Alaphilippe\u2019s deteriorating form was plain to see in the pinnacle race of a sport that evolved without him.<\/p>\n<p>Alaphilippe had hinted the writing was on the wall when he reflected on his fruitless Tour de France last month.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNothing is official, but don\u2019t expect to see me again,\u201d Alaphilippe said on stage 20 of <em>Le Tour<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor the past few years, I\u2019ve felt I\u2019m nearing the end,\u201d he said. \u201cIn cycling, I\u2019m not getting any younger. But in life, 34 is still young.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad-placeholder-wrapper relative w-full border-t border-b border-border-light col-span-full my-3 md:col-span-10 md:col-start-2\">\n<div class=\"mb-[30px] min-h-[30px] text-center\"><span class=\"font-utility-4 font-medium tracking-[1px] text-neutral-500 uppercase\">ADVERTISEMENT<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>It seems like nothing has changed for Alaphilippe in the weeks since the Tour.<\/p>\n<p><em>L\u2019Equipe<\/em> reported Thursday that he has terminated his ongoing contract with Tudor Pro Cycling.<\/p>\n<p>Neither Alaphilippe nor the team has confirmed that the rider has quit. <em>Velo<\/em> has reached out to the team for comment.<\/p>\n<h2>Ala-panache loses love for a data-driven sport<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1003363\" class=\"pom-image-wrap photo-alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1003363\" src=\"https:\/\/velo-cdn.outsideonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/GettyImages-2222632320.jpg?width=2048&amp;auto=webp&amp;quality=75&amp;fit=cover\"><figcaption class=\"pom-caption\"><span class=\"article__caption\">Alaphilippe is reported to have fallen out of love with the sport.<\/span> (Photo: SAMEER AL-DOUMY\/AFP via Getty Images)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><em>L\u2019Equipe<\/em> suggested Thursday the peloton\u2019s king of panache lost his love for a sport he could no longer identify with.<\/p>\n<p>Should the reports be true, the peloton has lost one of its recent greats.<\/p>\n<p>Alaphilippe won two world titles (2020 and 2021), Milan-San Remo, Strade Bianche, six Tour de France stages, and three-peated at La Fl\u00e8che Wallonne.<\/p>\n<p>He rocked the 2019 Tour de France with 14 days in the yellow jersey and somehow hung on for fifth overall.<\/p>\n<p>In his peak years riding with Quick-Step at the turn of the decade, <em>Lu Lu<\/em> was one of the most exciting riders in the sport.<\/p>\n<p>The passion-fueled puncheur blazed to 31 of his 45 career victories in the four years from 2018-2021. He could bang bars with Wout van Aert and Mathieu van der Poel at the Tour of Flanders and hang tough with Egan Bernal at the Tour de France.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad-placeholder-wrapper relative w-full border-t border-b border-border-light col-span-full my-3 md:col-span-10 md:col-start-2\">\n<div class=\"mb-[30px] min-h-[30px] text-center\"><span class=\"font-utility-4 font-medium tracking-[1px] text-neutral-500 uppercase\">ADVERTISEMENT<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>However, his form \u2014 and his results \u2014 have been tracking south for several seasons.<\/p>\n<p>He and Marc Hirschi joined Tudor Pro Cycling in 2025 as a leadership tandem loaded with potential. They both faltered at the budding Swiss team.<\/p>\n<p>Alaphilippe brought Tudor one victory, at the GP Qu\u00e9bec in 2025, and achieved little else, no matter how hard he tried.<\/p>\n<p>A rider driven on instinct and savvy was left behind by a peloton that rides on watts, nutrition apps, and endless altitude camps.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe pace is faster, and the young riders are robotic,\u201d Alaphilippe said last autumn after he won in Qu\u00e9bec. \u201cEverything is more meticulously planned and calculated. For them, it\u2019s normal. Even though I\u2019m very professional, I don\u2019t aspire to that.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI need that freedom, that joy of living,\u201d he said. \u201cThat pleasure, above all!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It seems sadly fitting that Alaphilippe\u2019s last rolls of the dice might have been two thwarted breakaway attacks at <em>Le Tour<\/em>.<\/p>\n<h2>Tudor building for the future, Alaphilippe or not<\/h2>\n<p>Meanwhile, Tudor Pro Cycling has been building for the future.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad-placeholder-wrapper relative w-full border-t border-b border-border-light col-span-full my-3 md:col-span-10 md:col-start-2\">\n<div class=\"mb-[30px] min-h-[30px] text-center\"><span class=\"font-utility-4 font-medium tracking-[1px] text-neutral-500 uppercase\">ADVERTISEMENT<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The Swiss team handed a long-term contract to Arnaud De Lie and extended its deals with veterans Matteo Trentin and Marco Haller.
