\n\tDrake continues to rule streaming. After being crowned\u00a0Spotify\u2019s most-streamed artist in\u00a0Canada last year, the streaming service has released its Global Impact List for the first half of 2026, revealing the 50 most-played songs by Canadian artists outside of their home country. To no one\u2019s surprise, the Toronto rapper has 40 of the 50 spots, including the top 12.<\/p>\n

\n\tThanks to the rapper\u2019s historic\u00a0Iceman<\/em>\u00a0release \u2014 which included a triple-album drop with Maid of Honour and Habibti \u2014 Drake commands a whopping 80% of the list, led by his chart-topping hit, \u201cJanice SFTU,\u201d which the streaming platform already tapped as one of its\u00a0song-of-the-summer contenders. It\u2019s followed by \u201cNational Treasures,\u201d \u201cShabang,\u201d \u201cWhisper My Name\u201d and \u201cRan To Atlanta,\u201d featuring Future and Molly Santana, to round out the top 5. He wraps up the list, too, with \u201cRust Intro\u201d at No. 50.<\/p>\n

    \n\tCameron Whitcomb is the highest-ranking act after Drake, landing at No. 13 with his viral track \u201cKingdom of Fear,\u201d another track that the streaming service listed as a song-of-the-summer contender. It has become a big moment for the B.C. artist, securing his\u00a0first top 3 hit on the Billboard Canadian Hot 100\u00a0chart dated Aug. 22. Whitcomb earns a second entry on the Spotify list at No. 49 with \u201cYou and Me.\u201d<\/p>\n

    \n\tIn recent years, the growing influence of Punjabi-Canadian artists on the world stage has become a major force. While\u00a0the second half of 2025\u2019s list featured multiple tracks by Karan Aujla and Ikky, they\u2019re passing the torch to\u00a0Shubh, who claims two entries on the 2026 list. He arrives at No. 23 with \u201cMoves\u201d and \u201cBounce\u201d at No. 35. It\u2019s a welcome return for the Punjabi-Canadian act, who was on Spotify\u2019s\u00a0first-ever Global Impact List in 2025.\u00a0<\/p>\n

    \n\tViral act\u00a0bbno$\u00a0lands at No. 41 with \u201cdiamonds are forever.\u201d It\u2019s been a year of transformation for the Vancouver-based artist, born Alex Gumuchian, who has found success with his independent project over the past couple of years.<\/p>\n

    \n\tAt No. 43, viral Quebec duo Angine de Poitrine makes their first and only appearance on the list with \u201cFabienk,\u201d arguably the group\u2019s biggest hit\u00a0from their album,\u00a0Vol. II<\/em>. The buzzy math rock group has made a\u00a0global breakthrough\u00a0with their polka-dot ensembles and unique sound.<\/p>\n

    \n\tRounding out the list is what Spotify calls \u201ca diverse cross-section of Canadian talent,\u201d including: Toronto indie-rockers Good Kid with \u201cCicada\u201d (No. 29), producer Murda Beatz\u2019s Prospa-featuring track \u201cBaby\u201d (No. 33), Korean-Canadian rapper OXYNOVA\u2019s \u201cSSSAK\u201d (No. 34) and Vancouver-based producer Asad Khan\u2019s remix \u201cPiya Ghar Aaya\u201d (No. 39).<\/p>\n

    \n\t\tMontreal\u2019s LASSO Festival Grows Rapidly Alongside Canada\u2019s Country Music Scene\t<\/h2>\n

    \n\tIt\u2019s not every day that Montreal\u2019s public transit is filled with cowboy hats, Canadian tuxedos and Western belt buckles. Now, that\u2019s a yearly mid-August tradition for country music lovers as LASSO celebrates its fifth edition.<\/p>\n

    \n\tThe large-scale country music festival, co-produced by Evenko and Live Nation, welcomed over 43,000 fans this year on August 15 and 16. The lineup featured headliners Thomas Rhett and Mumford & Sons, along with established country acts like Carly Pearce, The Band Perry, Old Dominion and Jon Pardi and rising Canadian stars like Cameron Whitcomb, Morgan Griffiths and Noah Brigden.<\/p>\n

      Nick Farkas<\/strong>, Evenko\u2019s senior vice-president of booking, concerts and events, says it\u2019s a rapidly growing success story that has grown faster than other major festivals like Osheaga (which he\u00a0co-founded).<\/p>\n

      \n\t\u201cFive years in, where this festival is at, for me, is just fantastic,\u201d Farkas says. \u201cWe were not this far along on any festival we\u2019ve ever done. It\u2019s a ton of fun to work on it.\u201d<\/p>\n

      \n\tThe festival\u2019s growth fits into a bigger trend of country music throughout the music landscape. Recently, the genre has surpassed hip-hop and pop as the most successful genre at the top of the charts.<\/p>\n

      \n\tThis week, the Billboard Canadian Hot 100 features a rare sweep of country songs comprising the top four slots, with Ella Langley\u2019s \u201cChoosin\u2019 Texas\u201d at No. 1, Stella Lefty\u2019s \u201cBoston\u201d at No. 2, Cameron Whitcomb\u2019s \u201cKingdom of Fear\u201d at No. 3 and Morgan Wallen\u2019s \u201cBeen By Now\u201d at No. 4.<\/p>\n

      \n\tThat potential was first bubbling when LASSO began five years ago, but it was unforeseen in Canada just five years before that.<\/p>\n

      \n\t\u201cWe had one arena country show every few years,\u201d Farkas explains. \u201c[The scene] was non-existent, and we had no country radio, so it was not on anyone\u2019s radar. We started seeing a shift when we booked a show with Luke Bryan in 2016 and it sold out the Bell Centre in like a day. We were like, \u201cHoly crap, that\u2019s, there\u2019s something going on here with some of this newer country stuff.\u201d<\/p>\n

      \n\tEvenko later rolled the dice with a large-scale festival, combining the rising global appeal of country music with the Quebec and Canadian scene, giving local country musicians a global stage and spotlight that didn\u2019t previously exist in the metropolis.<\/p>\n

      \n\tThis year, Lasso saw a record 30% turnout from outside Quebec, a \u201chuge win,\u201d per Farkas, that has cemented the festival\u2019s nationwide and international reputation.<\/p>\n

        \n\tDrake hints that there could be more expansions coming while thanking Live Nation \u201cfor giving me the continued trust on a journey that I hope is shared with every city and country worldwide\u201d and teases an in-person experience in Ottawa, revealing that he \u201cwill be there to drop off my personal touch to Ottawa soon.\u201d<\/p>\n

        \n\tThe 2,000-person venue will welcome dozens of international artists to the country\u2019s capital, cementing the nation\u2019s capital as a music hub outside of the bigger ones in Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver.\u00a0<\/p>\n
