social media, the world No 1 said: \u201cEven though I have been working hard with my team and my medical staff, we have now had to make the difficult decision that I will not be able to compete at the US Open this year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have been back on court in Monte Carlo over the last couple of days and have realised that I still need more time to recover from my right knee issue.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m obviously very sad and disappointed, as New York has a special place in my heart. I was very much looking forward to coming back and playing in the electric atmosphere in front of the great fans there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sinner\u2019s withdrawal comes just one day after Carlos Alcaraz confirmed he would be making his tennis return at the Grand Slam, so it\u2019s very disappointing for the tennis world.<\/p>\n<p>Alcaraz and Sinner have not played a Grand Slam together since the Australian Open, which saw the Spaniard lift the title and Sinner lose in the semi finals.<\/p>\n<p>As a result of Sinner\u2019s withdrawal from the US Open, he will lose a significant number of ranking points, as he performed well at the Grand Slam last season.<\/p>\n<h2>More Jannik Sinner news<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennis365.com\/tennis-news\/jannik-sinner-tactical-tweak-he-must-make-to-win-the-us-open\">Jannik Sinner warned what he must do at the US Open to aid his knee injury<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennis365.com\/tennis-news\/novak-djokovic-explains-what-jannik-sinner-does-that-really-reminds-him-of-himself\">Novak Djokovic heaps praise on Jannik Sinner as he compares him to himself<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Italian lost in the final of the 2025 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennis365.com\/tag\/us-open\">US Open<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennis365.com\/tag\/carlos-alcaraz\">Alcaraz<\/a>, which means he would have been defending 1300 ranking points at the tournament.<\/p>\n<p>That will come off his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennis365.com\/tag\/ATP-Tour\">ATP Tour<\/a> total, so he will be left on 11,500 ranking points, which still makes him comfortably the world No 1 in the rankings.<\/p>\n<p>However, should <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennis365.com\/tag\/alexander-zverev\">Zverev<\/a> win the US Open this year, where he will be one of the favourites, then he will really start to close the gap on the world No 1.<\/p>\n<p>The German is currently on 7790 ranking points, and he is only defending third round points from last year\u2019s event.
