The Sound<\/strong><\/h1>\n

\n\tCyn grew up in a military family, moving between Tennessee, Georgia, Texas and Hawaii before attending Arizona State University \u2014 and along the way she fell in love with a range of sounds. Christina Aguilera\u2019s Back to Basics<\/em> was her first CD; she stumbled upon OutKast, Erykah Badu and Lauryn Hill; and her father played plenty of Slick Rick at home, all of which inform her unique blend of rap, neo-soul and R&B, and her general refusal to be boxed in creatively.<\/p>\n

\n\tWith a wispy flow and potent storytelling skills honed when she wrote poetry in college, Cyn now boasts a more versatile sonic palette than many of her rage-rap-loving Gen\u00a0Z peers; think Doja Cat if she rapped like Noname. Cyn\u2019s brutal candor \u2014 often juxtaposing brash confidence with nerve-wracking insecurities \u2014 is distinctive, too: On \u201cHigher,\u201d from this May\u2019s Detour<\/em> EP, she raps, \u201cAlways knew a bitch like me was gon\u2019 make it,\u201d but continues, \u201cMade a bag, ran it up, then I lost it on the tour\/ Had me feeling like I should\u2019ve kept that corporate gig at home.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Breakthrough<\/strong><\/h1>\n

\n\tCyn may self-deprecatingly call rapping \u201ca dumbass career choice,\u201d but it certainly hasn\u2019t been for her so far. Following 2024\u2019s The Drive Home<\/em> and 2025\u2019s Backroads<\/em>, she spun the block for a third navigation-themed EP with Detour<\/em> \u2014 and, ironically, it signaled an arrival at her destination. The seven-track set is a petri dish of Cyn\u2019s gifts: dexterous raps, luscious melodies and raw creativity. There was no time to overthink Detour<\/em>, which she completed in a week on a militant schedule: recording all day, with only short breaks to eat and no revising finished ideas. Cyn\u2019s catalog has now earned 50.1\u00a0million official on-demand U.S. streams, according to Luminate.<\/p>\n

The Cosigns<\/strong><\/h1>\n

\n\tShout-outs for Cyn have poured in from stars like SZA, Nas, J.\u00a0Cole, Badu and Doja Cat; Hill brought her out during her own Jazz in the Gardens festival performance last year in Miami. But her most unexpected endorsement came from outside of music: 71-year-old Denzel Washington raves about Cyn at seemingly every chance he gets. \u201cI\u2019m a fan of music. I\u2019m on Samara Cyn right now,\u201d the Academy Award winner said on Good Morning America<\/em>, before listing Cyn\u2019s \u201cBrand New Teeth\u201d collaboration with Smino as one of his favorite current songs.<\/p>\n

The Future Is Bright<\/strong><\/h1>\n

\n\t\u201cIt feels like the underground is kind of bubbling up and a lot of new players are on the field now doing really interesting things. There\u2019s kind of a competitive rap nature coming up a little bit more. It feels like a cool moment to be in and see who actually gets into the next bracket and what that looks like.\u201d<\/p>\n

A Meaningful \u2018Detour\u2019<\/strong><\/h1>\n

\n\t\u201cYou know when you fall in love, but it feels different from all of the other times that you fell in love before? It\u2019s like an \u2018Oh, s\u2013t \u2014 I didn\u2019t realize I was a lying-ass b\u2014h before, this is what it\u2019s supposed to feel like\u2019 type of thing. I was proud of the music before, but I think I mean it this time.\u201d<\/p>\n

Next Up<\/strong><\/h1>\n

\n\t\u201cI\u2019m working on a project. I do feel like something longer-form makes sense. I\u2019m ready to actually take some time and get into a whole concept instead of little tastes of something. I do feel really free after Detour<\/em> to make whatever I want. I have some singing songs, some rapping songs and I think there\u2019s some chiseling away that needs to happen. Sonically, I can go wherever I want, so it\u2019s just a matter of locking in. I have an umbrella I want to fit things underneath.\u201d<\/p>\n
