/p>\n \u201cI raced with my heart on my sleeve, with the mistakes that come with it,\u201d Alaphilippe said Friday. \u201cI\u2019d rather lose 10 times while attacking than win once because the team car dictated how I should race.\u201d<\/p>\n Meanwhile, Tudor Pro Cycling has been building for the future.<\/p>\n The Swiss team handed Arnaud De Lie a long-term contract and extended the deals of veterans Matteo Trentin and Marco Haller. The squad also recently pinned down 23-year-old Marco Brenner through 2030 after the German talent won the Tour de Pologne.<\/p>\n Meanwhile, Alaphilippe ended his exit interview by calling for quiet.<\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019m going to stop talking for a while too. I won\u2019t give any more interviews and I won\u2019t answer any further questions about this decision,\u201d he said. \u201cI need some peace and quiet, and more than anything, time with my family. That\u2019s where I want to be now.
